  • To honor women’s history month in the international year of the periodic table, today we wanted to share the story of two of chemistry’s most brilliant and bold women and their paths of elemental discovery -- because what they brought to the table changed the world as we know it.
++Note: There is a voice over error. The voice over states that by 1879 Marie Curie had concluded that Uranium and Thorium were the only known radioactive elements. This date should actually be 1897. Apologies for this error.

Curie should always be honored and remembered by future chemists, to recognize her ultimate sacrifice for the sake of scientific (and ultimately, safety) advancement. We know so much more about radiation and safety because of her.

Alice Ball is a really under appreciated African American woman chemist and was responsible for the best leprosy medicine at the time. It’s such a tragedy that her life ended so soon at the young 24. While there is certainly better medicine discovered for leprosy she still made a huge impact for thousands of people in the early 20th century. It’d be cool to see a video about her sometime!

I have a copy of the 1925 Noddack table and there is an error in your video table at 2:57 showing the element Radon (Rn) as the element Rhenium (Re) which is actually element 75, the one that Ida Noddack discovered.

Sure, I did the work to follow the path, but the reason the path was even open to me in the first place is because of the women who came before me.
Just like the reason I can vote now is because of the women who came before me, and fought for my right to vote. I don't need to fight for those rights, because the women before me already did. I see no reason not to give thanks and gratitude to them and their memory.

Are certain children left behind or set up for a lesser chance of advancement in science by learning the standard measurements instead of the widely accepted metric system?

At 32 I’m inspired by the magnitude of men who believe women are inferior at math and science to go back and try to understand the basics that I learned at a time when women were socialized and reinforced to believe we couldn’t do STEM as well as men. Thank you for this video!
