This is a great video. I just recently started running, and having never been a runner in my life, I made some mistakes that cost me. I started running in some three year old trainers that I had been abusing at the gym and around the farm. When my feet were killing me I splurged on some new shoes. My feet felt so great with my new shoes that I decided to do 30 second sprint sets, and pulled a calf muscle on the second sprint. I had to limp home with my dog for three miles. It was so ugly. After two weeks off for my calf to heal I just started running again this week, and I am much more careful. Beginning runners should just start with good shoes. Take is slow. Just jog for 20 minutes the first few times out. Feeling good one day? Take one or two 10 second sprints. Being enthusiastic is all well and good, but be a bit careful. Especially if you are entering running later in life as I am. Just don't be stupid, and everything will be much more productive and fun.

Xlnt video! At 64, I started jogging on a treadmill. Thought I was in ok shape, but it was UGLY….shin splints, foot pains, knee pains. Wasted 6 months B/4 studying and finding technique vids that helped a lot.. Then took the run to the streets and did a 5k…that SUCKED…street is so much harder. Thoroughly disappointed, but instead of quitting, it motivated me….studied more, bought better shoes, started strength training, ran smarter. Actually starting to like running now, after a year! Love sports, but never used to “just run” in my life….didn’t know it was so technical in many aspects!

I just started running 10k (worked it up from 5k). I spent the last year with a mixture of shin splints and what I thought were shin splints but was in fact the cleat on my left cycling shoe was out of alignment. So after 1 year I can run my 10k and feel recovered with no pain the next day. I beleive I have to start doing the short sprints now. My 10k time is 1hour 4 mins so I have lots of room for improvement. I run a lot more now as it's winter here in Scotland so I do less cycling or swimming. I found that 5k each day for 4 or 5 days then a rest day a few times increased (or changed my muscle type) , my muscles in my legs don't look any different , they are not bigger, but they sure are different. I managed my first Duathlon a couple of weeks ago (Tough Runner Edinburgh Gosford House , 5k , 25k, 5k).My first 10k road race Edinburgh next weekend and I hope to get my first sprint triathlon in spring next year !!! Great video.

I thought you would be interested to know that you have listeners from Ukraine among your subscribers 😂 thank you for the video. Unfortunately, I could not find such content in Ukrainian. Therefore, I have to expand my knowledge of English while watching the video. In August next year I will take part in 70.3 IMan in Poland. I have a small problem - it is very difficult to control my weight, because I like to eat. 😅 Maybe there are some recommendations in this topic? I will be glad to see a video on a similar topic. Have a nice day 🙃

It took me several years before I actually started to enjoy my running! Thankfully I stuck with it & it's been a great positive part of my life ever since. Great tips for everyone out there. One of the biggest things I've learnt is to enjoy running & don't put too much stress on yourself 🏃👍

I’m a flat footed runner but I still get neutral aka “universal” shoes then I decide from there if I want a “stability” shoe. What I found is that I don’t need them and they actually cause me more pain because some of them force my foot to run a certain way.

I think I fell into the trap of only run Z2. When I first started running, I just ran. Then when I heard about Z2 benefits I switched over immediately. This resulted in not being able to run continuously because I would constantly have to walk to keep my heart rate down. I kept this up all the way through my first 70.3 but I never got quicker. Then I heard about the 80/20 rule, and started to incorporate that, taking the first run after my rest day to be a sprint/walk 40/120(s).
Now after taking a forced break from training, I am returning and finding I lost all the gains I had made (oddly enough my mental strength is better). So this time I am trying to follow Don Finks Iron fit plan, but once again having to walk to stay in Z2, "according to the plan". I can run the prescribed times as outlined in the plan. So I will just run, and let the HR fall where it may. However my pace is NOT where I want it to be. A couple questions: When to work on desired pace, and when "should" I start Z2-80% "rule"?

I’m a bit older (56) and trying to train for a half ironman. I had been running relatively short distances for about 2 years. I was adding miles until I got plantar fasciitis. It’s been 10 weeks since I ran last and it’s killing me that I can’t continue to train right now. My point is please pay attention to the “no more than 10% rule and listen to your body. If something doesn’t seem right (especially with tendons, they take so long to heal) stop. It’s way better to take a week off than be forcibly sidelined for 3 months.

#8 run on trails or grass over pavement and roads. Much easier on the body and knees. Good tips regardless 👍

I've just got back into training after a few years off. The crazy thing is is my fast twich is still there (could be due to chasing after a 4 year old), but I can't maintain it for more than a minute. So essentially my long course run is a pretty sad jogging pace

  • @robstriathlontipsforbeginners

Make sure that your foot width is measured! I needed a wider shoe. Kept getting blisters past 12 km. No more problems now. Even doing a marathon.

2:35 i am almost flat footed, ended up getting custom orthotics; those fixed 90% of my knee pain.

Look up the Janda Short Foot exercise. Longterm it'll be wayy better, to work on the problem, instead of fighting the symptoms with custom orthotics.
