    One of the greatest midfielders of his era. Certainly one of my favourite midfielders of all time. A complete package as a midfielder and a coach’s dream. His performances in the 98 CL final and in the 2000 CL winning season deserve so much praise.
    I love these types of videos on great players that people don’t talk about such as Matthias Sammer or Michel Platini. Is there any forgotten greats you have in mind that you would like to cover one day?

    Redondo sounds a lot like Frenkie De Jong. A defensive midfielder who struggles with discipline, positioning, and aggression that DMs are usually renowned for but unbelievably comfortable playing under pressure. They both roam around the pitch too much to be a holding midfielder but can kind of single-handed control his teams possession play

      Hmm Guardiola is the most underrated out of the trio imo. Busquets hard to compare to Redondo because he’s more of a specialist CDM and tactically for me he’s the best out of the three as he’s so easy to coach and fit into a side. Could he do the lifting of a side like Redondo could? No... so Redondo more of a match winner but Busquets an easier piece to fit into a side.

      @PythagorasinBoots  Před rokem

      He's the only keeper who's been in the top 3 in the world for the past 5 years but never n1, sometimes n2. However that consistency between the sticks is something one would want in a dominant team and that alone puts him in the debate for best keeper of the past 5 years.
      His ball playing for internacional looked good and sometimes for Roma too but ever since he got robbed at king power stadium in his first season klopp seems to have made Alisson shy away from that part of his game.
      I feel like he always sinks if he's team is in the mire and gets dropped down too easily. his handling is the best in the world but rarely utilised because the CBs for pool usually head things away. Absolutely massive world cup coming up for him, I'd have him ahead of ederson.

    Always wanted to learn about Redondo so thank you for this video and effort put into it Pythagoras.
    How long does it take you to edit or make this videos?
    Hopefully you make a video about Roy Keane, Patrick Vieira and Claude Makélélé possibly a comparison because for someone young like me I didnt get the pleasure to watch neither since I only started watching football during the 2006 World Cup.
    I personally rate Vieira over Keane because I believe Vieira could play in any era and would be even more appreciated during modern era because he encompasses everything a B2B midfielder should be and would possibly became a goalscorer in this era sought of like Fede Valverde this season.
    Let me know what you think about the Comparison video of those Legendary Defensive Midfielders. Would be interesting since they are so different from one another even Makelele's IQ was so underrated.

    • @PythagorasinBoots
      @PythagorasinBoots  Před rokem +3

      Due to work commitment and kids it takes nearly a month or so to get the classic player videos done (so won’t be doing one for a while!)
      Keane was IMO the superior player to Viera who never quite did it in UCL and has a inferior record domestically too. Only at international level does Viera have a better resume and that is because he played for a vastly superior national squad which was fill to the brim with talent and Keane played for Ireland so not a fair comparison.
      Keane was used as a CB by Fergie in some games so he was a guy who could play multiple positions CB, RB and CDM and Box to Box. He has a wonderful ability to control play, positional awareness but can also be aggressive.
      Viera technically so talented, insane athleticism and super intelligent in his own right but it is mentally where I think Keane has a slight edge over him.
      Makelele was a better CDM than them both but was he better as a overall mid relative to their position and influence? I would argue no but he was an insane sitting midfielder and tactically more aware than the other two if comparing in pure CDM terms.

    Excellent job man. The context you provide especially in the retro analysis video is unmatched.
    That tier list though, would you mind explaining it in a video. Is it any different to the one you used for Denis Law?
    Some of the things I noted was the connection between Simeone and Bilardo and that late 60 Zubielda team. Seems like Simeone took that to this century.
    As for Pasarella and the rules thing, a lot of national teams have those. Since they are on international television and are representing millions, it is more of an image thing and it also gets rid of a lot of distractions. With the way you described him, he just seems to be a guy that would find any excuse not to represent their country or maybe saw it as beneath him, like a George Best.

      Denis Law one is outdated - I am still refining the model, Law would be an intergen so above 80 in the new model.
      Simeone is indeed the heir to that ideology of football and yes Passarella within his rights to ask for imo unnecessary especially when Argentina has so many long haired players - it’s just causing an issue for irrelevant reasons to football.

    Which players these days could mark Valderama and Haji? Don't see any midfield player these days able to control games besides Modric like Redondo, this sounds like he had barely any ability and was just a squad player

      Casemiro could probably do a job on them in his prime. But we are comparing Redondo to GOAT level cms and thus compared to rivals such as Rijkaard or Desailly for example - defensive game was not as good but on flip side he had talent with the ball someone like Desailly could only dream of.

    Cambiasso's career easily puts Redondo's one to shame...Redondo was great in his prime and all but he played in a weak era and his career essentially ended soon after his 31st birthday...he also wasn't able to score goals the way Cambiasso did. The bald Argie is a very underrated player really. While Redondo is one of the most overrated...let's not also forget that his international career amounts to nothing. Since the 90s, there have been 3 DM's way more important than Redondo for Argentina: Simeone, Cambiasso and Mascherano.

    Interesting how he's almost becoming overrated long after he retired. Was a great player in a different time, not quite as great as some folk make out today though.
