  • Previously in our animated historical documentary series on the easternmost Greek states, we have covered the history of the Greco-Bactrian Kingdom bit.ly/2RJpa5u and the war of the Heavenly Horses against the Han China bit.ly/2s5W5pK, but Bactria wasn't the only Greek state in the region, as they also managed to create a kingdom in India under the Euthydemid dynasty. Their centuries-long presence in the Indian subcontinent, and the cultural legacy they left behind leaves a fascinating story for history enthusiasts around the world to study for years to come

      Lol.
      we don't want to be called Arabs.
      Yes there are some people in Pakistan who originally were from Arabia but they are in very little number.
      I am from the north western mountainous part of Pakistan.
      I belong to the pushtun/afghan ethnic group.
      In the South Western Pakistan there Baloch ethnic people live.
      who are iranic people.
      Also in the South Western Pakistan there are hazara (Mongolians who settled here) ethnic people . So you see we have quite divers country.
      But what i originally meant here is that.
      Indus valley civilization belongs to the Punjabis and Sindhis people.
      Punjabi and Sindhi people live in Pakistan.
      That Indus valley civilization is based in modern day Pakistan.
      Not the modern day Republic of so called india!
      Even the Indus River after which that civilization was named is in modern day Pakistan not in Republic of india.
      The original Indians are the people of Pakistan not the so called fake Indians!
      I can go on and on over this topic but I think i don't need to because i am sure you understand what i mean.

      Panos, Alexander was extremely brutal. His deeds in India are barf inducing. No reasonable person should respect such a monster. He was a drunkard, destroyed villages etc etc. He should not have been in India in the first place. Why ? Coz Indians had nothing against him or Greeks, in general.
      You can't praise an imperialist like him with the flawed argument 'Alexander himself showed respect to every civilization he encountered'. How did he encounter them in the first place ? Violence. That's obviously unjustifiable ...
      Also, we are talking about the Greeks of the BC era. Although I should not generalise them, I am quite sure that many Ancient Greeks were racists. Take Aristotle. He was clearly a racist. He believed that non Greeks deserve to be slaves. This is quite similar to the Greek idea of 'Every person who doesn't speak Greek is a barbarian'. Guess what ? Many Brahmans in India had the same mentality. Anyone who didn't speak Sanskrit was considered a barbarian. Even the word for barbarian is almost identical. Barbaros in Greek and Barbara in Sanskrit. After all, they are sister languages.
      You see, Buddha debunked racism. He debunked the mentality that many Greeks and Brahmans had. People like Buddha deserve respect, instead of Alexander, Ashoka etc etc.

      Just wanna add something important here. Eurocentric scholars barely talk about the Indian influences on Greece, both before and after Alexander. Thomas McEvilley was perhaps the first to do extensive research on this subject. India and Greece influenced each other. It's not just Greece that influenced India. It is quite likely that the Pre-Socratics were influenced by Upanishadic and Sramanic Philosophies. This is likely coz the Greeks were in contact with the Indians via the Persian Empire, way before Alexander. Post Alexander, it is likely that the Greeks were influenced by Buddhist Philosophy. Pyrrho lived in India for more than 18 Months. He learnt Indian Philosophy from the Gymnosophists. Buddha had already been dead before Alexander in India. So, either the Stoics or the Epicureans or both were influenced by Indian Philosophy via Pyrrho, who took Indian Philosophy back to Greece. Eurocentric scholars always try too hard to falsify the likelihood of external influences on Greek Philosophy. The Ancient Greeks themselves often gave credit to others, like Egyptians and Indians. Modern day scholars are biased. Diogenes Laertus mentioned that Pyrrho's Equanimity came from India. So, you see, we should come out of this Eurocentric bubble and be honest. Philosophy did NOT begin in Greece and the Greeks did NOT invent it independently. That much is obvious ...

    Nitpicking here, but "Alkidemos" is a compound word, from "alki", meaning strength in combat, and "demos", meaning people, so I am surprised you have chosen to interpret "Athena Alkidemos" as Athena the Savior; I believe something like Athena the Strength of the People conveys the sentiment more accurately. At any rate, savior would be "soter" and, in fact, this exact word features in the inscription on the obverse of the same coin at 9:50, which reads ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΣΩΤΗΡΟΣ ΜΕΝΑΝΔΡΟΥ, meaning "of King Menander the Savior". Obviously you are also aware of the fact that the epithet "Soter/Savior" was claimed by many Hellenistic rulers as well (Ptolemy I, Antiochos I, Diodotos I, Demetrios I of the Seleucids etc), which is another reason why translating "alkidemos" as the same thing seems weird.

      and Σωτήρ

      @Criminology 101 Ehh NO. RE-READ: "Talking about inferiority complex. What about Indians seeing themselves as a inferior race? And the many levels of racism and the hostility against women? You should first go to Greece before judging. Greeks are incredibly warm and hospitable people and if you're a good enough soul, they will give incredible warmth to anyone."
      Which implies I addressed the person who told a lie. Instead since I have actually been there researched the world and India plentifully, and have on personal accounts numerous of things experienced which can conclude the matter at hand. Many Indians live in extreme poverty. Fact. hundreds of millions of Indians cannot read or write. Fact. Indians have a caste system. Fact. Many millions of Indians have to fight for even the most basic things among each other. Fact. HENCE the cultural phenomenon of racism of Indians among each other. "I am better, you are shit". "I am rich you are poor" "I am good looking, you are ugly".
      This plays an important role in Indian society as nothing is for granted. Most homes still live of dung piles and the level of racism among each other is immense also do to again the caste system. Jealousy among Indian men is also frequent on a cultural level on a level you don't see anywhere else. Am I thus proving this guys points? NO. I am proving MY point. As I have not addressed anyone racially. I have simply stated world wide facts.

    • @Ptolemy336VV
      @Ptolemy336VV Před 5 lety +5

      @Heat Ray Whatever you say, my point is correct. The initial comment is about respect. Then the person replying to it talks about inferiority complex in such a way that it peeked my curiosity while knowing fully well the problems within the state of India. And merely stating the facts does not make me a racist nor a hater. I have no dislike against India, and nor am I Greek. 2 inaccuracies by prejudice people here. So again. How can you dislike it when I'm merely stating facts. There are entire essays and university studies dedicated to racism and the caste system within India which stimulates inferiority/superiority. So no. My words are not some garbled nonsense as you like to trivialize it to, but actual facts. Now without insulting you back, have a nice day

    • @Ptolemy336VV
      @Ptolemy336VV Před 5 lety +5

      @Criminology 101 Again. I have stated world wide accepted facts. That doesn't make me a hater, nor generalizations. I mention that hundreds of millions are illiterate. That is based on statistics and it's not the entire nation. It's what it is a significant portion of the country. And then you're (which is what I meant with inferiority) trying to disdain European countries with inaccuracies and how a person cannot get into being a president. In the west anyone and anything can become a president, prime minister, queen, pop-star, or anything else. Even the king of the Netherlands has a news reader from Argentina as his wife and queen. But again. If that's how you roll, then that is fine. And let's not make it a comparison case between Europe and India with the arguments that you where trying to give for all the respectful reasons out there one could give.

    HI, I am from India and love the videos you have made. My request is to make more videos about the political and military history of the Indian subcontinent on a timeline since there are so many empires and kingdoms. Such a visual representation as an animated video would be very useful to get a grasp of the complexities of Indian political & military history and would be easier to teach school children in India since many of them have only their school textbooks to learn about the history which I believe are inadequate, probably biased by current political ideology as well as failing to give a proper picture of the syncretism of various cultures, religions, traditions and races that have achieved peaceful living and strong empires through the centuries. Many of the current conflicts in the Indian subcontinent can be resolved if future citizens are given a proper understanding of their own history.
