Directly from Sabaton's website: During the final battle of Berlin in 1945 the general of the 12th army, Walther Wenck realized that the end of the war was coming, and instead of trying to defeat the advancing Soviet forces as his orders were, he used his army to create an escape corridor out of Berlin. For such an act he would surely have been sentenced to death, but instead, he ended up being responsible for up to 250 000 people safely escaping the burning city of Berlin. For some this was a battle, for him this was a rescue operation.

The song is about the end of WWII in Europe, as the Russians close in on Berlin, everyone knew the war was long since lost.
Those with any sense to, or simply still able to do so; fled the dying Reich to surrender to the Western Allied armies, to escape the wrath of the Sovietsb whom they knew they would show them no mercy, soldier or civilian..
Those few remaining soldiers whose duty was to the People of Germany, not the Nazi Regime, took everyone they could and ran, escorting them to safety as their home burned behind them.

The song is about the actions of Nazi General Walther Wenck, "The Boy General", and the 12th Army he commanded during the fall of Berlin to the Soviet Red Army in the closing days of the 3rd Reich. Orders coming out of Hitler's Feurer Bunker ordered them to march head on into a concentrated Soviet push so the German leadership could get away, but Walther had other ideas. The 12th army set up a defensive cordon and began to evacuate the battered 9th army and any civilians who would go with them, opening up a corridor to the Elbe River, where the British, French, and American forces had stopped. Once across, they surrendered, deeming it better to surrender to the more levelheaded Americans than the bloodthirsty Russians.
On a related side note, "Nicht ein schlacht, ein rettungsaktion" translates roughly as "Not a Battle, a Bailout", which was certainly General Wenck's mentality of the operation.

      @peo4989 Před 4 lety +18

This particular song is about General Walther Wenck of the German 12th Army at the very end of WW2.
In defiance of Adolf Hitler's orders to retake Germany's Capital city of Berlin, Wenck would instead form a corridor to get Civilians, Wounded Soldiers, Red Cross personnel over the River Elbe to escape the Soviet Advance.
At the time the Soviets took it upon themselves to punish German Troops without trial, aswell as putting innocent civilians in danger by raping and stealing. Thus Wenck decided against gambling his soldier's lives on a pointless attack to save Berlin but to make one last ditch effort to save as many lives as possible.
He would rescue an estimated 250,000 civilians and another 25,000 Wounded Soldiers from certain death or forced labor. He was released from Allied Custody in 1946 after being fully confirmed of not comitting any War Crimes during WW2.
A story of the "Most Evil People" being Heroic.

More than two million german civilians died in WW2, and in the final stages of war the troops were old veterans or boys from the Hitler youth because so many soldiers had fallen (in total more than 5 million) at the fronts. Also many cities were bombarded by the allies (such as Berlin, Cologne, Dresden, Bremen, Hanover,....) so many civilians died there. You can still see some of the damage that was done. This is about the Fall of Berlin, which signaled the end of the Nazi regime (including Hitler's suicide). The Russians had surrounded the city, but the German 12th Army managed to keep a corridor open, though which the heavily-bruised 9th Army and 250,000 civilians could escape westward across the Elbe river and into the hands of the Allies, where they would surrender.

The 9th army transmiting in the clear for everyone civilan, 9th army and unfortunately soviet to hear, told people there Coordinates and offered there protection to escape to the elba and into western hands ( soviets and germans had a very bad relationship and anyone left in the city military or civilan was going to be in for rough treatment) the allies helped the 12th off load there passangers and sent them back accross until they got everyone they could . Then a few "Accidentally " misplaced western artillery barrages kept the soviets from advancing long enough for the last of the 12th to get accross and surrender.

The song is about the 12th army during 1945, opening up an corridor for the 9th army and civilians that were with/near their position. Story goes, ever since Hitler finally was told that army group “Steiner” wasn’t able to Mount an offensive counter attack to save Berlin, the 12th army was suppose to take up that task and save Berlin. General Walther Wench said “It’s no longer about Berlin, it’s no longer about the Reich” so he disobeyed orders and opened up a corridor against the Russians who were massing a counter offensive to close the corridor.

The song is about a specific portion of the Battle of Halbe (Part of the Battle of Berlin) - elements of the 35th Grenadiers and 21st Panzer divisions (remnants of the 9th and 12th armies) were able to break out of a Soviet encirclement, preferring to surrender to the US 9th army rather than the Soviets, same for the civilians who followed them through.
About 15000 Germans died holding the corridor over the course of ~14 days.

The 12th army was given the order by Nazi high command at the end of World War II to invade Berlin to save it; similar orders was given to the 9th army, however Berlin was currently under attack by the red army, a full strength red army, an unstoppable red army. The head of the 12th army ignored his orders and coordinated with what remained of the 9th army Which had been severely mauled by the red army, In order to open a corridor which ultimately allowed the evacuation of half a million German civilians and all surviving members of there combined armies, in the dying days of World War II. It is said that the 12ths general and his commanders were the last across the Elbe river to enter safety; to surrender to the western Allied forces.
However due to a deal struck by the Allies many of the officers of the 12th and the 9th armies were due to be turned over to the Russians; the only exceptions were if they had committed warcrimes in that case they were turned over to be judged at Nuremberg. There was a large spate of suicides among those to be turned over to Russia. For obvious reasons

Basically this is about the 12th german army under General Walther Wenck who held ground against western allied front. He recieved orders from the Führer HQ in Berlin to amass a counter attack with Steiner Panzergruppe north of Berlinand 9th Army that was trapped east of Berlin. The counterattack was to secure and hold Berlin then under orders from Hitler drive the Russians in a blitzkrieg back.....lol. Walther Wenck however saw the picture clear as day. So he disobeyed the order and only attacked and held Berlin for so long that the civilians and 9th army could retreat in their corridor evading certain death for soldiers and being raped for civilians. Sovjet forces were relentless against german civilians. Rapings and pillaging were standard. The plan was to hold the corridor against Sovjet panzer armies closing around Berlin long enough for as many civiians and remaining german soldiers as possible to escape certain death and surrender to american forces across the Elbe river. American forces however did not at first accept their surrender afraid to anger Sovjet commanders. However they could not ultimately stop the thousands of refugees seeking help while the german remaining forces did all they could to hold Sovjet advance. Ultimately many german soldier could get across and surrender.

The 12th wermacht army held open a corridor for the Wermacht 9th army which was almost encircled by the Soviets to escape east to cross to the eastern shore of the Elbe river with as many civilians as they could in defiance of Hitlers orders which were obviously and completely unrealistic the eastern shore was held by the US Army although under orders to not except the surrender of escaping german troops because of an agreement with the Stalin we did anyway there is a Patton story that goes with this and it was in the middle of this exfil that hitler (intentionally not capitalized) offed himself.

The German army committed horrendous atrocities against the Soviet civilians. 26 million died from june 1941 till the end of the war. The soviet army repaid the Germans rape from rape murder for murder when they crossed the Elbe into Germany proper. Some like Walther Wenck wanted to safe guard the civilians from this angry horde. It did not work but they tried. Just as an aside the French army raped and murdered their way from the Black forest to Stuttgart. The french was occupied from June of 1940 till august 1944. They were very angry. Eisenhower shifted Pattons 3rd army to take control and safeguard the civilians from the french army.
