  • Gordon Murray designed the McLaren F1 as well as a number of successful Formula 1 cars. Today he is the head of Gordon Murray Automotive which builds supercars of a very special caliber. Light. Focused. Naturally-aspirated. Manual gearbox. Many RPMs.
    Today we're talking about their most recently debuted model, the T.33 Spyder, a breezy piece of carbon beauty powered by a 615HP V12 that redlines at 10,250RPM. We talk about the design process; what inspired the shape; why the windshield is different from every other supercar; why the car doesn't need side intakes; Gordon's dislike of buttresses; his guilty pleasure car; the type of car he's NEVER owned; and something he collects that you wouldn't expect.

    What a treat. Gordon is such a breath of fresh air in the world of overstyled hypercars and 3,000 lb.+ curb weights.

    • @srinitaaigaura
      @srinitaaigaura Před rokem +7

      Not only hypercars. This trend towards heavy SUVs and bigger and bigger cars, fatter and fatter people, while also trying to reduce emissions is hypocritical. The amount of energy that goes into manufacturing is way more, the fuel economy sucks, there's less interior and storage space though the car gets bigger, ride quality suffers, touchscreens suck while driving and none of them are even as good as a phone or tab, and you have to be a strongman just to change one of those 22 inch wheels. I have a Honda City from 2008 that weighs 1100 kg and is just 1695 mm wide and it is a proper common man's driver's car. And other than regular maintenance it is as reliable as a fine watch.

      @Nightmaretyrant Před rokem +3

      @@hagestad OMG the whole Steve Nichols thing is so overblown just because Jay Em wanted views.... and they leave out HUGE chunks of the story for his narrative, if anything MOST of Steves work was ACTUALLY John Barnards who did the bulk of the design work for Mclaren at the time and then they kept his basic design through till the 90s, When Barnard was poached Steve took over briefly but he never did anything innovative then Gordon came in and further improved the design for the new Honda engine though he has given Barnard credit. Gordon has a TON of firsts to his name and to say he doesn't know anything about Motorsport when he ran the Brabham team as lead designer, engineer and team manager is F#$%ing insane. Also SO MANY from that era reference Murray when discussing f1 while I've never even heard them bringing Steve up. I'm Sorry. Get over it.

    Matt this conversation is next level! I love how this time, it wasn't you interviewing GM, it was you shooting the shit with GM about an absolute masterpiece. You already got his vibe from the last interview so you were really prepared to just enter his world with this one and it shows. I was not just captivated, I'm mesmerized by every GM interview I can find on youtube, but being mesmerized and then being dropkicked by your intelligent and contextual sense of humour, watching this talk was a very enjoyable experience as a fan of yours and a petrolhead. I looked at that one test run on Top Gear where the T50 unleashed that V12. It went from redline in 4th to 5th (228 kmph to 290 kmph - 142 mph to 180 mph) in 4.5 sec. It's faster than a 765LT, and that's with 2 people, and high downforce mode, no vmax boost. This will be on another planet from the F1, and the T33 will not be far behind. These cars will be hypercar quick. And the T50s engine apparently makes 770 HP something and with the boost from the ISG it has better power to weight than a Koenigsegg One:1 on 95 Octane gas. It will be a monster.

    What a shame that no major OEM has GMA do up a sports car for them...a "handling by GMA" badge is a missed opportunity.
    I'd also love to know if GMA would consider slicing that V12 in half and making a sub $1,000,000 (maybe closer to $500,000) mid engined sports car, still in limited numbers but with the same level of care and attention. It could be smaller, even lighter, and would only further spread the love for GMA cars. Though he did say that the V12 was the engine choice he wanted, so I guess an inline six would be a compromise. But...I can guarantee the demand would be there.

    Wow. Best interview i've seen with GM. I'm from UK so, whilst i really admire GM, I wasn't aware of the channel. I've never seen GM so relaxed - brilliant! I've loved the F1 since it was first unveiled and i love the GM ethos - if i had the money, the T50 and T33 Spyder (along with F1) would be the cars i desire the most. Within my budget, i have a S2 Elise - which i feel is closest in my budget range to the GM ethos.

    Hey Matt, one day you liked one of my twitter posts that was an onboard video of a new gen nsx, as well as a new gen ford gt, which I mentioned magic steering for the NSX and the light weight wheels on the ford gt, I've turned my passion into this channel and those cars will come up soon!!

    Would be nice if Gordon Murray designed an affordable supercar for one of the big manufacturers. Something simple and light with no computers.

    there's a couple old car-boats in my little WI town! No idea who made those but they're classic old convertibles that don't look too wildly out of place on the road, but they can just drive into the water and troll around with the propeller sticking out the back! lemme tell ya, seeing a cute little roaster halfway submerged, headlights right above the water line, from the vantage point of a waterski, is a very odd feeling.

    I have found GM to be a little pompous about his own achievements in other interviews, but this was him at his more modest best and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole of Matt and Zacks interview and was actually a bit sad when it ended.

    I hope those how buy Gordon's cars are actually different from usual car collector how just parks the car and doesn't drive it. I actually hope it becomes competition how has most miles on their t50 and that cars which have story to tell become most valuable ones.
