GS snowflake for me. Had it for 2 years. Every time I’ve tried another watch on with this as a reference piece I come back to it. My desire for buying more watches has waned significantly since owning this piece. Wear it every day as a Doctor (in hospitals and GP practice), have worn it with casual clothes, on weekends and with a suit. It really does it all.

You've made my day! I have a Tag formula 1 and i wear it every day. It's in black, doesn't have the metal strap, doesn't attract attention and i've worn it from shower to beach to sea to bar to bed and back to work. its ace.

To me, the Datejust is the obvious pick for this. I know it's not the trendy Rolex, but it has great water resistance, great timekeeping, and manages to be formal enough to also be your "dress" watch. If you have a Datejust it's never really out of place.

My Dad recently got the Tag Heuer F1 as his only watch it’s a great watch. My vote goes for the Omega Aquaterra, attainable for the ordinary man but luxurious and versatile enough that it could be an only forever watch.

Right!?!, I have the black and the Blue and by far they both garner the "Most Wrist Time” award for 2023. Solid piece, has presence, use to set my other watches..so so accurate (10 sec a year!) and the high beat 1/10th Sub Dial is a pleasure to watch . Pusher design unique and solid and great tactile feedback.

Closing in on 1M subs. Well deserved. This channel gives reasonable advice to a broad spectrum of watch enthusiasts and couples it with delightful humour. I’ll admit I defaulted to the TAG Formula 1 years ago. I’m currently lusting for a Grand Seiko from the Evolution 9 collection with the white birch dial and I don’t even care about watches all that much.

With the 'one watch' collection you can look at it two ways: one functional watch that you can go anywhere and do anything with (GADA) watch or one watch that is so unique and so expensive that it is your only watch.
We've seen both approaches taken here (i.e. MB&F vs. Aqua Terra or Longines).

I think the last recommendation is the best. Let's face it, someone who can afford a Lange, will also buy a second watch, but if you do not have many means and only 50 for a watch because the old one broke, those are the people who really need a one watch collection, and the recommendation is spot on

  • @MichaelLaing71
    @MichaelLaing71 Před 10 měsíci +7

As someone who has an addictive personality, I knew that I didn't want to start collecting lots of watches, but probably would unless I found the right watch. That watch was the Hamilton Khaki Aviation Pilot Watch. It was priced just at the right amount to be reasonably expensive but not going into the thousands of pound mark, which would make me wince. It looks great and doesn't feel too small. Also it has some prestige as the other Interstellar watch, which puts it above the Murph watch. Most importantly, I haven't seriously thought about buying a watch since buying it.
Of course, I might have to try wearing it one day.

Sinn, Nomos, Glashutte, etc make several models that could easily qualify as single watch collection daily wearers. Throw in Stowa and even Damasko into that mix. And no Oris pieces from either one of you … c’mon guys!

Another top notch video guys, all good choices. I could add rectangular watches here that would include the Reverso, the Tank or even the Dolce Vita but the WR of these is regarded as a tad pants by some at 30M. For a one watch collection that needs to survive the apocalypse that can still be worn by the next generation of mutated SillySapien (a cross between a human and a beetle that I do not know the name of but I think it's Dave) it just has to be a G-Shock 5610 or of course the venerable F-91W for said mutants in the office environment where the biggest danger will be an over filled kettle.

If you’re going with a quartz, go with a solar, if solar then citizen eco drive! I think Citizen gets the reputation of being a “Mall Watch” company because most reviews people see are of watches from malls. The higher end citizen watches are amazing. Promaster, signature series, series 8, the citizen, and chronomaster are all great watches punching way above their weight.

The one watch collection that was aspirational enough for the masses but discerning enough for the snobs has to be the Aquaterra Day Date; only offered a few years so it’s rare-ish and the silver dial with rose gold indicies is sporty enough for a day with the boys but formal enough for a suit. And you can actually find it on the market.

I'm saving this to my rarely used Favourites folder. When I get my abundance, I may get more than one from these. A one watch for a year challenge, I might get into. Right now I get a lot of wrist time from a Pagani Design "Daytona" that's utterly illegible to me. It's just at home on my wrist, what can I say? That GS Snowflake though...I'd take that shopping for bespoke suits. And I need to.

I bought a Forzo drive king just as a beater but have been blown away by the build quality. I can take it off for a few weeks and when I get it again it doesn't need setting or winding. Mine has no second hand so it's not too obviously a quartz and the chronograph moves like an auto, also a 24hr bezel insert, so super useful. Fantastic watch for the money and definitely not a beater!

Love my Duro, it's been a daily for over 2yrs.
I'm VERY hard on watches, have NO scratches on the crystal. Although I bang mine almost daily on metal monos and shelving, and the mineral crystal is just fine.
A few scratches and a little ding on the aluminum insert, with minimal scratching on the case(not really noticeable).
The lume is not great, no issues with the crown, and the second hand hitting the markers is hit or miss(no pun intended). It appears to get better with time, btw. Mine was almost perfect right out of the box.
I've spent more on straps then on the watch and Love it... Spends most of its time on a StrapCode 22mm Super-J Louis JUB Watch Band Straight End, 316L Stainless Steel Solid V-Clasp Button Double Lock.

That Forzo chrono really caught my eye! However, practically speaking, I prefer the functionality and diversity of a nice diver. I use the moving bezel all the time for timing or counting so my BB58 gets the most wrist time, along with my Christopher Ward C60’s. I would include the Sub, but these days there are public places where I wouldn’t want to show it.

After many years, my one one done is the Grand Seiko SBGN003 - after 3 years the change in time is +/- 0.0s.... You cannot beat that. True GMT, GS looks and quality, and super cheap to keep (service costs on mechanicals and even spring drives can be quite high). And not too expensive used. Good at doing anything too - about 2000 dollars these days in good shape. Classic good looks that can go from formal to the mountain climb.

A One Watch for me would have to be able to handle the boardroom and sporting fields. This Casio is a great choice, but my vote goes to the GM-B2100GD-5A, AKA the rose gold Casioak. It's rugged enough for sea and land and looks Oaky enough to go with a suit.

I have several watches but always revert back to the Seiko King Turtle, Full Black Samurai Limited Edition when I travel or when I needed an outdoor watch to take the heat. It has an in your face classic 1970s turtle shape and doesn’t feel out of its league even when I am in an Omega or JLC boutique.
If I ever need to escape and take only one watch with me. That would be it.

The Forzo Drive King looks beautiful in the baby blue. But none found online in that design. Any idea where it can be found?

I did that. I could have bought 10 watches for every occasion or buy just one and be done.. Well a true enthousiast is never done but right now I can't afford more.
So for now one and done.
41 datejust fluted dial fluted bezzel on the birth day of my son. Didn't care how much it was, I got it and it's his 21birthday gift from his old man. Done!

The Bathyscaphe can be had as a chronograph. And there's a 2020-2021 version in titanium (grade 23?) that comes with a really good bracelet.
A one watch collection should come with a good bracelet. Otherwise you'll always want another one for sure.

I stumbled on the one watch that does it all for me, after trying several different types of watches. In my case it is a blue Seiko Flightmaster. It took me a while to realize what I need. Tool watch looks, quartz for accuracy and ease, and a 12hr chronograph. Not so easy to find quartz with a 12hr chrono. Is it possible I'm the only person on earth who actually used the chronograph on their watch??!! Oh, and if I ever need to convert km to nm on the fly, I can't find my phone and I have a loupe in order to read the slide rule, I can do that.

I'm surprised neither of you mentioned the CasiOak, especially the GM-B2100, full metal, analog and digital, AP looks with Gshock invulnerability, I would pick the yellow gold or the stainless steel.

Been rocking the 38 mill Aqua Terra in steel and Sedna Gold on a leather strap for a while. Elegant looking piece with a sporty spec.
I ain’t swimming with this, so a leather strap is okay for me

For a single watch I would go for a Patek Aquanaut with a Caliber 31‑260 PS QA LU FUS 24H (like the Patek 5326G) in steel with a rubber strap. 2 slight problems. 1 it does not exist and 2 if it did I couldn’t afford it.

I recently bought a Orient Kamasu Automatic 20 bar with Teal dial for £230...a beautiful watch and the colour changes with various lighting...as im texting its more of a navy blue but when the sun is out the green within the Teal shines through and in other moments you can get a lovely almost Black dial. For me its £230 well spent. I alternate this watch with my £220 Seiko 5 Automatic 100m Blue Sun Burst dial Field watch. £450 , two watches and im Happy...although my next buy will be the £300 mark.

The watch that started it all for me was a black dial Aqua Terra with vertical teak dial. Day Date version. I do like it but now that I do have other watches I can't help but notice how high it sits on the wrist because of the design of the sapphire case back.
