- Climate change and conflicts around the world, especially in Ukraine, are threatening food security globally. The problem is particularly difficult in Africa where a record number of people are facing hunger.
DW’s Blaise Eyong met up with a businessman and farmer aiming to promote smart agriculture in the village of Dibombari, Cameroon.

If the entire world grew in greenhouses, our food supply would grow, and stabilize, because we can grow year-round, in all climates. Where we do not have enough light, water, and nutrients, we can create, or bring these in. Greenhouses change EVERYTHING.
Not EVERYTHING🙃, but a lot, also smaller physical footprint, more economical use of resources and water, etc. Now add fish, chickens and worms for nutrients, etc. Add now biogas, solar and wind and you're well on your way

Will you grow rice, maize, wheat in greenhouse?

This could really help the continent sustain its food resources and replenish them when demand is high.
Self-reliance is the key. Greenhouses and other innovative farming will help promote independence. A continual reliance on other countries results in decreased motivation over time. Rain catchment systems during the rainy season along with water diversion in drier regions for crops and livestock.

@Jane Delaney. Greenhouses in Africa..? hottest place on the planet..Northern Africa is one of the driest regions on Earth, home to the Sahara desert, the largest hot desert in the world. This extremely dry region, where it's not uncommon to have no rain for over a year in some places was once a tropical humid area. Good luck with the rain catchement systems.
This is the future of agriculture for everyone. We should implement it globally.

Greenhouses seem a good idea- but start with local products and the local climate to work with. In the Netherlands, we grow foreign products, needing some extra energy. With current gas prices, its getting expensive. Yes, there are alternatives to gas or other fossile energie to heat.
But maybe its smarter for every nation to start with controlled growth of own natural products, rather then imported ones. Greatest challenge is green transport of goods, not growing it. Economic laws prevented a lot of common sense, but now it seems getting different.
But i must add: African and other warm climates have probably more choice to a diversity of products to grow, because heating and light are more available, and most plants and crops like that.

Well, double edged sword. Much of Africa is too arid for large scale crops. Are you suggesting building dams and diverting water, which would greatly alter existing ecosystems? Turning wild lands with very unique and diverse wildlife into farmland will put further pressure on said wildlife. I read so often how angry people from our more modern countries get at Brazilian farmers for clearing forests to create farmland. How would it be different in Africa? Only, in Brazil water is much easier to find. Africa? Be careful what you wish for. Would you exchange dams, reservoirs and farmland for biodiversity and species extinction?
The Netherlands are distribute their greenhouse technologies to the entire globe, so this seems to be one of the many nations in Africa doing greenhouse agriculture.
And greenhouse agriculture if done correctly in Africa, it could become a huge booming business for Africa, beyond Starvation and reliance from western countries.
So i'm rooting for Africa to become really self sustainable and competent in the food sector..
Would African greenhouses need energy to heat? They could use shade cloth to reduce excessive heat so stuff that can't survive outside heat can be grown. Sunken greenhouses are partially insulated so the temperature is more constant. If there are regions where it is rainy or windy, greenhouses can also protect crops.
They should grow stuff that people demand. Whether it is indigenous or not shouldn't matter as long as there is demand and they can grow it.
I am in Scotland. I shudder to think what my diet would be if we only ate stuff that was native.
Smart move: Grow whatever you can yourself.
Environmentally sustainable agricultural production is the way to go for Africa. We need more of these innovative ventures all over Africa to bring more youths into industrialized agriculture where there are better economic gains and chances for food security. The governments also need to support such initiatives with specifically targeted programs to use the huge unemployed youth population who want to venture into agriculture. What a blessing -- green-house planting and harvesting has become in modern times. Lots of produce varieties now in the supermarkets in Africa -- where heat can often be intolerable for inhabitants and crops. No one is going to bed hungry now. Praise God. be blessed.

Greenhouse farming was talked about alot 15-20 years ok. There was even a big special on tv about it. It seemed like such a wonderful idea and then you never heard anymore about it.
it was the west who talkd about it. the west only talks do nothing. because they rather steal their recourses then actually helping them. But now china is in Africa since 2007 helping them. the west all of a sudden cares. its actually sad. just pathetic how the west is really

I'm proud of you for doing that now you can continue growing and growing and you will not starve I know that you need what they're doing but you can grow like a wheat and sunflowers
THis is such a great project ! and I hope efforts like these will grow and attract more people to learn to provide green house-grown produce to their communities. Bringing in greenhouse environment - with constant water supply and protection from damaging weather - the entire continent could turn their food shortage problems around. Africans are not going to wait for grocery stores to stock up.
The people of western Europe are feeling the hanger as well. Don't used Africa as a scapegoats

All areas still forest viable should reforest diversely with maximum effort, forests shade the soil, retain water in soil, holds it together, capture carbon and create water & clouds above land... the number 1 terraforming force on Earth is nature...we've distanced ourselves from it and attacked it and excavated and extracted it for decades, centuries.. heal it before it's too late.
I love to suport that! Of and on, I'm looking for good (say most effective/efficient etc) charitys that fight Climate change etc, but I've never really found a good list of charitys that produce "the most Bang for your Buck"

Aspire's the new plant will reportedly produce 9000 metric tons of crickets yearly for human and pet consumption. Africa has tons of locusts whipping along the Masai Mara Nairobi area all year.

Your answer is no. Greenhouse farming cannot be grown or harvested in great enough bulk to fill any more than niche needs.

Obviously, someone who confuses incest with grain production and harvesting has bigger issues than picking berries in his yard. Is family near? Can they help? This incest issue, really seems very close to home for you. Did your dad or your mom’s boyfriend do nasty things to you? Find help. You don’t have to live with this obsession.
Good job Africa, hopefully the governments there will get more involved into assisting farmers to boost local production - it is indeed in a weird way also a "blessing" for Africa, it brought this problem to the front.

Africa is in need of a widespread irrigation system that supplies water to the areas most needed. If countries can build gas pipelines across a continent, then other countries can build water pipelines too.
