      You (and Vlad) miss the point. You are implying that environmentalists are asking people in poverty to stay in poverty in order to protect the environment. This is simply not true. Yes, the highly industrialized nations are far more responsible for climate change, and having more industrialized nations accelerates the process, *if proper measures aren't taken*. There are measures that can be taken. People are so stubborn and selfish you make a statement like that as an excuse to live your life "normally" and not make any changes. So you can feel guilt free... like somehow YOUR the hero for not asking Africans to stay poor, when that has nothing to do with it. I hope you see the light some day and help in the fight to save the world. Or at least help some Africans, if reducing your meat consumption or other small "sacrifices" are so unbearable.

      Studies show that women in general get that kind of treatment in media more often than men. Men get to talk about actual issues, and therefore appears to be smarter. Women get asked more about emotions, family, or other ”softer issues”. This affects both womens’ and mens’ views of womens’ capacity in general. One of many, many phenomenon that adds to the gender inequality we still have.
      Greta has been studying the climate issue for 7-8 years now, with an intensity of an Asperger’s... She’s as close to an expert as anyone can come, without being a scientist!

    • @Bitfire31337
      @Bitfire31337 Před 3 lety +3

      @@fenrisulven5324 Ah, here we go again. That's what Greta meant when she said some people in the US (also in other places, but much less so) mistake the climate change for something you can decide to believe in or not. It's not a religion, bro. It's predictions based on observations and measurements of the real world in the past and current, extrapolated with proven climatic models into the future. All those tell us, within a high degree of certainty, how the climate is going to evolve and what influence that will have on our life, if we keep on doing as we are. That's called "science" and there is consensus about this topic among climate scientists.
      And no - climate scientists, communicators or even activists (who generally tend to overdramatise to get their points heard) are not saying that the world is goind to end in 10 or 20 years. Everyone knows and says that things will progressively get worse and it's already started. The problem is, that climate as well as large changes in society and industry are very long winded processes, which means we have to act as early as possible - ideally decades ago. Also there are certain points in warming the earth, where a snowball-effect can be triggered, like thawing permafrost-soil which releases large amounts of methane, speeding up warming and triggering more such effects and so on.
      Imagine it as a steadily growing heap of lightly toxic trash and you are the only one who is there to remove it. In the beginning, it's just a little and not very dangerous, but if you don't start removing it early and let it accumulate over the decades, you will have a toxic mountain before you, that you can't remove without being killed by it's toxic gasses anymore.
      I don't like to be the bearer of bad news, but sadly you are the one that has been fooled. I don't know you and your life circumstances and therefore don't know how that attitude developed and will certainly not be able to convince you otherwise, so I won't argue with you. I just didn't want to let your misleading statements unanswered, though you might yourself not know that you are uttering bullcrap.
      On the other hand, if you are really just a troll, shame on you!

      New Yorkers have a dark sense of humor. They don't think that pollution is non-serious, they just laugh kind of darkly when people call them out on their pollution problem, as if to say "Yeah, we know, you caught us... it's embarrassing." They're laughing that she's being very frank and doesn't mind pointing out something in an "undiplomatic" way, which generally New Yorkers enjoy, even at their own expense. Most of this audience is very much in favor of seeing climate change as a fact and doing better for the environment. But the very corrupt power structure that keeps things the way things are has left many New Yorkers disenchanted, and so we/they (and Americans in general), tend to laugh at our problems. Like state-wide radio hosts or the like. They're local actors and singers in a small country that actually taxes the wealthy, not some sort of cabal of backroom multinational CEOs.
      And it's a false dichotomy to say individual action and holding the wealthy and the rest of us responsible are somehow mutually exclusive, or that one is important but the other one isn't (even though she absolutely has been calling out businesses and governments as well). Small decisions like an individual's carbon footprint does matter a lot when that behavior is repeated several hundred million times over a population. And ultimately corporations get away with most of their bullshit simply due to the apathy of the general population.

      That's because they were all softball questions. Trevor didn't ask about the plane flights her boat's crew will take for the return trip. He also didn't touch on the fact that her boat is made of plastic and carbon fiber, and therefore actually has a huge carbon footprint. He also didn't wonder aloud why she couldn't just use the internet and video-conference to address a summit on another continent, the way tons of people do every day. That boat trip was a publicity stunt for fact-free people to tweet about. Have you seen her boat ? Where do you think they shat ? That thing doesn't have a toilet. Ask anyone who's sailed that kind of boat where your piss and shit go. And this was a 15-day trip. Compare that to an 8-hour flight where your waste gets disposed of and recycled when you land, not in the middle of the ocean.
