One year ago at the same arena against the same Philadelphia 76ers team, Allen Iverson had embarrassed Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers dropping 41 points while leading his team to a 105-90 victory. Kobe tried to make sure it would not happen again. However, Bryant picked up 2 early fouls in the 1st quarter guarding the speedy Allen Iverson. With Kobe in foul trouble in the 1st quarter, Iverson went 4-7 with Derek Fisher guarding him. Even though Bryant came back in the 2nd quarter, he did not guard Iverson the remaining of the half in order to not pick the 3rd foul. Iverson took advantage and scored 16 first half points on 7-14 shooting. Kobe Bryant made sure he would never score again in the 2nd half.
Tightening up the screws, Bryant chased AI everywhere on the court denying him the ball at every possible chance and forcing him to pass the ball when he did get it. Bryant played remarkable defense in the 2nd half on the superstar putting up 4 blocks (5 total, 4 which were on Iverson) and frustrating him into 0-11 shooting. His defense held Iverson completely scoreless in the 2nd half. When he wasn't playing defense, he was making clutch baskets down the stretch including a game tying assist to Shaquille O'neal to tie the game at 81, a clutch fadeaway over Ratliff, and a go ahead runner to put LA up 85-81. It was back to defense afterwards. After Eric Snow hit a three to close the gap to 1 and the Lakers came up dry on the next possession, it set the stage for the biggest play of the game.
Allen Iverson, known for his 4th quarter play, had the ball on the very final possession with 11 seconds remaining in the game. Driving in the lane he went up only to have his shot spiked away by none other than Mr. Bryant who just had his 5th rejection of the game. Frustrated, Bryant was pushed out of bounds by Iverson and extended the lead to 3 (87-84) with 2 free throws. Attempting to bring the game to OT, Iverson had his final attempt blocked by Shaquille O'neal ending one of his wosre games of the season. Iverson, who shot 7-14 in the 1st half, finished 7-25 from the field overall thanks to the sticky defense of Kobe Bryant. This season was arguably Kobe Bryant's best defensive season overall. Although Bryant didn't have eye popping stats in the game, his defense in the 2nd half was the difference maker in the game.

This is why I would never draft a 6 foot player. You see A.I. getting locked up? The same thing happened in the '98 ECF when Scottie Pippen locked up Mark Jackson or in the Denver/NO series when Dahntay Jones locked up CP3. He averaged 16.6,4.4,10.4, 4.8TO and shot 41%. During the season he averaged 22.8,5.5,11.0, 2.9 TO and shot 50%!!!
What I mean is that in this video you can clearly see Shaq WAITING in the paint for AI which makes defense by Kobe 90 times easier because of this safety anchor. AI can't get to the rim really on the iso plays because of this (no defensive 3 seconds at this stage).
AI gave Jordan and Pippen fits when they matched up against him, but Kobe could guard Iverson, this is why I tell people that Kobe was a better defender than Mike and Scottie.

Bottom line is if it was just one one one,no Shaq and no double's/triple's, AI would have scored on most of his possessions. Plus this was just a regular season game. That's why in game 1 of finals kobe phil jackson had to put tyron lue on AI because AI was lighting up Kobe

Kobe played some good d, but it's much easier to play perimeter d when you have Shaq looming around on the basket waiting for every drive. AI has torched Kobe and Lakers regularly since Shaq left (def don't see Kobe shutting him down lke this since Shaq left).

ok big deal. Kobe shoots 45% for his career and Iverson is at 43%. To be 6'0" and some may say he shorter than that and dominate the game like he does, you have to give him a node over Kobe. Can you honestly say that pound for pound there's a player in NBA history that has dominated the league like him especially during his prime years in Philly when HE LED the sixers to one of best in the east. Kobe has pretty good defense, but let's be honest here. During this threepeat Lakers overall defense was amazing. It wasn't really just Kobe locking Iverson as much as it was the fact that Kobe could play D close and not have to worry about getting beat because one of the most dominant centers ever to play the game was protecting the paint.
Coincidentally, this is the game where Iverson breaks Kobes ankle and makes him slip and fall.

If you watch it again, alot of the plays whenever AI tried to drive he easily drove past Kobe. Whenever he passed out from a drive it was because at least 1 other guy was coming at him. The times when AI pulled up after driving was because Shaq was right there underneathe the basket, which made it look like kobe played good d. AI was already in front of kobe that 1 block, he just blocked it from pure height and length. The second to last play AI had to rush it and it was easy for kobe to predict

I'm supposing that you figure that you judge a guard on their defensive skills by how many steals they average right? well kobe in his career averages 1.5 steals a game. Iverson the one you said doesn't play defense averages 2.3 steals a game for his career. Kobe's career high in a season in steals was 2.2 while iverson's was 2.8. In every category iverson has kobe beat. Career ppg kobe is at 25 and A.I. is at 27.7 learn facts before tlkin shit.
