- Along Jamaica’s impoverished southern coast, Billy “Mystic” Wilmot and his sons have built an unlikely surf community and pioneered many of the island’s best waves. But for the next generation of Jamaican surfers, surfing is more than a pastime. It’s the potential for a better life. For our September Issue, Dylan Graves and Dane and Tanner Gudauskas ventured to Jamaica to experience the island’s surf scene.

he complains about other countries getting slave reparations and Jamaica not. I also lived in Grenada nearish to Jamaica for two years. Although we were well off enough, the West Indies is still full of third world countries.
Gabriel Messam Yes but Jamaica still has a lot of beauty and happiness in it and you can call it a "third world country" and focus on the negatives but there's no place like Jamaica.

that is one of the funniest looking waves it reminds me of lowers but it wedges more and has a sick Barrel going left and right. I remember drive thru... Billy was telling Taylor Steele, Donavan, Pat, & others to keep there surf spot a secret. He didn't want Jamaica to be a surf destination. I guess the secret is out.
Now our kids are good enough to rule the spots... not worried any more... and plus... there is no surf in Jamaica!!!

kelly slaters from florida. theres an infinite amount of days in the future. i'd say the odds are one day a Jamaican will be world champ. Brazilians weren't even on the tour for a long ass time. 10 years ago de souza was the first Brazilian to qualify. look at the Brazilian storm now. and surfing is in the olympics now giving every country even more incentive to support professional surfers. quit hating and go surf bud.
Rap Gawd de Souza wasn't the first. Fabio Gouveia and Flavio Padaratz qualified back in 1990 . De souza was the first Brazilian to win the world tour though.

I was there in 2016 and never saw a surf spot since I was rushed by Touring Guide. I am going back after all this Pandemic gets controlled. What part of the island gets the best surf and is there a surfboard rental on the island ?
what's the name of their band and do they have recorded songs? Im a musician (primiarily bassist)/Surfer and this is the ultimate lifestyle, and he is playing a mighty fine 6 string bass!

How does a south facing island in the Caribbean even have surf? Just looked at Magic Seaweed and it looks like there is surf here 50% of the time most months. WTF?
