- Introducing my Formula 1 pylon racing aircraft design - Impulse.
This aircraft is intended to compete in closed course pylon races in Reno, Nevada. It will be powered by a Lycoming O-200 4 cylinder engine, has 66 sq. ft. of wing area, weighs about 500 lbs., and will go 200+ miles an hour. Construction is hollow molded vacuum infused carbon composite. Follow along as I chase my dream of racing in the F-1 class with an airplane I designed and building myself.
Saw your project at Reno finals 2023. Just getting started with your build.
Looking forward to follow your progress.
Gorgeous fuselage
Hi Red, just subscribed. Formula 1 is my favorite Reno class. Looking forward to the rest of the Impulse series.
Thank you, I appreciate it.
Pretty cool Red!
Let's get with it! 😉
I am in good luck team Red
Nice Hobie Hawk 😍
YES!!! Awesome!! Looks GREAT to me! - I can't see anything I would change. Interesting spinner/cowl intersection! I don't think I've seen one like that before. I'm up to my elbows making my next video on Inverse Pressure Gradient Matching from the May 1997 Sport Aviation article that Mike wrote - I hope to be done in a few days or a week. Could I use a still photo from this video? Some parts of your plug look familiar in an awesome way. I'd love to talk to you about it. Again, great work and keep it up!
Sure, feel free.
Awesome! I like the way you are leveraging this for your own accountability and bringing us along for the journey!
Beautiful work
This is awesome 👍
Very cool
Looks great Red. Thank you for the shout out on the TC-1611 Epoxy Surface Coat (aka gel coat). You'll get some great looking parts out of those molds and your approach to mold making is perfect for the application. It's exciting to watch this project and wish you all the success! Can't wait for the next installments of mold and part fabrication.... :)
Very exciting, Red! Fly Low, Fly Fast, Turn Left will be a reality!
I'm in, watching and learning, absolutely love the colour scheme render too,
This looks like an awesome project!
Given your background, this is right up your alley. I look forward to following the build. Good luck!
Awesome Red! The cat is out of the bag now!!
Enjoy watching ! Look forward to seeing your progress . Keep up the good work Red !
Thank you, I appreciate it.
Can’t wait to watch your progression! Just listened to you on the AMA podcast.
this is an ambitious project Red. We're all here to back you on it for sure. Keep going!
Wow this is so awesome Red. If anyone can do it you can!!
Great to see you are "out of the closet" with your Impulse. You have a place to stay here in Carson City if you want when you come to race week. Very exciting!
Thanks Dave!
Crazy = good 👍😎 Love it , looking forward to the journey thanks for sharing.
Following closely !!! Awesome work !!
This is just awesome, Red!
I see Mike Arnold legacy influence here 🙂
Very much 👍🏻
This looks like the Nemesis
Red, that is looking Sleek (always has). This is very close to becoming Plane! (or at lease looking like one you can sit in.) I really appreciate you describing the molding process. Can you link to the website where you have been documenting the process. I was going to make a 1/4 to 1/6 scale Quickie / Q200 / dragonfly using the standard plug mold process for experience. This plane look quite sleek.
Super impressed Red!
Would you mind sharing a little about the process of CNCing the plug sections? How many pieces was the fuse done in for example, and how big the CNC was?
Hi Ward, thank you for the compliment. The fuselage was done by a good friend of mine named Erich at Chase Boats. He has a very large CNC router (10hp 12' x 6' x 5'). It was done in left and right halves only. Since the plug was longer than the X travel, he machined a part of it, moved it, re-indexed it and cut again. There is a channel cut down the center for a steel pipe to help with sagging. So far so good! I think I have some pics of the process. If you join the FB group I'll post them there.
Very well done Red, I always wondered why Mr. Mike Arnold didn't keep his molds for the AR6 Racer
Thank you, I appreciate it. The AR6 was a commissioned design. He built the plug and the owner David Hoover had the molds made and built the plane.
Looks great Red. Can you elaborate on the aluminum splitter plate?
Hi Mo. The splitters are made from Masonite or Melamine. No aluminum.
@@RedJensen I should have elaborated a little more. The elevator hinge line splitter. Why not a smooth top and bottom mold, why the break at the hinge line? Will the skins for the stab and elevators be laid up separately, not one pice, then cut apart like on most of our sailplanes? Pocket hinge?
Once I asked a friend “why am I doing this?” and he said “why do anything?” Because you want to.
I see a low spot on the lt lower cowl
What kind of resin are you using?
MGS for the parts, or I may stick with the BJB.
Do I get name creds??
Yep! I’ll do an episode about that 👍🏻
