  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, is the nation's third biggest killer after heart disease and cancer. About 150,000 Americans die of COPD each year. Among women, it is more deadly than breast and ovarian cancers combined. Ted Koppel focuses on the disease for a report next weekend on CBS "Sunday Morning." His wife, Grace Anne, was given only a few years to live when she was diagnosed 16 years ago. The Koppels join "CBS This Morning" to discuss why they're advocating for more research into prevention and treatment.

I have a rather unusual respiratory condition and at the moment I have about 18% lung volume. But I’m lucky I still manage to work 2 days a week as an adviser for a Disability Charity here in the U.K. Today I met a young mother of two who has had brittle asthma (which comes under the COPD umbrella) since the age of 11 and has now been diagnosed with emphysema and has never smoked a single cigarette in her life. I don’t mind that I’m dying, I’m a recovering alcoholic who has been blessed with 22 years of sobriety, I’m 57 and was told I wouldn’t make 40. But when a clean living person of 25 with two beautiful daughters knows she probably won’t see them grow up it saddens and angers me beyond words! I do have a faith in God, but sometimes I wish I understood him better!

C.O.PD. slowly but surely the body. Thank God over the last 40 years some light has been shown. If I hear one more person just get over, toughen up, you just want attention. If you think someone might the beginnings get to a doctor for testing. Family and friends must understand it's different for each patient. I walked 5 family members to the end. Knowledge is power.

Mary J Hanson if you've "walked five people to the end"...help COPD....move up from 155...raise funds, call politicians...help...find a cure or at least advancements. Too, many talk and don't do anything...see above...oh yeah...they get tax deductions and paid well.

Second hand smoke and air pollution are major contributors to COPD. She may not have smoked, but did Ted?

Tolba Szy she was a smoker of many years. We have never been told about Mr. Koppel's smoking habits, but many in the news business smoke...it's a stressful business.

+Wildflower Honeybee- Stress is a cop-out for smokers to continue smoking. Smoking is incredibly addictive. Smoking does not relieve stress, it drugs the smoker and distracts them from the problem. Newsrooms full of smokers is a second hand pack-a-day workplace.

@@tolbaszy8067 maybe she was thinking 3rd hand smoke? And, it's well know many news reporters have died of lung diseases and it is a stressful field, and it seems stressed people do smoke. Also it's been proven nicotine helps mentally ill people...silence voices...look it up.. research...Google and books are your friends. Knowledge is a beautiful thing.
