I recently got married, the wedding photographer was an “award winning” event photographer here in the Philippines. Being an experienced non professional I was able to critique their work very specifically, long story short their pics were awful. Their only argument was I wasn’t a pro photographer, so what would I know.
Thing is (and I’m sure this applies to a lot of people) I could be a pro if I wanted (I’ve been offered work by a few photographers) but I earn a steady and good income elsewhere.
In my experience pro photographers are not necessarily better than amateur, however words like hobbyist/enthusiast are often used in a derogatory fashion especially on CZcams, for example “this camera/lens isn’t great but it’s okay for hobbyists/enthusiasts” so maybe some people don’t like those terms even though they are accurate and nothing to be ashamed of
As an amateur, I'll be real honest. I've never known a hobby with such an unfriendly bunch of ppl who share the same hobby/passion.
The amount of times I walk by someone with a DSLR/Mirrorless photographing nature like I do, and can't even share a nod..
..any other hobby, and ppl seem to get excited to share their hobby and passion.
Photography, it seems more about what gear you have, what brand you have, than the actual passion of photography.
I have to say I agree! The togs I've tried to talk to at ANY Motocross event I cover act like I'm trying steal their wife! It's a shame that all the friendly & likemined photographers seem to be here on the interweb & live on the other side of the planet 😂

It's actually interesting tho, because I have heard that same thing before but actually tied to a specific income amount. In Australia it was the governing body AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photographers) that set a certain yearly amount, and if you failed to reach that figure you were not considered professional (you actually had to provide proof of income). Which I always thought was a bit mean, because plenty award winning professional shots can be taken from enthusiasts who have better earning careers than choosing photography full time 🤔...
Anyway, the AIPP went bust and no longer exists, we have no governing body for professional photography here in Aus, it's the wild west now!! Snake oil here we go!! 😆
Biggest thing that irks me is that photographers say your equipment doesn't matter, but everything depreciates hard.
If equipment didnt matter, it would be like music production where you don't get shafted for holding onto an old synth.

I do photography for relaxation I started photography because of hiking in the outdoors and wanted to remembe the beauty of nature .Who doesn't want sharp pictures I've never heard a person say they want burly out of focus pictures. Photography is a subject art form and there will always be differences of opinion

So, while not disagreeing with you, i'll give three alt-takes on the points you raised:
Professional. So we have one definition and it is probably a widely accepted one. I'd argue that it is not the only one. One of the winningest coaches in sport at the highest level wrote in his autobiography: 'The difference between the Professional and the Amateur is that the Professional is dedicated to the total eradication of error. It has nothing whatsoever to do with money.' That's very much how i see things where money is not the measure of everything, especially quality.
Sharp lenses mattering. I'd argue that it totally depends on the style of photography a photographer produces. There are a lot of working photographers, and especially in video, shooting on vintage glass. In still photography, there are those who shoot (and sell) primarily in ICM, Impressionist and Pictorialist styles. Sharpness is less important (or irrelevant) to being successful in these sub-genres. Were sharpness the alpha and omega of making a crust in photography, the only people working would be shooting $20k+ rigs.
It's not the camera, it's the photographer. I think that's a hang-over from the film era where glass quality was important but camera's were really just boxes for capturing photons on film stock that everyone had access to. Digital introduced the real Arm's Race in camera's, where the camera's ever-increasing capabilities have enabled even poorly skilled photographers to nail one killer image using Pre-capture and a 50fps burst (etc). And the contemporary editing can create anything out of a pig's ear.

Thanks Lee. Title is a bit over the top. I have many good photography friends both "professional" and "amateur". I only ever met one so called professional photographer who I would say was worst than your title. A couple of days before a wedding he rang up my bride and said he was now doing the job because "Geoff" had pulled out.I confronted him and in asking around I found he had a bad reputation in photography circles already and had falling foul of the regulatory body here in Australia.I did do the wedding.
To be an amateur originally meant to be la lover of something. So it’s not necessarily a lesser thing than being a professional.
And the thing about sharpness, yes and no. Because like... there's sharpness and then there's sharpness and then there's blunt. I think a lot of my Fuji lenses are very sharp, especially in areas I don't care that much about. Why I need a f1.2 lens sharp in the corners from the get go (for a marketed portrait lens) is beyond me. Had they compromised a little maybe they coulda had a smaller lighter lens that afforded Linear Motor autofocus (arguably way more important than sharp corners wide open)!!! But I don't have much choice, so I have a super sharp lens...
And then there are crud lenses, where the sharpness is non existent and that's just called a bad lens 🤣
So from my experience I need a lens that is sharp enough, but doesn't need to be a razor sharp! I actually find it funny that portrait lenses are designed with such a massive emphasis on sharpness, yet most post processing tools are tackling said sharpness on 90% of the face (maybe the eyes are left alone and appreciated sharp). When I use a lens that is average for sharpness I tend to need less post processing work to sell the shot. The kind of people that walk this earth that benefit from super sharp portrait glass are 0.99% of the beautiful people (and average joe bloggs doesn't stand a chance at photographing them 😅).
But what if it IS my main occupation but I am just BAD at it and don't make much money? 😆🤑 Can I still call myself pro when I make $15k/yr? heheh
yep sure can by definition. Also the kids at theme parks taking pics in full auto to sell to the tourist are technically professional photographers. Let that sink in. lol

@leehaze1 I think sometimes people use the word Professional in a context like "of the quality a person who does photography for a living" which, in a general sense, means "good work" (whatever the hell that means).
