    Hiya
    Just come across your video.
    I am a floorlayer ,couple of things people might find useful. Trim fix will react with the vinyl over time causing possible discolouration. Use FW Ball and co F44 adhesive. A better option for the diy user is Altro Expresslay, to look at it is exactly their same as the walkway but is designed to be laid lose and only fixed with Altro double sided tape. It is an excellent product I have laid in schools and commercial buildings so plenty good enough for a camper.
    All the best!

    Bit late now but when we fit altro in bathrooms we leave an upstand at the edge wherever possible and use weld rod to seal the cuts, just to try and contain any spills. Just a thought. We're using normal lino in our van this time as we had altro in a previous van and because of the texture it can be a bit of a pig to clean thoroughly. Hello Greg, thank you so much for the time and care you take to produce these videos. It seems like the activity has slowed a bit, so perhaps you are out roaming the world...instead of building a van? I had a quick question. I have a 2014 sprinter camper van that came with no seats in it but there is a metal floor. There are a few small holes where the seats were removed. My question is - I don't have any way of creating a plywood subfloor (no tools, no skills, no friends or family who can help. I am also in the Netherlands where I can not do this work where it is visible and I don't have a workspace with electricity, etc.) I have been told my wooden cabinets will rot out if glued to the metal floor directly. I have been racking my brain for a solution. For instance, I COULD glue a linoleum/vinyl floor in place over the metal and then use liquid nails/acrylate expoxy to secure wood to linoleum, or lay down rubber flooring and do the same thing. I realize that neither of these is the "right" way to do it. A plywood subfloor screwed in would be preferable. If you have thoughts, opinions or idea on this, I would be so appreciative. Thank you!

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  Před 2 lety

      You are going to need tools to complete your build so before you do anything else invest in some cheap tools and then start practicing on scraps of wood. Do the job right the first time and you won’t have problems on the future. You can always sell the tools once you have finished to get some cash back.

    Watching this video again I’m wondering if it’d be easier cutting the vinyl on top of the ply before it goes in the van, more for the curves than anything as they look really hard compared to the straight edges. Hoping to do my floor soon and having a quick recap of your videos makes it so much easier as I can order things in advance and know how to approach it before I start

    Awesome videos Greg. A friend of mine mentioned about when cutting the vinyl floor to use the original floor panel as a template. Lay it on the Vinyl and cut around it to get a good shape and finish. What do you think to this?

    Nice job as always and a tidy result; not the color or look I would have chosen but then again this is not my van, now is it? :) I'm all for man-made materials though, but will probably go with a light color fake wood look instead, something a little "warmer", but still waterproof and tough.

    Hi Greg. If I choose to install laminate/LVT flooring, would you suggest doing it before/after fitting the furniture, so I can allow for an expansion gap rather than if I do it before where the floor can buckle?

    Ok fella... you are my NEW hero! I literally have just binge watched all your van video up until this one hahaha.
    I have a question... I'm just starting a van project on my channel... similar-ish to yours but I will be having a massive garage in the back to store all my windsurfing kit plus Mountain bikes etc.
    So my question is... if you were doing what I'm doing how would you seal the floor? as obviously there will be saltwater from the kit dripping in the van! Is the vinyl water proof enough if I say went up the walls a bit in the garage section.
    I'd love to hear your thoughts... as you are the man! I'm a fan now and trust your opinion haha!! (* I don't particularly want to send a fortune :)

      Hello, yes, but the Altro flooring is definitely waterproof, it would be a good idea to put a small radius fillet between the floor and walls and run the vinyl in one piece from floor up the walls as you have suggested. Thanks for the great comment

    That looks fantastic Greg -I am tempted to say ‘all singing and dancing’ but didn’t want to encourage you too much in that department.😂 Not sure if you will know the answer to this - if you have to lift that floor covering will the glue ‘give’ or will it damage the plywood subfloor (Thinking I may put this down in my workshop).

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  Před 6 lety +1

      Hi Norman, I used a very strong glue which was a one shot deal and would be very hard to get up but that’s what I wanted. You can get a lower contact that they use for carpet tiles that stays sticky for years. Are you thinking if it gets damaged and needs replacing?

    • @normanboyes4983
      @normanboyes4983 Před 6 lety

      Greg Virgoe Thanks Greg - that’s useful info. Well for a workshop/shed there is always a risk as the years go by or heavy/sharp objects dropping and damaging the vinyl. Maybe I should look at a similar product in tile form.

    It looks like a great first attempt. It seems like you decided to go with the conventional/straight razor--did the hook not work out well when you tried it?
    Were there any other materials you were considering for the floor?

      @GregVirgoe  Před 6 lety +1

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  Před rokem +1

      Spray over the main structures of the van and any large flat areas doesn’t need a lot to hold it in place just a few tacks here and there is enough then foil tape all the joins and edges. 👍🏼😃

    Hello Greg - Happy New Year! I haven't been back here in a while, and I changed my youtube channel to a branded account but I'm still the same person, Brenda Tharp, that has followed you for some time! After you put your lovely floor in here, did you caulk the edges of it where it meets the van walls? I know about the stair nosing, but wondered about whether to caulk, we are thinking yes...to prevent bits from getting down in that open edge, even though it's pretty close to wall in most areas.

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  Před 6 lety

      They are fold away city bikes from Viking, I am 180cm tall and 80cm inside leg. These bikes have 20" wheels 50cm and with the seat post down and handle bars folded they are less than 2ft or 600mm tall so fit under our bed perfectly. We are taking these to Europe with us 😃

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  Před 5 lety

      Hi Tony, I had some contact adhesive the guys use at work for fixing laminate but it’s a one shot deal once you touch the two together there’s no way you’re shifting it. I would recommend Trim fix as we used that on the step and it’s perfect, very strong and hi temperature and you can get hold of it really easily. 👍🏼

    Noticed at 5:45 that there are markings for electrics. Did you run wires under the floor? We are currently in the design phase of our van build and are trying to figure out the best way to get both the water & power from one side of the van to the other.

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  Před 6 lety

      Yes, well spotted. I laid a 40 x 25mm PVC electrical trunking into the 25mm Celotex so I could get the electrics from one side of the van to the other. With a trunking stalled you can also rewire without having the floor up again. There are two such trunkings
      With the water services they will be exposed in the garage and cupboards, I do not recommend you bury these in case they leak.
