Imagine aliens land on Earth a million years from now. What will these curious searchers find of us? They will find what geologists, scientists, and other experts are increasingly calling the Anthropocene, or new age of mankind. David Biello explains how the impacts that humans have made have become so pervasive, profound, and permanent that some geologists believe we merit our own epoch.

I learn more from Ted ed than school
Sudipta Ghosh same here bro
True
So to compensate, my teachers show our class Ted Ed videos regularly.
Just today our chemistry teacher showed us two Ted Ed videos
That's because schools are set by curriculums. This is more freelance learning 🙂

A million years from now they will know Dave threw that bottle there and din't pick it up.

Am I the only one who pronounces Epoch as eepok and not epic?
DangoX3 eepok is the right way
DangoX3 I was scrolling through the comments hoping somebody would say something lol I'm pretty sure its eepok.
DangoX3 haha this comment is epic
since the word comes from greek Originally the end of Epoch (ch) is a sound not in the English languageIts also a spanish x (Im greek)
Eepock is teh English (UK) version, epic is English (US)
Future aliens: damn they done fcked up
LMFAO
Look, they tried to laminate their planet but didn't finish the job.
I haven't had this kind of grief in such a long time
Plot twist: The Aliens find out that the Humans are their Ancestors, before tgey escaped from their dying Planet to evolve into different Species in Space.
DEMIAN Zarnoski DAMN
What if in the future when we tried to escape from our planet to colonize another planet (mars maybe) we find out that we are descendants of Aliens that escaped an apocalypse from mars.
@KikomochiMendoza
That won't happen because DNA evidence proves that we evolved along side every other organism on this planet
@@KikomochiMendoza just exploded my brain
Not a very surprising plot twist, albeit a mediocre one.
Those aliens better hope we're not around anymore when they arrive.
L Galicki Band i think, usually the one being found first has a disadvantage...
Honki Ponk Are you talking about being probed? 😁
L Galicki Band we won't be. We are setting our own self destruction, our way of living is unsustainable
Mmm yummy alien meat
If they can make it here, they will likely be able to kill us. Unless we are the ones that make it back by using time travel to change something (like killing an opponent for example), in which case we would know better than to show ourselves and reveal that technology.
In the end, it was the aliens who were actually future humans looking back on our past.
@@MyTran-fm9vd they look back and think
We really fuked up

I love this youtube channel, its full of knowledge and wisdom.I appreciate the hard work of its creators.
The only man-made objects Aliens would be impressed at are Dank Memes.
haha yeah
They'll think that Win10 was evolved from Win8 which evolved from Win7 & Win7 evolved from WinXp etc..
Same goes for Linux/OS versions.
They'll know the Terminal/Command prompt is a common ancestors, but they will never find the missing link.
They would have a hard time to figure out how all that traveled between continents, was it capable of flying perhaps!
agree, but they will know we byte
A million years from now Mount Rushmore will still be around, unless something big happens to it. According to geologists, the granite that the memorial is carved into erodes only one inch every 10,000 years. Considering the size of Mount Rushmore, that means that it would take 7.2 million years for the last traces of the faces to disappear.
But would they be recognizable as faces, and not simply some unusually textured surface?
Lets hope we get rid of it before then.
@@GuitarSolosInc. why?
@@davecallanan6004 He hates the very idea that humanity will last.
Good to see that humanity learned to accept that we exterminated the megafauna in most of the Pleistocene. The previous reasearchs were doing intelectual malabarisms to evade this conclusion, because of this politic consequences.
i think you mean malarbarismos?
Will we leave Earth or will we fall due to our own incompetence before we ever get to see the rest of space?
Description Untitled Hmm.. maybe
Raechel914 we could theoritcly travel round the universe but not multi universe
Huda emcmora when we think globally we unravel the cosmos, but when we think nationally, we perish in nuclear fire
why we need communism
Raechel914, You know how we can see space but we humans haven't gone past even our own solar system yet? That's what I mean by "rest of space". To go as far as our Machines.
Yet we never learn we have been warned and *chose* not to act so our future generations will be left the the suffering and the pain. Truly despicable behavior.
Indeed, you never learn so you are despicable. Seriously, they told you Venice would be flooded and uninhabited by 2015... they told you ALL the oil would be come by now, they told you the ozone layer was going to evaporate a decade ago. But you still swallow whatever they feed you. You're a very loyal, dogmatic follower of their cult, which is as reliable as Jehovah's Witnesses telling you the Rapture is coming.
I really enjoy watching these videos. I'm learning and I'm interested
The Memes will survive
yes the 9 gag rock
Not Magical yes they shall live on
How? Once the power goes out, memes would only exist on almost every flash drive and hard drive on earth, but since those are made out of plastic and different types of metal, and since metal rusts, memes, along with music, movies, historical records, both in digital and physical format would be wiped in about 10 years, after the building it was in collapses. I'm sorry if I ruined a good joke, it just this topic really fascinates me lol.
@@TheDudeWithTheHatN2 That would probably survive though. Especially if they bury it. However, I doubt any advanced society would build in the desert to build something but find it and care enough to unbury it, however, there is a chance that as time goes on, the desert would transform into a rainforest or something, which then it would be more likely that the rock would be unearthed.
@@Sonicbro-xx6sg of course

Indeed... when morons get science degrees, and tell you too much carbon dioxide will kill plants... which BREATHE carbon dioxide. To be expected from the religious morons who date their fossils by looking at the rocks, while the geologists date their rocks by looking at the fossils.

I'm sure the planet has a plan, it brought us here
you think the planet wants to suicide ?
Slaigg Meron humans could cause our own extinction but we could never destroy the planet. If we detonated every nuclear weapon tomorrow all humans would die but life would go on. New bacteria, plants and animals will eventually immerge in a hundred years. The earth doesn't care about humanity
Chrissy Phan I'm pretty sure the planet, if conscious, would have been like any other being with a bacterial infection: oblivious to the bacterial proliferation until they start to cause serious problems. Maybe the planet will be able to kill us off before we kill it.
I love listening to this channel , it very good for me:))

LOVE THIS GUY!
Imagine if almost everybody disappeared, only left about 1000 in the world and 600 years later the new civilization would discover everything we built buried in the nature
Isn't that sort of what we already experience with some Egyptian/Persian/other civilisations? We have no clue how some of the buildings/machines/patterns from those times could have been made.
H Kr there’s a difference. We aren’t sure (not have no idea) how they build it with the lacking technology they had to work with. If humans found our stuff they’d have no idea how t was done. They couldn’t replicate it even if they wanted. We could easily build another pyramid or Great Wall of china or anything else
H Kr yess but i meant like with time we would lose all knowlodge of medicine, technology, language, cultures, etc like we'd evolved into different ways of living and we wouldn't even know if there were humans before us and what happened to them and then suddenly we would find all those buildings, cities...
Maybe they could piece together the shards of a long lost communication system known as the "internet" and with their supercomputers, decipher everything the internet had ever produced. Including this comment.
I love Addison Anderson's voice!

Anyone else thought epoch was pronounced by "ee-pahk"?
Nick C It is. Ted Ed just failed at simple grammar.
Vasara Dragonsbane *phonology
'epək
Both pronunciations are acceptable. www.dictionary.com/browse/epoch?s=t
Nick C eepok is how it is said in uk.
We are in a world where we are evolving according to the natural laws ...we have some formulations about the laws, how they work and how it affects us but we do not understand it completely and have little control over it. So imagine making AGI that takes every perspective possible to find the best solution to let the humans grow and evolve at best. That would be really an exciting future....Maybe we can even prevent an asteroid from making us extinct using AGI... So lets put our focus on stepping towards making a better future for the humankind by making the dream of AGI turn into reality...
You can google about the "Holocene Extinction" to learn more about the subject.
Amazing
We did ruin everything, and continuing to do so
Sorry about the repetitions below. I don't know how it happened!!
Depending on where they dig, Aliens would burrow down and think an asteroid made of plastic must have struck the planet.
where an ocean previously was
then they would find sea animal bones in it and be very confused
what can we do about it? What actions should we take?
We assume aliens will do all these advanced tests, but with us being aliens to mars, we have done barely any of these tests.
Fake Sulfate Well the surface life would probably provide an incentive
You know it's a good Ted-Ed video when the ad preceding it is a Ted-Ed video.
I'm 100% sure there's someone out there ............... Just by looking at size and "stuff" which can create an maintain life present in universe ( also including the non observable universe)
That "stuff" is a big topic but that stuff is present in such a large quality which makes my belief strong .
I said this as a philosophy based on scientific facts .
oooh such a nice ending
Or we expand to space and were still here in a million years
In a million years, our genome will have deteriorated to the point of human extinction. Unless genetic engineering steps it up, we'll die out.
legit evrryone thinks we
Not with spelling like that we won’t
At least many will pass on to a new better world, the old one..forgotten forever never to be repeated.
4:39 - Cretaceous is classified as a geologic period, not an epoch.
Thank you for that video maybe people will change.
Ted ed is awesome..
we would only have our own epoch if we lasted for millions of years, we probably only have a 1000 more years at most
the music at the end sounds like portal 2
5:08 yeah let's see how that holds in a few months XD
The book sapiens also offert quit a bit of information on human impact on the biosphere. Going as far as titling mankind : the serial species killer.

4:49 Thank you I'm so tired of hearing people say "So what if the climate is changing, the earth's climate has always been changing".
Thank you. "Man is organic with the world. His inner life molds the environment and is itself deeply affected by it. The one acts upon the other and every abiding change in the life of man is the result of these mutual reactions." ~ Baha'i Faith
I had my first introduction to the term "Anthropocene" at the inaugural meeting of the International Big History Association in Grand Rapids in 2012. bighistory.org. Many authors and thought leaders have suggested that our nuclear detonations mark the beginning of the human epoch. I've also tried to take a long view of what I termed "Mechanoevolution" in the early 2000's. I also try to take a look back at history in my new book, Zero Waste in the Last Best Place, where I observe that until very recently, the only waste humans produced were organic and non-toxic: arrowheads, handaxes, pottery, etc. My colleagues and I are working on zero waste strategies that follow the principles long touted by campers to "leave your campsite cleaner than you found it." If you are interested in joining the zero waste movement, please consider:

If aliens come to the planet, I hope that the earth will be clean. We need to change our future...
These 'aliens' have an understanding of our situation. They may not be aware of it, but they are aware of our actions. They are extremely clever and, even with advanced technology, they cannot kill our children, because it would be to their own advantage. It's just the way we are going to be extinct...
Wow... the aliens will have a lot of merch, and they better be grateful!
The narrator voice is out of this world, wow
we cant change its course. money matters. even though we think of saving the planet, what about the government and businessmen? all they think is business and profit.
One of the thing about business and profit is the productivity, efficiency, and more importantly effectiveness. It will make logically sense for businesses to save the planet as it will prolong the longevity of the human race and that of it natural resources.
Many companies are planning on making electric car using electric or renewable energy such as the sun, hydroelectricity etc. Which make sense.
Fossil fuel are finite, cause harm to the ozone layer and non-renewable - they too could very much profited from this investment. With compromise, we could save the planet while also satisfied the businesses.
Blugale Doh the technology you mentioned was invented many years ago but none of it has gotten into my country. in our country no electric cars, no solar panels, corruption is everywhere. a fellow countryman invented his first motorcycle fueled by water but as soon as the government and businessmen heard it, he dissappeared. no one knows where he is.
