- One correction is that my inseam is 32 inches vs. the 33.1 inch seat height. I removed the inch on accident due to that difference.
Now through the end of October 2019 we have launched a TeeSpring campaign to raise funds for equipment for the channel, but to also give back to the community. Our goal is $6,000.00 with $3,000.00 being split between two animal rescues here in OKC. Rabbit Rescue OKC and All Paws Rescue. Help out so that we can provide them with the donations to aid their needs for food, toys, bedding, and all other needs for the foster animals while they look for a home. Visit the TeeSpring store:
teespring.com/...
and if you need gear anything bought from American Legend Rider through my link will also be added to the total and can be found here:
americanlegend...
Also for each $500.00 we go over you win as well. We will be giving away a new GoPro Black edition of whatever the top tier is at the end of the campaign, so 7 or 8. And more than one can win. If you purchase from any of the channels above please keep the receipt because we will ask for proof, go like our Facebook page, and comment "I'm In," and we will select a random winner. Must be a US resident.

You are at least the second reviewer to compare the FTR1200 to a Ducati Monster. That is a great compliment for a bike made by a company with no street sport bike tradition.
Everyone compares it to the Monster. It was nicknamed the "American Ducati" long before it's release to the public.
servicarrider, thanks for the information. I did not know that.
Sweet bike isn't it. Polaris also wholly owns the engineering firm Swissauto Powersports. Google them for insight on racing heritage and powerplants coming your way for Indian. Remember, all of Victory engineering is still employed by Indian and there has never been a more bullet proof motor than the Vic Freedom 106. As a matter of fact, Vic built a prototype back in the 90's that is pretty much todays Indian Chief platform, fairing and all. Pics on the web. Indian talent / resources are wide and deep.
servicarrider, most important is the willingness to use these resources instead cranking out the same old stuff like the other American company.
Yup. That other company doesn't manufacture much of anything beyond tins and frames. They assemble Chinese and other Asian parts.
Man, your enthusiasm is contagious! Subscribed!
Thanks for the support!
Hedgehog: it's so tall, you get a commanding view, the suspension soaks up the bumps, I can stand up easily, it's so flickable.
Me and all enduro riders : welcome to my world.
Finally a great review of the FTR 👍👍
Thank you!
Mankind redefined. By a lovely machine.
Love when machines can do that.
Chieftain dark horse may be the most beautiful bike ever made. I’m excited to give this one a try
Go for it!
Great review!
So my father in law just took delivery of one of these in the race replica trim this weekend. I have to agree with the overriding theme of your review which is the constant giggling when you twist the wrist. This bike is just “fun”.
I think it’s funny to hear reviewers with a lot of cruiser experience refer to the bike as “refined”. IMO it has the suspension refinement that any upright streetbike has but paired with the character of the scout engine. It rumbles a little bit under your seat (not talking HD rumble here) and you can really hear the engine mechanicals when you ride along. It’s not like your average inline 4 where the engine just hums along with a pack of angry bees in the exhaust. The FTR rumbles and barks like a vtwin should, which gives the bike this interesting blend of refined and still raw at the same time.
Was this the one that was picked up at Indian OKC? You are right it is refined like my CB1100 with the suspension and such. Wish mine had the inverted fork like the CB1100RS to match the suspension of this machine.
Well damn you. you've made me want one with your enthusiasm. Thanks a lot dangit lol
Sorry not sorry.
@@RabidHedgehog Think they'd take a 32 year old goldwing I call 'Ol Tetanus as a straight up trade??
I havent seen these up close but I kind of prefer the base model
I like them both side by side.
I tend to agree, who needs the extras with a higher price tag!!! Not liking the intense engine heat on your leg !!! All it needs is a wind screen from Memphis Shades company ! 😎
@@donaldsoncole3095 I would like the switchable abs option on the non-S models. I guess you could wire a switch into the relay but otherwise Indian is forcing riders to go for the sport spec if they want to do any dirt riding.
@@khakimzhanmiras - Cheaper bikes are available to tear up in the dirt ! This model is pricey and I would hate to see you flying over the handlebars! Go KTM and be safe ! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
@@donaldsoncole3095 probably not going to be flat tracking the thing but I mean the wheel size and moderate suspension travel do suggest that it can go down gravel or dirt roads where ABS could be downright hazardous.
You know its something special when it makes you sound like a kid lol.
:)
Excellent review of the FTR. You can definitely hear it in your voice that the bike is a blast to ride. I sat on one at myrtle beach bike week and was a little intimidated by the height. The only bike I’ve ever ridden is my bobber so I wasn’t willing to take the FTR out for a demo. I just might have to get over it and do it.
It is a bit on the tall side but such a balanced machine that it helps.
It is not that tall compared to adventure bikes like a Honda Africa Twin or a Triumph Tiger. From what I hear about the FTR 1200’s ability on dirt, I consider it an adventure bike too.
Below Average Joe that’s true but for me, only riding a scout bobber it was a bit intimidating. The bobber the only bike I’ve ridden.
32' for the passenger seat is hardly considered tall, haha
Nice bike great review thank you😎🇦🇺👍
I love that bike and would have one in a heartbeat! Great review, great channel, All the best from the UK!
Thank you! All the best from Guthrie Oklahoma!
So you liked it?😆 nice review, yeah, so many bikes so little time, hats off to Indian.
So, I am torn between this FTR1200 and the Moto Guzzi V85? They both have 19" front wheels, cruise control, TFT display, twin motors and more travel than majority of bikes. I like in the state of Washington and the roads are not like SoCal and I will probably do fire roads as well. The V85 does offer very nice pinions..thanks for your comment.
After riding both this is does make it a bit more tough. I would say longer range rides the V85TT wins all day everyday as it is more comfortable and sits just perfectly. Does it have the power, no, does it have the cool factor, not as much as the FTR, but it has more equipment at less than the FTR1200 Base with the Adventure pack, and that little 853CC engine is just so darn fun and it gives the V85 a top end of 120MPH, more than enough to get in trouble with any local authority. Bang for the buck its the Goose all day long.
I rode the 1200S and I thought it was OK, but I won't be buying one. I thought the heat coming off the engine was too much. It had pretty decent power, but I think you can buy other bikes for less or about the same money that will outperform this one. I did like that it had cruise control and the rider position was comfortable. I also like the standard speedometer over the TFT screen, but I like the color of the S model better. To me it was a naked bike, not a cruiser. I would like to see you set the camera up so we can get an idea how you look while riding so we can see how crunched up or relaxed you are.
Craig Smith The heat is pretty extreme I agree but is lessened greatly by deleting the cat. I also agree other bikes make more power and are way lighter. Overall though I love mine and the fit and finish is excellent.
@@darrengriffith9680 I am glad you like your bike. I still like the look of this bike, but doubt I will ever own one. At least if we were ever to ride together we won't be on the same bike. LOL Enjoy my friend.
Kind of sounds like you liked it. I rode one of these at Sturgis Indian this last Saturday. I took it up Boulder Canyon between Sturgis and Deadwood. I was really impressed with the power and handling. A real hooligan. It's a little tall for me, but I could manage just fine. As soon as I got back to the dealer I jumped on the Scout 1200 and rode the exact same route so I could compare. Put this engine in something like the Scout and you'd have a power cruiser extraordinaire... For taller guys/gals this FTR is the cat's ass, though.
Indeed it is and I see that engine getting the Scout trimmings for cruiser duty in short order. I don't see Polaris sitting still on being able to make this update like Harley likes to do with the aging 30 year old Sporty that's barely had changes but rubber mounting and fuel injection since the 1986 introduction.
Two standard motorcycle reviews back to back. Maybe the motorcycle companies are figuring out that standards are not obsolete.
Maybe so!
Do just to validate, I can’t be the only person aggravated as shit that this bike has a cable clutch. I rode 3 1200 S’ today back to back and that was my only sticking point on the entire bike.
It is still very light and responsive, and technically you can even adjust it to be quicker.
I wonder if this rides like my Street Rod...
viva la Guzzi
If they bring the Griso back yes!
why don’t these bikes come with heated grips standard?😂 correct me if I’m wrong but there’s a dedicated heated grips fuse on them but not even a dealership option?
Probably for later accessories so it doesn't have to be manufactured later. My CB1100EX was the same way. Even had a light for grips.
Needs a wind screen, Memphis Shades company will make one ! I keep hearing about engine heat on your leg , not liking that ! I would not need the upgraded model. To bad that all the dealerships for Indian are far away , I live in Rising Sun , Maryland!!!
The bikes are pretty simple machines and easily repaired if it is required. They have long legs before maintenance cycles too, like every 10K miles. So it would not be too bad unless something major happens, then I understand.
Yeah, its jus like yer old XT 250.
holy shit.
Did I just watch the Jokers Origin story? Lol jk. Loved the video!
Thanks!
220 hp. WHAT
120. Sounded weird
220 Horsepower!! I don't think so lol wish it was, I defo buy one !!
That's a run on sentence as I was speaking without commas. Same horsepower as the Night Rod too 120 hp
@@RabidHedgehog Nice review as you mention same HP as the night Rod and the comparison with both the Rod (sadly discontinued) and Ducati Diavel are quite relevant, same kind of fun point and squirt riding to. The only downside for me is the seat height at 33 inch is to high so not practical for a short arse rider like me lol , my V Rod seat height is only 26 inch. I,ve also read comments on the price being quite high as Indians go??
Not really the as it starts at 13499.00 for this model but can climb near 17K for the Race Replica S model since it has more goodies and the retuned ECU. Also the Scout Icon does tip the scale higher than the FTR1200 base as it is 14299.00
@@RabidHedgehog I,am in the UK so prices are proberbley higher here as there's less of a Market.
Indian prices go up quite rapidly from the base model , the scout can almost double with a full extras pack !! Can't really criticize Indian as Harley have been doing it for years.
Great that Indian have built a real riders bike, looks very similar to a ducati but that's not a bad thing..
No it is not. It reminded me of a Monster very much so. Also not a bad thing.
Why are the streets so empty?
Saturday! Our city is fairly empty on the weekends during spring/summer.
NOT .... 220 hp...!!!
It was me not putting a comma in my own speech. It has the same horsepower as the nightrod too 120
120BHP not 220. Just say’n.
I said 120 but the audio had a strange artifact in it that caused it to sound like 220.
Hahaha...👍
Dude get off the left lane it's not for cruising
Does the base model have a fuel gage ? Thanks
It actually does not it is only a fuel light.
You seem to be of the misbelief that this is somehow a derivation of the Scout. It is not.
It is not a misbelief. The racer is called the Indian Scout FTR750 in the AMAs the new bike is a concept and derivative of that bike and platform and the engine is also a derivative of the Scout engine therefore this is indeed a Scout somewhere down the line.
Oh, I get it now. Somewhere down the line you and I are the derivative of a chimp. Is that what you are saying? Boy are you stretching. Still wrong but none the less the 750 and AMA rules has nothing to do with the 1200. Apples and oranges...that's why the 750 sells for $50,000.00. More closely related to project 156. The power plant is a complete different motor derivative only in that it is also made of metal.
Still shares common parts with the Scout engine, yes it is like 20% but it is still derivative even if it is a so called stretch. You also have to remember even the concept was called the Scout FTR1200 Factory Custom. So yeah... It's in that family.
220 bhp!!
I spoke without a comma so it was too going into 120 but it does depending on your sound setup sound like 220, mine it still sounded like 120 until I heard it on my phone
@@RabidHedgehog I was only joking, RH. Haha!
I wish it was 220 though... lol
Lay off the happy pills dude! ;)
More like happy fumes... Wait that's not that much better.... Um um…. Happy throttle! Maybe...
It sounds to me, based on your review, that an American company has finally created a viable streetable sport bike. EBR might be the only argument against that but since Buell can't get his finances working for him and Indian isn't going anywhere, I'd say Indian wins.
Freespiritphil let’s see how it sells
@@johnpotter4210 True, however, given the amount of advertising and overall anticipation by the public for this bike, I'm sure it's going to sell just fine. That's one thing Buell never had going for him, the complete support of his parent company (HD), whereas Polaris is all in on Indian.
That and tbh the buell bikes were kinda ugly. This bike scares me cause of its price. The S version is like $16,999
@@johnpotter4210 Yes, but it's still cheaper than HD's closest competitor in the FXDR.
This variant started out at $13,499 and that's not a bad thing. Also like Freespiritphil stated it is less than the FXDR Harley which in theory is about the closest thing that Harley has. Plus on this variant you get ABS and Cruise control as well and the S is 15,499 having the touch screen, the enhanced suspension, the tilt sensitive abs and wheelie mitigation and traction control with the Bluetooth connection as well as cruise and such all for way way less than the FXDR or any comparable Harley. So it's a pretty decent deal with the equipment it has.
how would you compare it to the fat bob 114 as far as response and agility?
The Fat Bob 114 has a 165lb disadvantage so even though the FTR has the displacement and torque disadvantage it will flat foot out run the Bob and out turn it as well. 32 degree lean angles vs 43 on the FTR as well.
220 hp LOL
I say 120 actually.
@@RabidHedgehog yes!
I like this one's speedo, but hate the all black BS. Wonder how much to get some colorful inserts for the tank? Probably too tall for me anyway, but I'm a fan of standards and twins, so this fits the bill, but I would have gladly given up a few ponies for the maintenance free belt. I get the kids will pay up for specmanship, but I'm clumsy and lazy and would rather not have to mess with it. I'd pay more for simple and reliable.
I do not even know if they offer adding the colors in their without going to like stock gauges and such as I have never seen Indian offer other speedometers yet like HD. Which theirs are expensive but LED so you do not have to stick with one color.
@@RabidHedgehog I'm okay with the Speedo being black. I don't like that the whole bike is black. I'd want one of those red/white fuel tank covers to break up all that black.
Looks like to get the bike in any color besides black, you have to buy the phablet on the handlebars. I prefer the plain old speedo.
I was happy to see Yami brought out their new Tenere with no electronic nothings. Rider has to do all the accelerating, shifting, and braking the old fashioned way.
@@saddle8bag I agree with you, I think digital speedometers suck. I love an analog speedometer.
You should should ride less cruisers... it has lowered your standards for what a motorcycle should behave. :-))) Not that the FTR is not worth the positive commentary, but there's plenty of other great motorcycles out there, that behave this same way simply because they are not cruisers. :-) Just kidding... sort of...
My daily is a Standard actually in that CB1100
@@RabidHedgehog Awesome to know, it takes your review to another side. Much appreciated!
Agree I had VFR800 1998 considered best VFR ever made.It handed like a dream faster you went better it tracked and handled never felt anything nervous both front and back and flickable and that roaring cam gear engine...music to soul. Personally looks of this bike seem derivative and uninspiring. Indian could of done a better job in styling considering it is 15k bike which is a lot for standard motorcycle. For 15K you can bike wonderful BMW T9 or Kawasaki retro 900 or Yamaha FZ9
Although true it is and even the Monster 821, but to me it is not the styling in the end it is the ride.
Indian could have built a cutting edge motorcycle but settled instead for a Ducati ripoff........anyone want to buy my Indian motorcycle jacket?
It is far better than just a Ducati rip off. The bike is cutting edge as well hosting the touch interface, something the Duc lacks, tilt sensitive traction control and ABS units, a trellis frame that us completely different than the duc as well with way different riding positions and everything really. I have rode them both and like them both for what they are but a rip off it is not. Better built, better fit and finish, and lack of the Italian electricals, and I can say that cause I do own an Italian.
@@RabidHedgehog Maybe so..but i wanted a fire breathing American stallion and they put out an Italian unicorn.
Did you ride one yet?
