Great review of the Ruger Security-380. I’ve been looking at reviews of this pistol for a few months now. Most reviewers have no complaints about it other than the caliber. 380 has a long hate-following by 9mm snobs who overlook the improvements in ammunition recently. So, I tend to agree with your more informed and objective views regarding the .380 these days.
I’ve owned revolvers and pistols of various calibers, my old Beretta 92F being a lifelong favorite. But I’d never carry that monster around and I was looking for a small pocket gun, So I picked up the Ruger LCP2 in .380. Small, light, and reliable, just no fun to shoot at the range. Accurate enough at 7 yards but very snappy as you pointed out. So it’s a pocket gun as it’s meant to be. I had one major problem with it as the extractor blew off of it within the first 75 rounds. But knowing Ruger’s impeccable customer service record, I called them. Based on the serial number, the service tech suspected I had the original slide that was prone to this problem and I sent it in for warranty work. Within 10 days I received the pistol back with the newer slide and barrel and a very detailed explanation of the difference in the retaining pin location and function on the new slide. 200 rounds later, not a single issue with it.
A long time Ruger revolver fan, I became a new Ruger pistol fan as well. Mostly for the price but more for their customer service.
I picked up a Ruger Max-9 pro (without safety) and it’s been flawless. Great fiber optic/tritium front sight but I really wanted to try a red dot and it was cut perfectly for the Holosun 407k so I installed it. I also replaced the trigger with a Galloway Precision short stroke trigger and now it’s a very accurate and fun range gun. But not because I customized it, but because I practiced with it for a couple thousand rounds. I’m a firm believer that a gun’s accuracy mostly depends on how much time the shooter spends shooting it.
The gun doesn’t become more accurate with time, the shooter does.
So now I’m seriously considering the Ruger Security 380 since it’s not a tiny mouse-gun and should prove to be very fun and accurate at the range. Plus it looks really cool. And doesn’t cost a fortune.
Sorry for the long rant and thanks for the great review and defense of the newer .380 caliber being much better than it once was.
Edit: First time viewer of your channel and now a subscriber. Thanks again.

  • @44Mag

I bought one of these recently, and I have to say it is a great value. You get a lot of features for the $300 retail price. I am having a holster made for it this Saturday (Renaissance Firearms - best quality kydex holsters I have found.) and it will be my primary EDC now.
As I get older and the arthritis has gotten worse in my hands, I find the .380 to be the ideal caliber, and the Security 380 to be the ideal gun. (I have had an LCP for many years and bought the LCP Max recently as well. It will still be my pocket carry go-to.)
The Security 380 has a really lite rack, and has plenty of accuracy. (At 7 yards, it is easy to keep everything inside a 3"-4" circle at rapid fire. - No, it is not a bullseye gun, but it certainly has very good combat accuracy.)
As for the .380 caliber, it has 10" or more (usually 11-13 inches) penetration and rarely any less than 10", regardless of the ammo brand.
This slightly lower penetration gives somewhat reduced odds of over-penetration of the round and hitting a bystander.
Lots of internet warriors cast shade on the .380 for not expanding like a 9mm does.... If you measure the fired rounds, the expanded 9mm only measure (on average) 1/8" larger than the .380. (sometimes 3/16", but rarely more)
However, with the reduced recoil, most folks can shoot the .380 more accurately and faster than a 9mm. At the end of the day, being able to place accurate hits on target at higher speeds is WAY more important than that extra 3/16" expansion, or that extra 2" of penetration.

@@fmgpubs, I think you’re right about that. I’ve been recommended to and subscribed to lots of firearms channels for years but this is the first time I’ve seen your channel in my recommendations. In one viewing I subscribed and I’ve found it very well done and straight forward, where I’ve unsubscribed to others that were just too radical and tactical, offering nothing of any value other than doomsday scenarios and prepper crap. (Kids usually) I’m 60 years old and have owned guns for decades. From a generation of gun safety, technical knowledge, marksmanship, and not pretending to be something we weren’t. We didn’t play dress-up or overweight soldier-boy, we were generally quiet about our passion for firearms and respectful. Now there’s this bunch of wannabe militias complaining that our 2nd amendment is under attack and they don’t know why. It might have something to do with all the spooky Kevlar gear and helmets and marching like Nazis on steroids, but who knows? Dumb kids are ruining it for all of us.
So I like your channel for just being normal and I don’t know why CZcams would limit your exposure and support the types who we’d never even allow on our range our in our gun clubs. That’s just wrong, man.

@@fmgpubs, Thank you back, Roy. I also miss the good ol’ days before the NRA got so corrupt and went full-on tactical for nothing but money, not caring about the harm they were doing. I canceled my membership years ago because of that.
Back in the early 80’s, my friend bought a Colt AR-15 (the only ones available at the time), and we took it to the rifle range. Everyone else had hunting rifles or an older military rifle. The AR in .223 was really fun to shoot and very accurate at 300 yards with a scope and bipod.
But it was expensive to shoot and more of a collectors item than anything else, so my friend kept it in pristine condition and we didn’t shoot it anymore. We went with our pistols to the range not wanting to draw undo attention, though my Beretta 92F was a real head-turner.
But all in good fun and in more innocent times. Decades later, school-shootings, mass-shootings, and AR-15s made by every manufacturer now, and in the hands of lunatics, my friend couldn’t stomach owning an AR anymore and sold it. I agreed it wasn’t something I’d want to be associated with either anymore but that’s because we were socially aware of its new reputation and all the fun had been drained out of it by morons. Besides, he had much nicer and more expensive hunting rifles that didn’t look like war machines and never would.
That’s not to say that AR’s are bad and lots of good and responsible shooters own them, but they aren’t advertising them and joining the militia psycho gangs either. Our generation knows that our 2nd. Amendment is every bit as fragile as the other Amendments and it’s best to not push our luck by being too noisy about them. Funny the irony of people fighting hardest for our 2nd. Amendment are also fighting for a dictatorship and abolishment of the Constitution entirely. Do they think the 2nd. Amendment will be the only one preserved in a dictatorship? Can they name a dictatorship that allows the populace to own guns at all? Do they think they’ll be invited into the club?
Nope, they’re being used and distracted by the color of M&Ms so they won’t even realize that when their dream comes true, they be cast aside and restricted from even whining about it.
Luckily, they’re the tiny and loud minority and we, the majority, the REAL Americans and patriots won’t allow this silliness to continue.
I didn’t want this to turn political but it unfortunately has. Not sure if I’ll even be alive to see if America survives this cold war against democracy but I have a feeling we will. Meanwhile, I’ll just keep on being normal and trying to stay in the 10-ring for fun.

@@fmgpubs I am an older arthritic shooter who has been moving down in calibers over time and most of my 9's aren't much fun racking anymore and have a S&W Shield 380 EZ which is so smooth and easy to load, rack and shoot. The only problem I have is that it is limited to 8 +1 while this Ruger comes in at about the same size with a lite racking system and a 15 + 1 capacity.
As always I am again wrestling with the issue of not really needing another gun, but also wanting another one. Since you aren't one of those "commercial" reviewers who get an evaluation gun sent to them from the manufacturer and they always seem to work splendidly because they were gone through completely before being sent out to ensure they'd be troublefree and garner a rave review. At the same time there may be a number of folks who bought theirs off the shelf and are reporting problems.
I prefer reading reviews from folks who bought one off the shelf and don't have a vested interest in providing a favorable review. Seems honesty is in short supply these days. Appreciate that you keep it simple and straight to the point and say what you think about something.

I saw a video by Po' Boy where he shot the fmj .380 thru a metal ammo case, a pineapple, a coconut and a car door. I find the .380 easy to place headshots so even the fmj will be deadly. Plus you really do not need to go 12 inches to hit the heart from the front. Ruger makes simply good guns be it a revolver or a semi auto. I trained along with my three sons, on a Ruger GP100 .357 Magnum. We shot the plain old .38 Special, 130 grain fmj. We learned trigger control and found there was the least amount of recoil we ever had from any handgun used for defensive purposes.

They shipped you up to mar guys up here and it felt really good in my hand and then I went and bought hog beavertail grips and slid them on there and they just made it three times better than again. You got to check out the hogue slip on beavertail grips. If you bought that one, you might not like it. I like a little more. I got a big hands draw like a little something a little more to grab onto even thickness. And I really like the whole grips that you slide on a little hard to get on. Tanya, unlike the tiny .380 autos, this one has a slide that’s easy to run. Also, the little guns are harder to shoot well, they have snappy recoil and are often hard to grip well. The Ruger has been 100 percent reliable and has a pretty darn good trigger. It’s small enough to carry in a medium sized purse and with the right holster, you could easily hip carry it. I also have the S&W EZ380 and haven’t found the grip safety to ever be an issue. It functions fine regardless of how I happen to grip the gun. I have smallish hands too. The Security 380 I purchased is non functional out of the box. The trigger will not operate the hammer.
When the slide is removed then the trigger will operate the hammer. Conclusion, the slot in the slide that the disconnecter has to raise into was not milled properly. The disconnector is held down by the slide thus the trigger will not operate the hammer.

      @charlesshirk8699 Před rokem

Thank you for the reply. I do have other firearms and I am familiar with ones that will not fire without a magazine.
The problem has to do with the slide and disconnector.
When the slide is removed the trigger will operate the hammer.
In a normally operating firearm when the slide is in the closed position there is a slot for the disconnector tab to raise into. If the slide is not in battery the disconnector tab is held down by the slide so the gun cannot fire out of battery. The slide on this gun is holding the disconnector down even when the slide is in battery. There is a slot on the slide. Either the slot was not cut high enough or there is something wrong with the height of the disconnector tab.

Good video and fair review. Why would someone want .380 over 9mm? Here is why I ask this question. Recoil is the same. .380 ammo is more expensive. Performance is similar but in some guns, the .380 is even snappier.

    • @fmgpubs
      @fmgpubs  Před rokem +3

Rotadyma, the recoil of the .380 is milder and one of the more important things is the fact the slide is much easier to manipulate. These guns won’t be used for 1,000 round classes, and most will just buy a box or two, shoot it to make sure it runs, then carry or stow it for an emergency. I don’t agree with that, but it’s reality. Try one of these in .380 and you’ll see the huge difference in manipulation and recoil. Roy
