  • Guadalupe Rosales’ community-sourced archive projects like “Veteranas and Rucas” and “Map Pointz started after Rosales noticed the erasure of Latinx culture and experiences in memories of L.A.’s rave and party crew scene of the 90s. Rosales shares how these digital archive projects created community and a sense of collective storytelling.

Please do not retroactively apply the term "latinx" to anything, ever. Actually it's better if people just stop using it. If you self-identify as Latinx cool whatever. But don't apply it to people who don't because it's kinda offensive. There was a legit scene back then, and I promise you that latinx wasn't there to talk about it.

I was part of the LA Party Scene, one thing i hear is people talk about how the LA Party Scene was the Rave Scene…. No it wasn’t.. They were two separate scenes….
The Rave scene had been around before the LA Party Scene. The Rave scene is more of a worldwide scene with a variety of electronica music generes like
Trance, Techno, gabber, Jungle, House, etc etc…at illegal warehouses, etc etc..
    Mostly composed of white people…
The LA Party Scene was mostly composed of hispanics of course, and the scene in its early stages played some disco, flashbacks, freestyle, deep house, then in late 90s it was hardhouse…
    At illegal warehouses as well..
In 99 the LA Party scene was dieing out. Less Rebels and Groovers were around.. It continued to the early 2000s but it wasn’t the same anymore… then it eventually died out….
Both scenes had their similarities but were different scenes…
Party scene had : party crews, rebels, freestylers, breakers, poppers, and groovers
Rave scene had: Candy kids, shufflers, junglists, headbangers, jackers etc etc…
Two different scenes, i did both…

Yes you’re 💯 correct. Rave? No Rebel scene. By 1998 everyone at Arena was dressing Sporty. It was changing and all those high school kids including me have moved on to the real WORLD life. Rebel 94 to 98.

@ValeriaBenavides it's a term that Latinos do not like. You can just say Latin to keep it "gender neutral" (when actually Latinos is gender neutral). No need to add the x to keep up with this nonsense ideology.

When I think of LA I def think about east los and all its different culture. I am an old white kid and we def looked to LA skate punk/graff/cholo as a fashion. Partying is the root. I lusted after gals that oozed a lil chola but def knew the "poor" or "lower class" in my town wouldn't mess w white boys. It is why I am glad looking back I was a middle class kid where this whole world of race is irrelevant. I sure dig ya making an archive of a subculture lady! Cheers from Santa Cruz ca

The LA rave scene in general seems to be poorly documented. I do listen to the hardhouse vinyl albums people upload on YT and sometimes you do see, the address of labels on the records being cities in California. Sometimes you see a Hispanic name.

Main reason why we had these 🎉 parties because the whites didn’t want to invite us to their parties 80s and 90s and it just blew up . 🖤👽🖤👽🖤👽🖤This what is like in LA for me 90s I miss those memories 😢 … some of my friends made it thru some of them didn’t …. This brought joy and tears
I remember in the early 90s when we were starting these flyer rave parties … with rebels, goths, ravers , white people all of a sudden wanted to come too lol 👽🖤
They were very underground… sometimes you needed a code or veryyyy IFYKYK TYPE DEAL …we just didn’t want gangsters or skinheads or fights breaking up our parties
By the mid 90s it was kinda over the gangsters took over which was fine …
But the late 80s and early 90s will always be in my heart
