I want to do something. What can I do?
    - I'm shifting to a plant-based diet
    - I'm reducing and recycling my waste
    - I'm repurposing things and materials I have
    - I don't drive, but I get a ride a couple times per week. Should I stop those too?
    - I buy little clothes and pay attention to the materials and production.
    - I lead scouts patrols and provide them with information and support with sustainable life style choises, climate demonstrations they want to go to, and talking about political topics, among teaching other life skills.
I still feel like I could do more. I'm thinking about an instagram or something where I could influence people. But I'm not sure.
I haven't decided what to major in yet and I'm pretty sure it should be something similar to what I do in the scouts. But there are too many options. I don't know which one is the best.

Get creative and get cooperative. There are more people like you. We are all around the world like a million Davids. By pushing together we might have a chance against Goliat. We have to get together and raise awareness.

Give it up. For every change you make, the rest of the developing world makes 100 changes in the opposite direction - toward greater consumption, and a better standard of living. They want all the things, all the services and all the necessities which you've been privileged to experience. To impede their movement toward similar health and happiness is nothing short of extreme arrogance.

The healthiest choice by far, is to realize that climate is the most chaotic system known to man, that nothing we are seeing or will see, is outside the boundaries of normal 4.5 billion-year-old climate variation, and that we as humans have always had the ability to adapt. Being a realist as opposed to a denier, means that I understand carbon dioxide is rising from dangerously low levels which have come very close to erasing all life on earth, that carbon dioxide has never been the main climate driver even at levels 10 times present, and that the greatest crop yields the planet has ever seen are partially the result and will only continue to break records in coming decades, saving millions from starvation. Multiple peer reviewed studies utilizing AVHRR satellite data now confirm a 15% greening of the planet since 1980, and we rejoice regarding this wonderful development.

Climate change is the intentional use of weather and climate modification, carbon is already being taken out of the atmpshere because it's a resource, and plants need carbon, there is a balance of carbon oxygen which is being disrupted by that very action, and a carbon tax will not change emmissions, bankers and big oil created global warming and climate change. Wake up.
"In searching for a new enemy to unite us, we came up
with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming,
water shortages, famine and the like would fit the bill. All these
dangers are caused by human intervention, and it is only through changed attitudes and behavior that they can be overcome. The real enemy then, is humanity itself."

The one and the only way I can think of to put an end to this insane system of infinite growth on a finite planet would be to make it financially worthwhile for people to start sharing the jobs we do NEED people to do and work LESS.....(it's the only way to get people to willingly work LESS because nobody would be willing to share their job and work any LESS if it meant they lose any money) There would be no such thing as a shortage of jobs if it was made worthwhile to share the work we need to have done.

For that to work, of course, the job as a homemaker would have to be respected and esteemed by both the money earners and the homemakers.

The oil industry have made themselves indispensable.
If you buy synthetic clothing, you are using oil. If you buy cotton clothing, you are still using oil as modern farming methods use chemicals made from oil and gas, plus farm machinery is oil powered. Also, cotton is transported to places to turn it into cloth. Then, the cloth is delivered to garment manufacturers, then moved to retailers. Each move is diesel powered. No matter what you buy, oil is consumed to make it possible.

The reason the Australian response was so early is because we see the results very clearly and already suffer from the affects. We have forest fires that are getting much worse and starting earlier and earlier each year and now there are towns in Australia that have very little water left and will need to bring water in in tankers very soon which means they don't have water to fight fires as well as just needing drinking water for people and stock. We lost 173 lives in a fire not that long ago; whole families burned to death in their own driveways whilst trying to get to their cars to flee. Now, 85% of our land mass is desert, in 10 years that will be 95% desert.

This is on the one hand obvious and on the other hand not a noticeable part of the conversation so far on climate change:
Regardless how large grassroots movements of citizens petitioning lawmakers to enact policies, we are running into one core problem which has been well researched and clear, which is that lawmakers are not and have not been for some time representing the wishes or needs of the broad population, but of wealthy oligarchic elites who support their campaigns and flood them with lobbying graft. We know this in general, but in the case of climate change this puts the wishes of the population at direct odds with the wishes of the elite, who profit by owning energy supplies and distribution, and who profit from the constant exploitation->growth dynamic made possible by fossil fuels.
Until we somehow change the corruption that allows governments to entirely represent the will of the capital-owning class and not at all represent the will of the majority of the population, we cannot address climate change at all. It will be all talk and no action.

Politicians' credibility, already very low, has been very much undermined by the chaos in the UK government and parliament over the Brexit issue - and now along comes another huge issue. Do we really think they can deal with it without some systemic change? Perhaps the public are more ready for that, in this country (the UK), because of what we've seen already. Those politicians who are most adept at sniffing out an advantage (hello Mr Gove) may be best placed to take radical action, once convinced of its necessity.

The earth is currently cooling, just look at the record low temperatures and snow volumes in the Northern Hemisphere this winter. This snow is currently melting in the US, resulting in record flooding with corresponding livestock and grain losses. We should be focusing on how we are going to grow enough food to feed us all in a cooling world, not how we are going to remove vital plant food from the atmosphere! CO2 has a small warming effect but is minuscule compared to the Sun’s influence and other greenhouse gasses.

I think Greta is right about people who are not neurotypical being at the forefront of this movement. They don't care so much about social habit and convention - they just see truth and speak out.
I see society as hugely benefiting from this diversity, especially in times of crisis where group-think had blinded typical people to the vital truth.
Evolution has favoured people like Greta for a reason, and we see it now more than ever.

But Anna sort of missed the point. Sure it is important to be inclusive, but the question, and what Greta alluded to, was handing the podium to neurodiverse people, not merely having them tag along for the ride. I agree about the social habits and conventions, being on the spectrum myself, I'm constantly in disbelief about things that people are either unaware of, simply unwilling to discuss or downright dismissive off. And that's without mentioning how difficult it is to just say what I believe to be true, as it forces others to step outside their illusion and acknowledge what they do not want to acknowledge. Society is difficult to navigate under these conditions.

Some imagine going vegan reduces the amount of oil consumed.
Modern agriculture, growing vegetables, is totally oil dependent.
    1. Farmers use artificial fertilisers and other agricultural chemicals made from oil and gas that enhance vegetable production.
    2. Farm machinery that plant and harvest vegetables are diesel powered.
    3. Transport of vegetables from farm to our local shops is also powered by diesel.
The only vegetables that are not dependent on the use of oil are the ones you grow, using natural fertilisers and hard work.

What does a type 2 diabetic do when looking for vegetarian or vegan food? I need low-carb stuff basically, but every meal can't consist of salad leaves and mycoprotein (I hope). I look at, say, vegeburgers in the shops, and I see that a single patty contains around 21 to 28 g of carbs. A safe limit for me is 12 g, but in practice that is very difficult to achieve all the time and I generally settle for about 20 g per meal. This is obviously easier to achieve with meat or fish as the main (or interesting) component. However, I accept that it would be preferable for several reasons to at least change the emphasis in my diet, and I push it in the veg/veg direction most of the time, in fact, but there don't seem to be many products out there that suit. I don't do much proper cooking, I would add, due to laziness and a considerable lack of time and skill. I grill, bake as is, microwave or heat in a saucepan.

The opposite is true. Plants are much cheaper as food than animal based products. Feeding animals and eating their flesh and secretions is a totally inefficient way to create food...and detrimental for human health.. and the environment. Go vegan! 🌱✌💚

For the first time, I disagree, respectfully, with Greta: about the individual footprint, that is intertwined with what the corporations do in the big systems. That question about who should act is a red herring, a trap to make people choose between the right or the left hand when we need both.
The system which needs to be changed is an intricate network of individual and corporate scale of damaging, i.e, if people don't stop or reduce eating meat, the agribusiness won't bother to educate people to do it because their profit is their only goal, and if people don't understand how they play their role in the ecology system and the environmental crisis, of which the climate is the most menacing right now as scientists point out (there are others going along, like the mass extinction of species threatening crops and public health with pandemics), why bother after all? It's a system crisis, not only climatic or ecological. It's the capitalism and its Extractivism and surplus value machinery taking its toll on the main source of profit, which is the Nature, because the capitalist system has reached its climax. If we lose the opportunity to educate people, and ourselves, as a whole to the way ecology works and how and why we need to change, top (corporations and countries as a macrosystem) to the bottom (we as individuals which are part of that macrosystem and who have big impact when our footprint is combined, after all, we are 7 billion of individuals!, more or less daily. eating, using water and producing waste), the crisis will only be put ahead of us to come back, maybe, stronger and harder to fight.
So, I think, as Einstein said about Science and Religion, it's not a choice of one between the two but the correct and balanced relationship between them. And I think that we can and need to work the two together, at the same time, just because in real life they are not separate. What is happening with this ecological and climate crisis is a lesson Nature is giving us about her system, in which everyone has your part, duty, and rights, and have to do it proportionately. It's a lesson of real democracy and justice. Let's not lose it and fall for that trap because it's only to postpone the problem, which is the way humans deal with their primary source of life and sustaining, Nature. For me, it's not only for my surviving desire if that is achieved with the letting go of the rest. As Greta said, it's a holistic thing also in the sharing of responsibilities, proportionately, of course. And who knows, try to show the proportional impact of everybody, as individuals, countries, social classes, businesses, life-death styles, maybe help people to be more conscious and responsible for their own share and to put pressure on everyone else is screwing things up. That would help too in the scientific dissemination/diffusion about what citizens can and must do in their private houses and at the public ones, such as parliaments.

And last three years we have fire in the woodstove every month of the year, even in July for couple of cold nights. But we still don't call it "climate crisis". they took a previously green space that was lovely to ride the bikes thru and have cut all the trees? why? to build ECO homes.
meanwhile, buildings sit empty for months into years here, decaying because no one lives in them. cares for them. we have plenty of empty housing. what we have are greedy landlords who prefer to not rent, over taking less.

Do you know that trees is the only material that can soak up the killer of people's immune system... 5G radiation! This is the true reason they're cutting down the trees, so as to eventually depopulate Humanity. The city of Sheffield in the UK was doing just this (but gave another excuse as to why, "the leaves clogged up the drains"). But the residents fought back and it was stopped, but only after they had felled many trees on a residential street.
What we see in films are signs of what is to come. In the first Lord of The Rings trilogy, the trees were torn down to produce evil, that went forth to depopulate those that stood in the way of the 'All Seeing Eye' 👁️ And the all seeing eye of today is the ever increasing Smart spy network which 5G will deliver.... deliver, unless we do stand up for our freedom and our children's freedom (which is not about how fast we can download the Internet),

@@lewisbensted7161 Why? Higher Co2 levels means greater plant growth and thus oxygen processing.
Ocean acidification? Most sea life evolved with 5 times or more higher carbon levels than currently exist they are genetically equipped to handle it.
Sea level rise? A hotter world means more rain to refill the massive land aquifers we have currently drained around the world sequestering the water without human intervention.
Should we change how we package products and what those are made of? Absolutely.
Should we change how we handle city sewer systems and waste water treatment? Without a doubt we are throwing away valuable resources in away that hurts us more than the loss of them. They can be used to grow algae to supply many needs food fuel water cleaning and be a carbon break on the environment if needed.

Dinosaurs lived 66- 240, million years ago. Back then the climate and conditions were very different to now, which is why the wildlife back then was so different to now. They were adapted to their conditions. At the current point in time, the wildlife and ecosystems on this planet have changed to adapt to the current climate. Changing climate is normal, when this is natural, it happens incredibly slowly to allow to earth's creatures to adapt. At the current rate, it is happening way way too quickly for our eco systems to survive. We as humans cannot survive without the earths ecosystems etc.

There are different ways to lower our carbon footprint. We can take public transport, recycle, etc. but we can massively decide to go vegan. That single decision can make a huge difference.

    • @MICKEYISLOWD

I tried vegan and I became deficient. Then I found out most vegans are deficient. Then I found out humans are only here because we learned how to cook meat and ate the saturated fats. Sugar is the killer not the saturated fats. Red meat is full of essential nutrition especially liver. I eat meat three times per week sometimes twice but I eat liver on most occasions. Its impossible for everybody to have this diet but the problem is far too many people not what we eat. I have spent 18 months now reading scientific data on climate change and now I know just how serious this problem is. We cannot transition to renewable energy because we cannot store the energy. Its an impossible situation that can't be solved. Either way whatever we do billions of people are going to suffer and die. I live in a wealthy country and have savings and own my own home but when the food becomes unavailable because the Wheat, Corn and Rice crops have lost 60% reduction within the next ten yrs then I will starve also. For now I will do my best but the tsunami hasn't hit us yet and the worst aspect of this is when we get the first Ice free Arctic seas. Then the temps will rocket upwards within a yr and we are doomed.

    • @Acemeistre
      @Acemeistre Před 3 lety

      probably none.
so ok, why didn't they ride their bikes there? - because cars are more convenient and have much further range in a much shorter amount of time.
so they shouldn't use a car then? ideally no, but as stated those are the quickest and most convenient way, so what we need to do is change the way the car works.
Ah yes an electric vehicle, but I can't afford an electric vehicle.
yes, so what can we do in the mean time?
well you pressurize the government into putting in pledges and policies that will invest in things like greener transportation, that will further develop/innovate the electric car and produce more of it. The more this produces, the cheaper things will become.
So how do I help do this? Vote - vote for politicians and leaders who will prioritize these policies and thus you won't have to ask the question 'how many at this meeting rode their bikes there?
YW Elizabeth Blane, thank you for pointing this out and caring about our planet. Have a nice day.

Make history, Block Blue Ocean Event, we make ice layers and freeze sea water lole salt from the sea. We need Jackets! We need numbers...in and out of circle.....make ice cheaply in air temperature this year!
