  • Sorry about the static, I could use some advice on how to manage that. This video is the first of this new style of filming where I'm trying to have more improvisation rather that writing a script before. This video Didn't turn out as well as I'd like, but, hopefully I can figure out how to do better with later videos. For the Dell I did remove the CMOS battery which I plan to replace later.

    I actually prefer the older Dell Latitude series to ThinkPads. In many cases the build quality is actually better, the designs are more desirable, and they're sometimes easier to service. Also as someone else mentioned, Dell doesn't blacklist/whitelist components... at least not to the notorious extent of IBM/Lenovo.

      I saw this and just upgraded it to a spare Intel 7260 I bought for a thinkpad, but didn't work because of the white list. It works great on the dell. Before I was getting 60mbps, now I'm getting 260mbps. Awesome!

      @@Duraputer Ah yeah that makes sense, that's the good thing about Linux. Well I just looked at the spec sheet and it doesn't mention the 7260, so you found another thing as well as the 16 Gb RAM that is officially unsupported. These Dells are pretty flexible!

      It's a shame neither of them are as well built. Dell gave up on build quality at best by the 7x90 series. I have a 5420 and 7420 and both of them have paint chipping problems and feel nowhere near as nice as my 7290

    😮😮😮 I am surpised by some things on this laptop.
    1. 16 gb ram support în 2010. Thats mindblowing since I know someone with hp probook 6540b which only supports 8 gb ram
    2. 1 cove gets acest to any part you want to replace on this laptop. Old laptop wins!!!!!!

    Dell isn't as popular, but their business class machines are *very* Thinkpad-ish. Possibly more so than real Thinkpads, at times. Cheaper, too, as the Thinkpad cult sorta kinda keeps prices up, whereas sometimes a Dell machine with similar specs is just cheaper due to lower demand. In theory though the Dell machines are just as common as the Thinkpads, so if Lenovo continues making less than ideal machines more people might jump ship. Hopefully Dell notices and doesn't decide to start sucking too.

    • @DimNussens
      @DimNussens Před 5 měsíci

      Also, I preferred your delivery in this video as compared to your prior narrations. There's just a *feeling* when someone's reading from a script, and I would prefer the natural hiccups of an unscripted delivery over that. Makes it feel like you're talking with a friend about something you find cool, rather than trying to give a lecture to a room full of people.
      You'll get more natural as you keep going, you're doing excellent!

    • @FlyboyHelosim
      @FlyboyHelosim Před 5 měsíci +1

      If Dell does start to 'suck' it won't matter because this era of business laptop is long gone. Modern Dell, just as modern Lenovo, are nothing like the older laptops.

      dell unfortunately killed the pointing stick, so the thinkpad cult will never jump ship

    For $87 you've still got a pretty capable machine - I'd say the quad core CPU, 16GB RAM, and inexpensive SSD are certainly worth it. Depending on the health of the old battery, a replacement may also have been worthwhile if the old battery didn't have much life left in it.
    They certainly don't make machines like this nowadays, which is a shame, and it's great to see the $10 per laptop "job lot" that you purchased, be put to good use!

    One small thing I like about the Dell is that it has a UEFI rather than a legacy BIOS. And with the extra upgradability, it's a great competitor to the ThinkPad T410

      I'm not sure, I'm using obs to record with a 1080p cam Instead of my phone. The raw footage is 1080p, and I have obs set to 1080p, so I'm not sure. I think I'll need to go back to using my phone until I can figure it out.

    Great video and a cool tidbit about the 1st gen Core i7 Quad-core processors. I always wondered why 16GB wouldn't work in my e6410 with a dual-core i7. I may have to try the 32GB loadout on my Precision m6500.
    FYI, up until around the 8th gen, you can draw a rough equivalence between a ThinkPad T4x0 and Latitude 364x0 where 'x' is the generation (same for the T5x0 and E65x0). Many of the same upgrades will work on both, although Dell did limit some things on the older e-series Latitude. For instance, the E6440 is the first model to support an mSATA SSD in the WWAN slot (which apparently the ThinkPad will support as far back as the T420). Similarly, upgrading from an HD to HD+ screen on the Latitude may require replacing the screen cable as well (single vs. dual channel LVDS). On the upside, the Latitude does not have hardware whitelists, so WiFi card replacement is trivial.

      Just curious, does your e6410 have the ExpressCard slot or the Cardbus (PCMCIA) slot. Apparently, they could be ordered with either but can't be upgraded without switching the motherboard. The bigger models from that generation (e.g., Precision m6500 came with both slots).

    I used to do my study about 5 years ago on a Dell E6420, just with a 2nd gen i5 and 8GB of RAM. I debated on whether I'd keep it or sell it as parts, ultimately decided I'm keeping it as a spare machine that I'll upgrade to a quad core i7 (like your ThinkPad T420) and I'll replace the battery, maybe chuck 16GB of RAM in if I feel like it later. I completely agree that these Dell machines are nothing to be scoffed at, they are extremely modular and Linux Mint/LMDE is still so usable on them.

    That's wicked cool about the quad core upgrade, I wish the ThinkPad T410 could do that but it doesn't have the microcodes in the BIOS or there is some other incompatibility. whereas some of the T510 are able to support the swap since they share BIOS with the W510. A lot of the things people like about older ThinkPads were presented in other business brands as well, things like tanky construction and modularity, such as this Dell.
