Is This The Best Right Point In The World? | SURFER Magazine | Wish You Were Here: Point Perfection

- “The most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen in my life,” is how filmmaker Diogo d’Orey describes the mysto, fickle righthand point that he and surfer Antonio Silva recently scored on a strike mission. The wave immediately conjures up mental comparisons to an inverse Skeleton Bay. Or even more recently, the hollow right-handed sandblaster Mick Fanning refers to as, “The Snake.”
“For what I know, Mick Fanning’s wave is Snapper Rocks,” d’Orey smugly answers when asked if the wave is the same as Fanning’s. “I don’t know if it’s the same wave. I’m sure it’s not Snapper Rocks.”
It’s definitely not Kirra, J-bay or Salina Cruz either, but is it the best right in the world? Hit play to watch “Wish You Were Here: Point Perfection” and you be the judge. - Sport
You can’t fool me - this is Malibu. They did some clever CGI to get rid of the pier & crowds.
Jason Jackson Buah ha ha! They deleted out the 150 snakes dropping in on the shoulder on every wave.

4:50 something about clear water waves makes getting pounded so much less scary
@Alexander MCINTYRE seeing the bottom when it's crystal clear water and sharp jagged coral and urchins a few feet below you is not fun. I think this is nice because it's just sand.
jimmythefish I surf in New England and a lot of the spots are boulder fields and on the rare occasion that we have clear water it makes it less scary bc I know where not to fall. When the water is murky you might just land on a boulder and that always sucks
@@jimmythefish ill take the reef, and sea urchins vs murky waters.

Those that know don't talk. And those that talk don't know. What you folks clearly don't know is that some things are worth never talking about. My condolences to the locals who call this home.
Aaron Greer most of the locals there don’t surf. Some do and they run a surf camp. It’s hard to get there but not so hard you can’t and it is fairly close to several major resorts. They actually surfed several spots in the same area and the wave is no where near as long of a ride as they say. It could potentially be that long on a perfect angle swell but no one there ever claimed it was. I have sailed into there twice and stayed a good long time. I’ve got great waves there but Malibu first point long, not what they say.
This reminds me of discovering Punts Mita and Sayulita in the early 90’s before the road north of Puerto Vallarta was paved to get up there. 4-5 great breaks. Warm water. No crowds and only locals. It was heaven on the right swell. We used to watch the bouys and charge from San Diego on a 180-190 south swell in late summer. Some of the best sessions ever. Now there are 2 hotels and it’s swarming with people.
Veneros
I remember those days. Never saw other surfers. Total zoo now
The same for Mundaka, when we surfed it was absolute perfection in the late 80s, early 90s, then the oil spill occurred, they had to dredge the banks for wildlife and oil and it was messed up proper bad, it still hasn't really been the same. Same with Playa Des Americas and Los Christianos in Tenerife, some perfect waves, Spanish left for example, but then they put the jetties in and they are no longer... It seems like the rest of society just don't want to make surfers happy 🙄
A little after early 90s, but I was lucky enough to "house sit" for someone nearby at Punta Burros in 2001. I had that place almost to myself for an entire summer and surfed it every day. Only a few people in the water, and so many waves to go around. What a time...
@@adriantroalic9298 The dredge in mundaka had nothing to do with the oil spill and the wildlife. The dredge was only to be able to deliver a boat made in the Murueta boat maker down the river. It screwed mundaka really bad for a couple of years
Here's an idea. If you like solitude, go surf the waves, snap a few pics for your memory, then go home and lock it all away. Doing a big exploitive video on it and them claiming to be hardcore explorers is hilarious.
thats a pretty idea. All chill yeah whatever in the video. then secret location PR stunt. Surfing is caught up in the instagram whirlpool of branding like everything else.

Carlos Silva you're wrong., There is a new hotel and resort being built close to this wave right now. Someone pointed it out on reddit. The place is going to be packed as soon as it opens.
Haha "I wanna get away from the crowds...solitude." Great, let's make a video and show the crowds. "No we won't share location." Let's make a video. Neurotic.

“Praia Santa Monica” good luck getting there unless you have a sailboat ⛵️. Cape Verde. October-November.
Pin up boys blowing another location... certainly not soul surfers.

this clip is so great . it reminds me of the endless summer. i wish i was with you guys
Wow that ride in the middle of the video. Too big for me to think about paddling out, but my god what a pleasure to watch.
Reminds me of those "Backpacker" magazine articles - 'The Last 10 Secret Spots'.
Looks like Praia Santa Monica (Bona Vista) Africa, that’s for all the wankers saying its a secret, waves are there to be enjoyed they’re not owned by anyone. My local is Ship Wreck Bay Ahipara New Zealand, anything over a 2m swell with a south westerly wind gives very nice left handers
Shippies is one of my favorite waves.
wooow i never knew Praia Santa Mónica beach was so nice and a nice video about it is pretty cool to watch
Heaven for me would be an island with this wave on one side of the island and skeleton bay(with clear blue water) on the other. Soooo clean and beautiful. Definitely going to church tomorrow🤙

Just what this place needs, loads more Brazilian surfers with their terrible etiquette and attitude. I'm sorry for the locals.
Don't need to be man, they can be as ruf as the Brazilians
Lol the locals are dangerous and don’t even surf. You need to hire guys with ak-47 to gaurd you safely in the car while you go to this spot.
I remember this brazilian that dropped on my wave, I didn't say anything, just did the same to him like 15 min later and I got barrelled 8 seconds and came out through the foamball, small wave though, I have a pic sequence, almost like 12 pics

There were people here already when Cook went exploring. These guys didn't discover anything either. Their legacy is following in the footsteps of those before them who said "check this place out, its hard to get to so should be quiet".

Heavy!! Soo sick. Water color is insaane!! Creds to the aliens for giving this to us 😄✌️✌️
At 4:48, if I was out there.... just the water color alone is so unreal. I've had sessions at my home break, it's a jetty w/a river mouth and at a -.04 low tide the color in summer is similar. Nice waves, thanks for showing the video bra
the first part of this is totally annoying: "some people like comfort. I like to surf perfect waves with just me and my friends". No you jerk, everyone likes surfing perfect waves with just their friends. Just some of us have lives where we have to work and can't just jump on a plane and travel to the desert on the other side of the world when a swell pops up.
Well these guys used this as a money making endeavour by making a surf film about it.

Praia de Santa Mónica is a sandy beach in the southwestern part of the island of Boa Vista in Cape Verde. The nearest village is Povoação Velha, 5 km to the north. The beach is adjacent to the protected area Morro de Areia Nature Reserve, which is important for endemic birds and turtles
are you sure that's the place ?

This spot is Awesome! Perfection! But it made me think of the movie "CHASING MAVERICKS" All it takes is one person to spill the beans! Then it's GAME OVER! Then it's no SECRET ANYMORE!
If your surfing such a remote location like that, do you surf with a knife strapped to your leg? In case you come across some sharks or locals?
Awesome but I wish there were more beach angle shots of the guys surfing.
I wonder if this is Western Sahara. There just aren't too many places within striking distance of Portugal with uninhabited 20km sandy bays. There are beaches in Western Sahara that are covered in crabs. You can fly from anywhere in Portugal to Gran Canaria, then to Nouadhibou, rent a car, and cross back into Western Sahara.
The Canary and Cape Verde islands are all volcanic and quick to get around, so I'd rule them out. Mauritania proper is even more remote, expensive, and unsafe. It's dangerous to drive around unless you're in a company caravan and know where the minefields are.
You have it in first paragraph.....
its already been answered where it is, but i do agree that western sahara is holding more of these kind of waves than we could count on 2 hands. The only problem is the isolation and as you mentioned, landmines. Towards the bottom of western saharah are a few waves that I believe are possibly the best rights in the world.
4:50 thats what surfing day dreaming looks like.

Bye bye wave...marina coming. “As the Island's most prized asset, planned development will play a key role in the future prosperity of Boa Vista. Fully endorsed by the Cape Verdean Government, Santa Monica Beach is the spectacular location for six new developments planned by The Resort Group PLC.
The master plan will incorporate an impressive marina, developed in partnership with some of the world’s leading hotel brands. This will transform Santa Monica into a truly exclusive and unparalleled beach destination, whilst preserving the Island’s unique and unexplored edge.”
FFS, this isn't a secret! The only exploring they did was finding the number of their concierge mate who works at the hotel two bays around and a little bit of storm knowledge. Mpanada13 - maybe, but it will get crowded just like Skeleton Bay, Western Oz, Puerto Escondido etc. - you cannot hide from today’s technology. Someday soon with the aid of the now available underwater geography mapping, you’ll have UAV’s hired to fly all of the coastal waters looking for surf spots.
it´s even harder to break than skeleton bay. needs a really big swell.

Perfection is subjective regardless of what you are talking about. Waves, beach, hiking tails, ski slopes etc. I found out that the pros and cons balance out. Seclusion might = danger, lack of emergency help, food. Incredible = crowded, touristy etc. I found my invisible cobalt blue water "heaven" on earth similar to above but it was a live razor sharp reef, shallow with fire coral, angry fishermen and shady local authorities towards Americans.
Yes but where exactly is this at!?
