    Good review. My father in law actually just took delivery one one of these on Saturday so I have some seat time on it now. I can agree with most of what you said here EXCEPT the bit about it being an acceptable beginners bike. There is no way I would recommend this bike to a beginner. Even with all the nannies that it offers the bike has enough power to get you into trouble, and let’s be honest, it’s just too tempting to turn the aids off and rip around. Someone who’s never owned a bike would certainly get them self hurt on this machine. If a completely new rider wanted something in this style/ride position, I’d be pushing them toward a CB300 or SV650 instead of this. Those options offer similar experience (especially the SV which is a vtwin) with much more approachable power than the FTR1200.
    Now that said if someone with a season or two under their belt asked me if they should look at this bike I’d say sure. It’s a great bike and like you said, has a lot of room to “grow into” for there “novice but not new” rider.

    I'm debating on getting out of Road Racing and just doing trackdays. This bike makes me think really hard about throwing a set of Pirelli Diablo SC3 tires on it and have a nice daily rider and a formidable track bike. Put a higher set of rear sets on it to get more than 43° lean angle. The fact that the front and rear suspension in fully adjustable makes this bikes potential on the track alot better than most trackday riders. Then to have Brembo brakes lever to rotor is awesome as well. It will take a while to get used to the Pro Taper bars, but those could also be replaced with some aftermarket clip-ons for the track. Great review.

    • @arhale09
      @arhale09 Před 5 lety +1

      Former trackday rider and current FTR owner here, I wouldn't recommend this as a track bike. It's got INCREDIBLE torque and it's "grin factor" is off the chart, but it's not meant for the track. With a substantially longer wheelbase than a sportbike, hustling it through chicanes (think Barber after the museum turn or the mini corkscrew at VIR) would really be a chore, and putting clip-ons on it would really stretch it out to maybe uncomfortable levels. Add to that no front fairing and the windblast above 100 mph gets pretty noticeable. If you have the coin, the Ducati Panigale 959 is an almost perfect track weapon. I know you didn't ask my opinion, but I thought I'd chime in. I HIGHLY recommend the FTR, but not on the track

  • @triumphrider2002
    @triumphrider2002 Před 4 lety +2

    It seems to be a great bike and I know Indian was going for the dirt tracker crowd but in my opinion which isn't worth much ,I think 17 inch wheels would be great. You would have a bigger selection of tire choices. You could really dial the bike in for mountain roads. A 190 tire on the back and a 120 on the front would be a great improvement. You still would not have the power the Ducati 1200 Monster has but it would make things interesting.

    I test rode one last week and for 12k before TTL, it ain't worth it IMO, the bike was specifically designed for flat track racing almost like dirt racing just a bit toned down. Your much better off getting an MT10. In addition to that the seat I was riding on vibrated so much, granted a had the lower tier one, not the S. All in all if it was around 9k to 10k I would be more inclined to buy it, but the S model is $15,499 BEFORE TTL. I don't think the hype was worth it considering what you get.

    This isn't a half-assed effort by Indian. The market is changing, the time has come for American manufacturers to break out of the cruiser rut. My thought is that the Indian might be just a little overpriced, but that's in comparison to its peers, and not a criticism of what someone actually gets for their money--it's worth it, but others can offer the same for slightly less. But it's definitely not a cheap or hobbled together effort--Indian clearly wanted to establish a baseline for more bikes in the same vein.

      Not everyone wants a hypernaked. This bike is a fun bike and I'm sure the motor will last alot longer. After riding one my only complaint was it could b a bit lighter but otherwise I loved it. The Indian does alot of things really well and looks awesome. Wheelies easily. Can ride for hours. And that coming from someone with an EBR1190sx with Adam's exhaust/ecm putting down 170rwhp. turbo vrod, xb12s and 88 inch sportster. I liked the indian for what they wer going for they did a great job. All the Japanese bikes are nice but the tend look n feel cheap plastic everywhere wires all over and not everyone wants a bike that u see at every gas station. Not everyone wants a full blown superbike for commuting. And some people just want something unique. And there really isnt many bikes out there like the indian. What it lacks in top HP it makes up in a very broad torque band. Where u actually ride these bikes. Take one for a spin and I'm sure you'll find you like it if u like a bike that handles, comfortable and has good power.

    For the money, it's hard to find a more detailed and exotic custom looking motorcycle. Go price Roland Sands, or ARCH. This bike is a steal compared to the competition.
