- Permaculture instructor Andrew Millison journeys to Senegal to see a movement of forest gardens which are contributing to Africa's Great Green Wall. Andrew accompanies the organization Planet Wild to visit the excellent work of Trees for the Future. Planet Wild is funding the planting of 40,000 trees in this project so we are here to assess the system and report on the situation on the ground.
💬 🔜 🌳 Comment to plant a tree! - Planet Wild will plant one extra tree for everyone who leaves a comment below before the end of 2023. Let’s plant some trees together!

Thank you! This is permaculture heaven for me. All that lushness. Hopefully they keep expanding the wall northward, which I truly believe can happen.
It will help if we can change larger scale farming practices everywhere to something closer to restoration ag, a la Mark Shepard. This will further support regreening into drier areas. This will bring more food diversity to the local and global marketplace, localize resilience everywhere, as well as economic prosperity.
Love where you entertained the kids. Whole new side of you that is great.
Sri Lanka is being toted as a failure of organic agriculture since farmers were forced to stop using chemical inputs. It would be swell if you looked into this because we all could use a little understanding of what went wrong there if so much success was experienced elsewhere?
@@drakedorosh9332 To fast to soon, organic farming needs time to establish both in the fields and in markets. Ham fisted policies are not the way to do it.
Funny! I was following both channels already and did not expect you two to make a video together! Such a cool collaboration
This is simply one of the most important stories on the internet and one of the most most feel-good stories amidst a sea of horror in the world. It's tragic that this isn't getting more views...thank you so much, Andrew. Spreading this news is extremely critical.
Don't worry about the views yet, I only released it 6 minutes ago :-)
I agree. It has the wonderful feel good factor. It truly makes me think almost anything is possible.
Totally agree this is HUGE - unfortunately the media doesn’t report on progress that’s being made - except for the odd one-off feel good story
In 4 hours this video has 1,600 views. I think it's doing just fine.
@@kcarter016 You can't see the true numbers. In 5 hours this video has 18,500 views :-)
I am chairman of Gambia School Support, we assist 11 pre-primary schools in The Gambia with 1,500 pupils. Most of the schools have 'gardens'. The constraint is water supply as no rain for most of the year. Where we have solar boreholes the gardens and growth is amazing. A Moringa seed planted in Feb is now a 12ft tree!
That's amazing - 12-ft of growth on a Moringa tree?!?😲🥳😎
Amazing story
@catherineincanada1874 I have a big one on my family's property. We cut it all the time and it grows so fast and leans onto the neighbor's roof. And it made little moringa baby plants everywhere.
You're blessed indeed@@yumiyumitao3324💖the tree of life, so many health benefits in one food! it's tricky growing here, esp northern Canada. Must be brought indoors during our heavy winters, so without heated year-round greenhouse won't grow to such enviable heights 😟
Hi, if you are interested in sharing ideas, I used to help run a project that did school gardens and environmental education. If you don't mind answering, is there any cooking going on at the schools? You could use the grey water from the kitchens to water at least some plants. There are videos by Andrew Millison on how to do this. You could also look into drip irrigation. We used to have a college professor who gave us workshop on different farming techniques so that we could adapt the ideas for the children.
Programmers like this show that there is a glimmer of hope for humanity.
Watching humanity at its best almost brought me to tears. I’d grown numb to all the terrible news. A million thanks for all you do and educating me.
It's such a relief to see people coming up with real solutions to ending poverty AND saving the environment.
I am so glad that there is people out there doing it. On the other hand it is sad that the people living in Senegal did not get the necessary help from the government from the start. Screw education on maths and science. Teach them how to farm.
I agree. We are the power that makes things happen. We can decide how we direct that power. We can come together to put solutions into effect. I believe we can save our beautiful planet.
There's no valid reason why we have desserts in planet earth besides laziness and lack of initiatives such as this the profit driven corporations rather have the world dry and the select few of their farming friends making money at the expense of global warming.
If companies such as Coca-Cola and them can join hands in this initiative, global warming can become a thing of a past
I SEE WHITE PEOPLE LIVING OFF BLACK PEOPLE
I hate to be nitpicky, but farming relies on mathematic and scientific principles, you can teach both. Farming would be fundamentally difficult without understanding the water cycle, and you can better divvy up your land by understanding maths.@@reynardbrits2839
We need to see this in the West! Less Lawns, more local Farms!
I am old enough to remember the 1970s. When the price of oil set off inflation, everyone was planting gardens in their back yards. I think part of the problem you are pointing out is that life has been too easy for too long.
It would be a good start if HOA allows every person to grow at least tomato plants on their front yard
You'll have to contend with that so called property value thing... Yet a more vibrant surrounding should have more value. But nope... It gotta be grass and one or two 3m trees...
@@dv9239Honestly. HOAs are so bloody stupid and hold back neighbourhoods so so much. Hearing about them makes me angry pfft
@@dv9239 it’s a long road, but we really need people who get it to join the HOAs and change the rules.
Thank you for helping us. We all drink the same water, we all breath the same air. We can create happy lives for us all.
I'm really impressed by the work this family put into their garden!
Agree. good work.
I live in Sierra Leone and one of my goals is to share this knowledge with farmers so that we can all benefit from the food, shade, and the beauty of a forest-garden that provides season after season. Thanks for sharing and keep planting those trees!!
For the tree
Wonderful! These diverse food forests are bountiful blessings for the food they produce, and also for the microclimate they create which attracts insects (some of them beneficial, like honeybees and other pollinators) and birds who will eat the insects and keep the numbers down.
Once you get earthworms established, the soil is really happy
That's the way to do it! Give people a helping hand to make most of their land, help the planet & the people.
Contact me if you're interested in knowing more. I can share manuals and tips on how tftf works
I am a third generation farmer grown old,,,,and am so blown away by this project,,,it’s absolutely wonderful and wish I were once again in my twenties so I could follow this model on our land. I will research these techniques and share them with my son. Thank you for helping turn the tide on our desert lands and help people learn sustainability ❣️❣️🙏🏽💕
That’s fantastic! I’m thrilled that you’ve been inspired by this & that you’re in a position to act on it, even in a small way. I wish you good luck : )
Thank you for all you do as a farmer
Thank you for helping spread the knowledge! 👍 These methods can make a big difference to people everywhere, but people have to know about them first.
@notashroom this topic is all over youtube. People can find out by using search terms such as *regenerative agriculture*, etc. People have to have more curiosity about their world, if they want to see more of what inspires them.
@@pipfox7834 people need an idea that such options exist before they can guess at good search terms to find out about it.
Honestly didn't expect to get some hope for the future out of a random youtube video, thanks for the good vibes :)
I’ve been a Trees For The Future donor for years! Great to see what they’ve been working on.
As an ecological engineer, I like the idea that "we need diversity to face instability". seeing a solution that has a diverse outcome and also brings yields is really an amazing idea.
It's totally an answer that's in line with evolutionary biology, monoculture breeds disease that will kill monoculture.
Diversification suffers the same problem, but has more escape routes.
Love this❤
I am proud to say that I have donated enough to Trees For the Future to support One Family in Kenya to have the tools and seedlings needed to plant a Forest Garden, and to remain in the program for 4 years.
That is wonderful! the satisfaction of helping others
Do you mind saying how much money, and how many acres that covers? If not, no worries
I have a farm in Kitui county, Kenya. Acquired it to help conserve and restore degraded land in the region. As a Msc Dryland Resource Management student, I long and stand to bring out the change, change starts with me. Any help for seedlings is welcomed
Brilliant, I'd like to know how to do this!
Very good.
This project is excellent. I love that they focus on educating the local people so that they are able to maintain the project without foreign intervention.
The use of permaculture can -and will, with support - save many lives, both human and wild. Keep of the good work, and thank you.
Such a stark contrast between the monocropping system and the food forest. Truly mindblowing.
Would like to remind you that just over 100 years ago 80% of countries GDP was dedicated to just food, now is around 15% in developed countries and farmers account for about 5% of workforce. Establishing This type of small family run farms is a step backwards and it will ensure Senegal will never be able to compete with mega farms.
@@Pit5336 the point isn't to compete with mega farms, but to fix the ecosystem and create a better environment. The food is an added benefit
@@Pit5336I think they mention that this is not what the entire farm is going to be but a section of the farm ,also I don’t fully know if it can be replicated this method on a 500+ hectare of farming but if it can then it is definitely beneficial for commercial farming .
@@Pit5336you completely missed the point of this video

Andrew and Markus are the best!!
It's so inspiring to know that we create abundance when working with Earth's natural systems.
Awesome idea to feed people in such a way and heal the Earth.
We learned about the Great Green Wall in Sahel back in secondary school (~2015), but only covered the failure. Only now do I know that the programme has gained so much traction when utilising a new approach!! Well done to Plant Wild, Trees for Future and the local communities 👏👏
It is the failure news culture, failure news are easy to sell . So sad .
It is mind boggling, I didn't know you could get that much growth within a food forest in just two years! Truly a gift that keeps giving.
It's amazing. I think because it never freezes. I sadly only get 90-100 frost free days but doing what I can!
@@cupbowlspoonforkknif I hope that you are able to overcome that my friend! I believe one day your food Forest will have settled and become strong enough to survive your winters!
It really is. Thank you for the support!!
Undeniably a shift in thinking and practice that is much needed around the world! BRAVO!!!
I am overwhelmed with the love and pride of these communities..
I grew up on a farm and my grandfather often talked about the poor farming practices that led to the dust bowl and poor farm land. Now we have crop rotation, windbreaks, contour farming, that saved the small family farm.
killing prairie dogs also led to dust bowl
To be fair, they refused to comply and resisted arrest. @@hiteshj2447
8000 by one NGO. Outstanding! Imagine what we could achieve as a species if we all had this passion.
Or spend our money more wisely. We could populate a significant portion of the sarah again. Providing both work, food and a world wide reduction in CO2 left in the atmosphere. Solves so many things altogether.
But hey since when do level headed ideas prevail.
that level headed ideas wont work if the average citizens in most countries dont even have savings after their necessities and living paycheck to paycheck, they can only think how to survive the next week let alone care about other people or even pollution, thats the govt job to regulate them anyway lol
Mangoes 🥭 would be a sweet benefit
@@RoachDoggJr2 I'm sure other NGOs are doing things like that. I'm no expert but what I've read about permaculture is pretty incredible in terms of restoring habitats, improving water tables and using sustainable farming methods to boost crop yields. It's all stuff that you have to teach people. These guys are doing an amazing service.
@@RoachDoggJr2 There are NGOs that do that. Even ones that supply doctors and nurses to such places (never heard of traveling nurses or doctors without borders?).
Most of the work shown in the video is done by the locals themselves, the NGO only has to provide training and possibly the treestock - not sure whether they do or not. But either way, they use very little resources to get great progress towards their goal. It's a surprisingly efficient setup.
This is a Amazing project that Planet Wild has embarked on!🌴🌎
Go Andrew. I hope you keep busy the next 60 years turning that whole region into 50 million hectares of Food Forests across several countries in Western and Northern Africa.
The best and unspoken benefit is to stabilize the ecosystem but it also stabilizes the human society as well. Prosperity means just that, the ability to sustain a good life using a sustainable life style and agriculture.
In a world filled with war and violence this was a breath of fresh air to watch. Planet wild are doing amazing work, please don't stop.
Most of the world is NOT fill with violence or war. Stop watching the News so much...They make money off of your fear.
Seeing farmers become part of the solution to our changing climate and desertification puts a smile on my face and a new breath of hope in my lungs.

Spot on. Thank you for your support!!
the great green wall is in an arid zone predominantly = rainfall in food forest appears to be opposite arid = what is the rainfall here in the tropical food forest ????

Great project.
Four years ago I stopped cutting my lawn in a small area because I noticed some raspberry plants were there. Last year I was able to pick enough to get my daily fill, this year I am starting to expand out hoping to make jam. It's been fun (and delicious), but the most rewarding part has been watching my eight year old see the time it takes, but also the reward.
this should be all across Africa!
Plant diversity is something Western agriculture should learn from this project.
We have in many places.. back east.. mid west ..and westcoast !!
Good luck to my Sénégalais 🇸🇳 brothers from Morocco 🇲🇦. Very inspiring video and very motivated people. Let's go Africa

Probably one of the best initiatives when it comes to humanitarian aid for Africa, they are educated how they can feed and provide for their family more reliably and with the extra income the kids can be sent to school.
They are breaking the cycle of poverty and bringing in the abundance.
