Shawn received immunity from elimination, and given a pick of the judges' heritage cuisines for the next challenge theme; he picked Claudio's South American ingredients for the others to work with in the elimination challenge. For his third advantage, he was able to save two home cooks from elimination; he picked Terry and Vince. At the end of the cook, Matthew and Michelle made the two best dishes. The worst three dishes belonged to Jennifer, David and Veronica, and David was eliminated due to his lack of knowledge of South American cuisine.

i find it interesting that south america seems to be always be lumped together, you dont hear "european cuisine" you hear italian, spanish, french and so on

^ not really. asian is divided in japanese, chinese, malaysian, thai, korean, etc... yes its weird south american cuisine isnt divided in this way. though sometimes i do hear people refer to it separately like Mexican food, Spanish cuisine, etc.

not at all. chinese cuisine is identified distinctly. pretty much all of south east asia's cuisine is lumped together. japanese and korean food are sometimes called out separately but often overshadowed by chinese and sometimes are lumped together as 'east asian'. south asia's cuisine is lumped together as 'indian cuisine'. central asian food isn't talked about at all. and all middle eastern food including levantine food which tends to be very different from central and southern middle east, is well, again lumped as 'middle eastern'.
i do agree that south american food tends to get overshadowed more, though. mexico is in north america but culturally hispanic.

This is actually making me realise how little people know about South American food. Panna cotta are Italian and churros are Spanish so I don’t know why Claudio didn’t call them out for making them
Id guess they weren't called out because so few people know south american food.
Matthew's panna cotta was more like a fusion rather than an authentic dish, and it seemed pretty innovative (according to the judges).
Matthew's dish was more of a fusion, and while Churros are not authentic South American cuisine, they have become synonymous with Latin America to the North Americsn cultural conscious.
This whole season was a mess i remember S2 had top16 and this had top14 then again, in S2 when Jon won the first mystery box challenge he had got only 1 person to save he saved David but here Shawn got to save 2 people as if producers want this season to end as quickly as possible 😂

Those foods eventually became popular in Hispanic countries which is why they made them lol. How do people not know about churros being popular among Hispanic people. And honestly like creme brulee or flan panna cotta is just related to it.

Masterchef is really taking people who are already great cooks, and elevating them. An ordinary home cook wouldn't be able to do most of what they are doing. I'm a pretty good home cook, but in no way could I do half that stuff without recipe books.

Poblano chile is not South American, and churros are meant to be sweet. Also the girl that made pupusas said " Salvadorian" which is not South America, this challenge was a total mess.
every time i see sean, i cant help but remember the time he opened the lid of their grill and caused his team to lose the challenge.
from what jennifers expressions in the eliminating part, i knew she thought she was going home, but was shocked to see david go instead.

Salvadorian food is not South American, it is Central American. And pupusas are not served with guacamole, they are served with tomato salsa and curtido (cabbage and carrots pickled using vinegar, salt, and sugar). The reason why her pupusas were very doughy is because she made them so small and didn’t put enough filling. And the way she described it was like she was trying to describe gorditas which are flat tortillas cut into two circles and filled/grilled with cheese and any meat, which is a Mexican dish (North American and not South American still). A total tragedy for the Latin American culture that we are sadly still mixed up as being all the same when we are very diverse in every way possible to each other.

She’s hearing impaired, AND is a fully capable, intelligent human.

I lived in a part of Brasil which was heavily settled by the Italians. Also southern Brasil was settled by a lot of Germans, on fact german is still spoken as often as Portuguese. Also sections of Brasil were settled by Confederates who fled southern U.S. after the Civil War. So all sections were influenced by other countries.

"South American ingredients and dishes". A lot of the cooks do Mexican inspired food, Mexico is in North America.... Mexico is really the only latin American country that uses spices and chili peppers in their dishes , so i dont know why they said "South America Im thinking spicy food". They then mention some Central America countries and dishes🤦♂️🤦♂️
