As someone who has no nostalgic connection to this film, beyond always seeing it's cover at the video store as a kid & watched it for the first time in their thirties, I will state that the film does hold up rather well.
There are weird incongruous elements to the film, the fact that The Beast comes from space seems to have been tacked on ONLY to make this film "just like Star Wars," but if one takes it as a straight fantasy, with it's quest as another version of The Heroes Journey, it's a much better fantasy film than more recent ones in the genre.
Another advantage this film has is how REAL everything looks. There are no computer generated landscapes, they are using REAL locations or very well constructed sets. No digital creatures, everything is Props, prosthetic & puppets (plus a little stop motion animation). Even the magician who turns himself into animals, is changing into REAL animals, a luxury rarely seen anymore.
Then there's how dark this story is, from start to finish Characters Actually Die in this film. All through the quest, more & more of the supporting cast perish, sometimes in brutal ways, which gives the villains real threat & makes the final victory actually feel meaningful. Again, not something you see very much these days.
And then there's what to ME is the most memorable scene: The Ride of the Fire Mares. Yes, it's easy now to pick apart how the effect was achieved but it still looks incredible. If you cannot be carried away by James Horner's indispensable music to ride those horses through the air... this movie simply wasn't meant for you.
    Thank You for Reading.

Love the review, Minus all the Starwars comparisons.
When I watched this movie as a Kid back in the 80. Last thing i was thinking was "Gee this is allot like Starwars."
I was thinking... "Gee this is allot like the Lord of the Rings Cartoon." Also I think Conan was more of an influence then Starwars was.
I mean I get it, Starwars was a great movie... But it wasnt the be all end all sci fi movie at the time.
Its like saying Ironman was the first Super hero movie. Sure Iron man kicked off the MCU but that statement ignores Blade, The fantastic 4, Spider man, X-men.
Ironman was the first superhero Movie that did it right.
There was a tone of Sci fi and fantasy before Starwars, Starwars just was the first that did it right.

    • @ozmul5810
      @ozmul5810 Před 4 lety +4

@@germanicelt Ill give you that the laser effects was ripped from starwars. That's just one thing.
Just eats at me how everyone acts like Starwar's was this huge cinematic achievement, Like it was Avengers Endgame or something. When it was more like Iron man. The first movie was moderately successful yah but it wasn't that much of a game changer. That didn't happen until the completion of the series in the early 80s. It was Return of the Jedi that changed everything.
Crazier yet, I remember being sat down in front of an old black and white tv to Watch star wars... Wile the adults drank and played cards in the other room.
It was a HUGE cultural milestone....I remember hardly anyone giving two shits about. Past all the figures and toys and lunchboxes, it was just another movie.
Ill not deny it set a standard, but it didn't define that standard.
Its been that way all the way up until a few years ago. When Disney bough the rights, and then suddenly Starwar's was this Massive cultural paragon of cinema everyone and there mother was trying to rip off. Never mind the fact that there where successful Sci Fi movies before Starwars Like 2001 a Space Odyssey, and Silent Running.
Point is Nowday's everyone think anything that remotely resembled Starwars is a ripoff. Wile Starwars was not as big as some remember it being.
I think Disney helped with that.

Slayers = Stormtroopers; Vanishing Castle = Death Star; Outlaws = Han and Chewy. The movie is clearly influenced by Star Wars, but that doesn’t stop it from being fantastic in its own right. The Slayers are still some of the best cannon fodder henchmen out there. The scene of them rising out of the pool shooting the bolt (laser?) off their sword and then using said sword was amazing!

But I assume that they all wanted to jump on the bandwagon of the enormous Star Wars success (in the case of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture", "The Black Hole" and "Moonraker" I even heard that explicitly). But just like you I don´t see much similarities between the end products and Star Wars. I'm a fan of this movie. In some ways it's very 80s but in other ways it feels like even older fantasy epics. The overall concept of a medieval fantasy world invaded by cosmic horror aliens (the 'slayers' are pretty much tiny Cthulhus piloting animated suits of armour) is one I've ripped off for my own D&D game.

I saw this in the theater when it came out. Really liked it. A Fantasy Sci-Fi, Conan feel is what I felt it was like. Never felt it was similar to Star Wars at all.

80’s fantasy as a grade school kid was original and rad! Krull. Willow. Labyrinth. Never Ending Story. Clash of the Titans. The Dark Crystal. Conan The Barbarian. The list goes on and on. As a stereotypical broken home latchkey kid I owe my creativity and morality to these films. What do kids have now? Reheated leftovers.

This would make such a great remake. There are so many elements that can turn this easily to a dark fairy tale far from the typical 80s fantasy movie.

  • @fernandoestebanzunigaandra8088

I´m a geek, and i love Krull. It´s much more like LOTR than Star Wars (even the giant spider was taken from "Big Spider", from Tolkkien). yes, Liam Nesson should played Colwyn, and i love Lyssette Anthony britsh accent, she was the Khalessi of the eighties. "Krull" deserves a remake, or a tv show. Greettings from Chile. =)

I first watched it when it was new on VHS when I was 11. Kinda scary but cool, and I still wish I'd seen it at the movies when it came out. The score is one of the best ever for any film.

Krull was a million times better than Star Wars ever was! to me, the movie was pristine perfect. honestly, I love every single thing about this movie.I remember I used to have that thick, tie-in comic book, I loved the movie so much, I literally carried around with me at school, this comic book every day, to read it every day until it eventually fell apart, and even then years after I kept it until it was an utter mess. now, at age 51, I still love it just as much now, if not more, than when I was a kid (if memory serves, I think I was in 7th grade... I think...) truly an epic movie, top 10 sci-fi epicness, a million times over Star Wars. it's not even a contest... not by a long shot😇
