That is a pricey one. I did smell it at TRC and thought it smelled outstanding. I just wish that anyone who buys it, enjoys it thoroughly. Have a great day.
We are truly blessed to have so many different opinions in this hobby. While this may not be a soap for most wet shavers, I appreciate the fact this artisan is using the very best ingredients that they can source. This is enough to make me want to try it. Have a great Friday.
Plenty of soap makers make soap using the very best ingredients they can source that cost half as much. T+S being just one example. There's not a single ingredient in that soap that can't be found in $16-$20 dollar soap... but to each their own, etc
@@sterlingcampbell2116 the closest soap in terms of ingredients would be 345 soap co, still its not the same but like 85%, and i consider 345 soap one of the best, others are far from those in terms of ingredients, very first batch Frank did of 100 soaps, was 40+ dollars in production cost, he was selling it for $32 at a loss So the answer is no you cant find soaps with same quantity of quality ingredients in soap for $20 even $30, you would have from some of them to most of them, but not all of them On top of that 7,5oz of Ethos lasts forever, it lasted me 9 months of daily shaving, 345 soap co 4oz jar lasts me 2,5 to 3 months, if we take into consideration cost per shave they are quite identical
Nice! I don't make soaps, but being a maker I have some understanding of using very high quality materials and how that translates into a finished product. It's also a balancing act and if a material is going to drive the price too high, I'd look for an alternative. I'm already seeing some prices, that are out of my comfort zone and this one leaps past those. The Alpha Outlaw is great and it's always nice to hear that they're having a deal on it. I'm looking forward to watching the show tonight and catching up on what has been going on. It should be a fun one!
Wonderful shave but at 9.50 an ounce TWD. There is no way for me, but like you said there are some who will feel that it is a superior product. Stay safe and have a wonderful weekend.
That scent sounds very invigorating! In fairness you said you bought the soap for it's scent and you know the scenting ingredients to be of very high quality. That'll be why the cost is so high. I'll bet profit margin wise Ethos won't make much more than other soapmaker's. It's the same for all products, yeah you can buy a jar of freeze dried coffee for $5 and 100 cups from it or you could also pay $30 for a bag of single origin Ethiopian Yigracheffe beans. Both technically make a cup of coffee.
I have no way of knowing whether the ingredients are high quality or not. I can say the scent is fantastic. In performance, it's just a good soap. It's not special at all. The price for 4oz of soft creamy soap is just too high for me.
Another awesome shave from the Alpha Outlaw in the books, Chris. Ethos is too pricy for me but I have no doubts about it being very high quality. As I’ve said before, anyone outside the hobby would say that most of what we consider to be normal stuff is an extravagance.
I’ll still keep my eye on them for a scent I like combined with a sale maybe lol. I also just used what I’d call my best personal discovery in scent in a few years, extro cosmesi liquoriza and magnolia and I’m so glad I used the aftershave today for a great Friday!
Ethos is very expensive but I do like their scents. Probably the highest quality oils used in the scent. I missed out on Blood Orange but I own the Lemon, Grapefruit, and DFS Colonia. I don't think the base provides anything that Wholly Kaw or A&E don't but for me I would rather have less soaps but higher quality (scents). $9oz is very expensive for a soap though lol
Like you said not a soap on my radar, plenty of excellent soaps with great scents at half the price, even essential oil scented ones. The Outlaw seems well like by those that have one.👍😎👌
Yea, I can't justify the cost. The soap is good - middle of the pack probably, the scent is great. Still, it's just too much for 4oz of creamy soft shaving soap.
I'm agreeing with many of the people here in the comments that the price is just too high, no matter how good it smells. I get the high-end and exclusive nature of certain products and I think they have their place. Maybe that's the point here. They are pricing it to be exclusive and aren't worried about the fact that most people won't buy it. Fair enough. I accept that it's not for me and move on. I'm glad that you got to try it however and can tell us that it does, in fact, smell very good. As always, thanks for the video. I hope you had a great day!
I think it's meant to be a high end product but I don't think it's good enough to land there. It's a high end product in price, and the scent is fantastic, but I don't think it's there in terms of truly being premium.
Hi Chris, Ethos sounds like a good solid soap with a nice scent, and I agree with you that at $9.50 an ounce it’s just too expensive. Plus there are so many other amazingly great artisan soaps that have great scents and perform well, so this one is a pass for me. I do appreciate your honest review of the soap (as you always do). If you had found that this soap could magically prevent any and all nicks and prevent skin irritation, then that would be something, but, absent those miracles, this soap is definitely in the too pricey range. Looks like your wrist is feeling better. Glad to see that. Hav3 a great day!
Hey Stuart. I agree, it's not magical:) I do love the scent and it's quite a good soap. It's just not special and it needs to be for the price. The wrist is definitely getting better. It's not there but it's improving.
Great shave Chris!! $38 for a tub of soap? That’s pretty crazy, considering the competition out there at the top tier level(for me would be A&E K2e, and Løthur) and neither of those two soaps are near that price. I’ll just walk off shaking my head hahaha. Take care my brother, and see you tonight!
Yeah, $38 is gonna be a pass for me. I'm sure there are similar scents that are more reasonably priced. Today's shave: Hawk V3 "A" plate, HC&C bay rum (a free sampler), and Noble Otter Lonestar splash. I got kinda burned out on bay rum scents a while back, I liked this one though. It was a tad clove heavy, but I enjoyed it nonetheless (perhaps a scenting oil would help make it even better).
Chris...how does the scent compare to Stirling Satsuma? For me, the Stirling Satsuma is a world class orange scent, and the best of all the orange scented products I have used. Thanks.
I’m with you there. There is no way I’d buy a soap at that cost, I just can’t justify it when there are equity as good of soaps out there for a fraction of the cost.
Bought two Blood Oranges. One for family. Just sold mine. Nice essential oil scent but the performance was average in this new cream base. The F base is just ok in my use. Extremely overhyped brand. The EOS complex ingredient is a mystery as well. The price, including essential oils, is ridiculous.
@@stuartcollins9988 Taht's pretty much my conclusion as well. Good soap, not great. I'm not willing to pay this kind of money for essential oils. At 6oz I'd have been ok with it.

Awesome video Chris! Have you ever seen an artisan soap maker like this bring down their prices or is there enough demand for this tier of shaving soap? Also, what do you consider to be the best soap you've ever shaved with?
I've seen the lime version on sale before one time. I picked it up at TRC for $20-$25 I think. That was a much more palatable price. That one hung around on sale at TRC for a long time. Generally I think these sellout quick, as a high price makes people believe they are getting a miracle in a jar:)
Uh, no thanks. I will continue to support the artisans that provide excellent products at a fair price. Thanks for sharing! Hope your situation there is improving and you can head back home soon. Best
My goal is to generally do the same. I'll take a flyer once in a while like this but I feel a lot better when I support artisans who are providing good value.
Very nice shave Chris. That soap it's in the Martin de Candre price league and I would never purchase it. I have a hard time justifying a 6 dollar an ounce soap. Have a wonderful day.
Great video ! Yeah that price is ridiculous, I definitely won't be purchasing that. It's one of those prices where you buy it and you know they are taking advantage of you. Especially when you have soaps like ARKO that generate the best lathers in the industry. It's hard to top PAA, Stirling, barrister and mann.
Now that is ridiculous! Seriously, the hubris of an artisan to think their shaving soap commands that price. You were very kind throughout the shave. At least the razor was a nice one.
I did. Unless I say an item was sent to me, I bought it. When I am sent items I try to remember to tell you whether or not I'd buy it with my own money. That said, even if this had been sent to me I'd have said I think it's too pricey for what it is.
Yes. The triple milled offerings from Saponificio Varesino and Martin De Candre are good values. They will last orders of magnitude longer than this super soft soap.
