    It's ZELDA MONTH over on PeanutButterGamer's channel, which means we're overdue for a deep look into the ABSURDITY of Zelda items. And I decided to tackle what I think is probably MY FAVORITE video game currency -- the RUPEE. Who wouldn't want enormous gemstones as their item of trade? But did you know you can actually OWN YOUR OWN Zelda rupee? It's true! And the true value of one Zelda rupee will BLOW YOU AWAY!
    A lot of you have been asking about the Zelda video we used at 10:26. For those of you interested in Racing for Rupees, you can check out the full video here. ►► bit.ly/1KW05xz

    I'm waiting for you to tackle Undertale, MatPat.
    There's tons of unanswered questions about the game that we want answers for, and a lot of fan theories are spreading accross the internet.
    For example:
    - Who really IS Chara?
    - Who were the other 6 fallen children?
    - How can Frisk have determination, but not the other children?
    - Why is THE PLAYER the first fallen child? (Assuming you used your real name like I did.)
    - AND WHY DOES TORIEL'S EYES TURN RED AT SPECIFIC MOMENTS????
    And this is just me scratching the surface. I haven't even mentioned Gaster yet. There's tons of unanswered questions and a ton of things MatPat could tackle about the game. So please don't insult people when they want MatPat to make an episode about Undertale. Our opinion is just as important as your's.
    Btw. We have already had a bunch of episodes about Nintendo characters already. Why not another indie game for once, instead of these triple A titles over and over again?
    And by the way. Everyone should read what my cousin wrote because no one ever talks about this:
    "I never see anyone talk about it but Chara not being inherently evil has canonical proof - they redeem themself in the Pacifist, No Reset timeline.
    If you boot up up the game after Frisk has left the underground, Flowey asks Chara to not Reset because "everyone is happy". Again: Chara. Not Frisk. Frisk has already left the underground. Only Chara (& you, the player) remain, and it's only you who can reset.
    If you decide not to reset, that in extension means Chara themself decides to let everyone go & live their lives - even if that means they'll have to be stuck in the underground alone, forever (& you, the player, choose to never replay the game). Again, Chara has the power to reset. They can bring everyone back. But they don't. And if that's not redemption, I don't know what is."
    Think about that for a second.

    I actually want to do a Theory about the comparative values of different game currencies (Mushroom coins, Rings, Gil, Bolts, Rupees, and Pokéyen). The answer will be based in economics rather than composition, since we can’t tell what they’re made, or their “real” size, since the size is a matter of convenience to the player, rather than realistic.

      1,000 subs with no videos - I tend to think of them as Yen, both because that was the symbol used in Red/Green, because there are no decimals as there are with dollars, because the prices seem a lot more reasonable when you think of them as yen ($2.65 is a bit more reasonable for a soda than $300), and the economic system behaves like yen, for example with the taxis in Kalos, which start at P710, the same as the ¥710 that is the standard starting fare for taxis in Japan.

    • @subswithnovideos-ef6ck
      @subswithnovideos-ef6ck Před 5 lety +4

      You're right there, but they're still referred to as Pokédollars, no matter what real life currency they are most similar to or based on. Even the Japanese name "ポケドル" is just a transliteration of Pokédollar. And the Yen symbol was never used, every game has used a P with two crosses through it, the Pokédollar symbol.

    while all of this is fairly interesting. We can't apply the value of rubies and sapphires from our world to the zelda world. We do not know how common or uncommon these stones are in the zelda universe, but seeing how many there are in this world and that they are used as a currency, they probably have much much less value than the stones in our world. I think they are comparable in rarity and value as the material we humans make coins. Tin, Iron, Copper and whatnot.

    • @Kurzidan
      @Kurzidan Před 8 lety +1

      +ShiniOokami No, He's not absolutely right.
      Because plottwist.
      the reason Zelda's Family is always Royalty and in power is because their lineage possesses the Power that Link does, The ability to produce these rupees from practically nothing, Smash a pot, rupees, cut the grass with a sword, rupees
      And because Link is Link, he has the power to do it as well.
      But nobody else in their universe does, so its not that they're found everywhere....
      Or Only Link Possesses the Ability, being the Chosen Hero.
      It seems odd that
      I don't think any normal person can or even is supposed to just afford the things that you typically spend all your rupees on, once you start getting into the big items, they all look Royal or of importance.
      And nobody wants you to own bombs, what are you, a terrorist?
      Ever read a Manga called "The Gamer".. I'd say Link is like that. He kills something, break something, etc, he gets exp and money for it, but normally, If other people were to "kill"/fight the same thing, they might get "stronger" like a normal person, But they wouldn't get money/items like him... Things that would normally be extremely impossible or rare, are uncommon or even common, abundantly so, for him.
      Or.
      You could be right and they could be worthless. But hey. That would make the chosen hero and/or Hylia/Her mortal incarnations, that much less powerful, to not have it as a special ability.
      And what would be the fun in that?

I'll just say it's very story and character driven. stay away from its community, it is FULL of Spoilers and people who think you have to play their way or not at all.

    Another awesome video! I love your more scientific ones. Although, I'm sure the size of rupees, especially in Ocarina of Time, are visually exaggerated to make them easier to spot for players. Similar to how many chibi-style games like Harvest Moon, have basically every single item greatly enlarged when held by the player character. This isn't to show that, for example, a carrot is twice the size of your body and you can somehow magically eat it a bunch of them, but its actually just the game artists means of depicting a carrot in your hand, if they made it life-size then you would be holding a 2 pixel orange thing, but by greatly exaggerating its size of the carrot, the player can figure out what they are looking at easily. I'm sure its a similar principle with the rupee's, if they made them actual-size, no one would be able to find them, especially in the earlier games. So the artists greatly exaggerate their size for some gameplay simplification. Though if rupee's are indeed that massive then your math is indeed correct. This is just another thing to think about. ;)

    Hmm... Well, what about glass? They can be colored and give off a shine. Heck, they can be turned into mirrors. Glass is made from sand. Sand forms due to weathering, which occurs pretty much everywhere. Sapphires, however, are igneous. That means that they can only form from molten lava. Unless Death Mountain can create an unlimited amount of sapphires and that's where rupee production comes from, I doubt that sapphires are more abundant than sand in the Zelda Universe.
    Also, look at the shooting gallery. Rupees shatter. That wouldn't happen if it were made of the second hardest mineral on Earth.
    Here's an example of glass Zelda rupees, and look! They're so shiny! :D

      @JoshSJoshingWithYa Před 8 lety +2

      Thomas Manley Mercurz Z HOLD IT! That doesn't disprove my glass theory! It just... kinda... disproves my disproving of the sapphire theory. Hm...
      Okay then, how about expense? Wouldn't it be tons cheaper and more efficient to produce glass than it would to produce sapphires? I mean, it costs fifteen of those things to buy a freaking deku stick! Death Mountain is probably the only area in Ocarina of Time with the sufficient amount of heat and pressure to make sapphires, but even if rupees were produced there, it still takes a LOT of time to make them! Like... millions of years!

    • @shinobimanexe
      @shinobimanexe Před 8 lety +1

      +Josh S NOT SO FAST!!! According to the lore of Legened of Zelda the Minish Cap: the Pikkori are responsible for quite literally for the various item spawns that exist across all the of the LOZ Lore by that standard its not unlikely that the Pikkori would have an easier time producing mass amounts of corundum crystals because of the minish magical properties (being able to change the size of people and objects) a spec of corundum could become an entire rupie by that logic

    • @monsterhuntersavage2
      @monsterhuntersavage2 Před 8 lety

      +Josh S But if you think about it, currently the rupies cost might be that high in the real world because of inflation and rarity of rubies and other gems, while they might be so plentiful that they decided that that is normal currency in their "Planet/universe", as an example if you think about it we used gold for a time as coins as currency in some places making the need for it higher and production of it making golds over all value go down, so the same may apply in that universe.

    So, look at a lego, close to a light, and make sure your holding it, and have a side facing your light. Good! Now move your hand around a bit. See how the shine on the lego moves? The shine tries to follow the light, same for the rupees because they are not see-through.
    What about the shadows you ask? Well, the rest of the lego would be not getting enough light to reflect the room... so basically, the other side of the rupee is darker.

    @WolfWalrus Před 7 lety +20

    This video is based off the assumption that the value of rubies is the same in their world as it is in ours. Rubies are largely valued because of their scarcity (although they have some scientific applications, these are things we can dismiss in the Zelda universe), but there's not any guarantee that corundum is as scarce in the Zelda universe as it is in ours. The value of a rupee at $13,492,488.75 is what it would be worth in this universe (also not what it would sell for, since finding a buyer for a single uncut gemstone of that size would be really tricky), but it could be that their only (or at least primary) worth in the Zelda universe is for their fiat value (the value ascribed to them by central governing bodies). And yes, I spend far too long thinking about video game economics as well.

      Which is why this "theory" is bunk. It's only taking into the account what we see in the world, and not what Link holds above his head. The rupees he holds above his head is bigger than the palm of his hands, which is still ridiculously big for a gemstone.

    • @TsukuneD
      @TsukuneD Před 8 lety +8

    • @PwnzratorX7X
      @PwnzratorX7X Před 8 lety +6

      He's only going off the math he had previously known. He couldn't go off any other games except Ocarina because Link could be a different height, meaning he has to start completely from scratch. He can't do anything Link pulls from chests since you can't see all of him, and have to estimate the sizes. So, no, the theory makes sense, the explanation is sound.

    There is only one problem that i can see in this theory. Rarity. If a gem is commonly found and the common shine is what link is carrying then It isn't that expensive in his universe. Yes to have a "rupee" in our universe it would be that expensive... However you can't say link is paying that much for the bombs because rupees are so common that it isn't like your parting with millions of dollars for five bombs.

      i was thinking the same thing but that brings up another question. why arent ther more rupies floating around for decoration. if theyr that common people should probly be throwing them out with the trash or hoarding them. realisticly this destroys the economy of the game because money is worthless. if theres no money then all cost is based on arbitrary numbers. this means that they hold other real world value. the only thing i can think of is to sustain life. if all sentient species accept rupees as payment i can only conclude that they all stem from a common ancester. a species that has evolved over millenia according to the location that they chose to live in

    • @felipemartinschoi2295
      @felipemartinschoi2295 Před 8 lety

      that's right. Now let's take this thought further. Link's magical world has an abundance of shiny minerals scattered around the land.
      every 3 meters you walk, dig or swim, there will be at least 1 heavy green crystal of hexagonal shape.
      Beyond making the world alive, warm, smart and leaving behind the triforce, the goddesses felt something was missing. So they scattered these shiny minerals accross their creation, making it a natural catwalk for their eventual return.
