  • A growing number of black vultures circling a Staten Island neighborhood have residents concerned. They tell CBS2's Astrid Martinez the aggressive birds are more than just a nuisance.

    I started seeing vultures on Staten Island almost 2 years ago. They gather on chimneys to stay warm in the winter. Last winter there were a lot more, like 3 to 4 times more than the previous year. I'm way more scared of the turkeys attacking me than the vultures. The vultures eat roadkill.

    I deal with bald eagles and hawks in my backyard in WI. Vultures kill nothing. These people are overreacting, I don’t even believe the eye witness about seeing them tearing off roof tiles. So sad when people act like they are some big problem when they just don’t like them.

    I helped a friend dispatch a whole bunch of them at his farm, after he obtained a permit from his state wildlife. They were killing his livestock by pecking them to death in a very gruesome way. Black vultures are scavengers, but they will also killl to eat, unlike the turkey vultures who are strictly scavengers.

    Just yesterday I saw a mated pair while visiting a local tea shop. I thought they were beautiful. Also saw them get cuddly. Apparently they are nesting on a local businesses roof and the shop owners see them all the time.

    Down here along the southern border when we see vulture’s circling we call 911 because we know another illegal didn’t make it across the desert. It’s about 2000 in this sector so far this year. This craziness needs to be stopped.

    I have seen these birds share a meal with cats… For years in no way would they ever… I mean I’m surprised you didn’t emphasize that it’s ridiculous to think they would go after live pray they’re very cool birds except they shit all over everything and it’s heartbreaking to think they’re so hungry they’re eating roof tiles…. It’s almost as if we’ve killed off so much of the wildlife there’s that much less roadkill… But vultures play a very important role in the cycle of life…

    They'll be everywhere soon. Alot of livestock and just animals in general are dying at a mass scale so these guys will do the job

    The vultures were here before the human vultures. Why are you worried? Without your GPS and waze you can't go anywhere, but the geese come back to their birth place every year after finishing their migration. You own the land that belongs to them.       I don’t know about roof tiles, but the black vultures that gather around the parking lot at the Anhinga Trail/Gumbo Limbo Trail in Everglades National Park in Florida are famous for tearing the rubber parts of windshield wipers and roofs of cars. The rangers even provide tarps to put over your car now.
