  • Mega Q*bert is a full Sega Genesis/Mega Drive homebrew game I made in 2016. It's an unofficial tribute to Warren Davis' and Jeff Lee's classic arcade game Q*bert and is a remake/sequel sort of thing. The game includes two modes - Mega Mode, featuring 80 unique stages, and Arcade Mode, which is a recreation of traditional Q*bert game (though not 100% accurate to the source). Both modes can be played by 1 or 2 players simultaneously.

The game was programmed entirely in C using SGDK.

As you can guess, the meat of the game is Mega Mode, which has a set of brand new stages to beat divided into 10 Levels. Stages come in many shapes and sizes - some are single-screen, others may scroll horizontally, vertically or in both ways. Players can continue playing the game on any stage they want using passwords, which are given for every stage when the game is paused.
There are new cube and enemy types. 2-way and 1-way cubes are the most commonly seen special cubes - they prevent the player from jumping in certain directions and can make navigation through the stage rather tricky at times. Also present are X cubes (which kill the player but let other objects pass through), fragile panels (which break when a player jumps from them and are gone until a player dies), key cubes (triggers the creation of new cubes on the stage) and freeze cubes (players can't jump from them quickly, very rare, they only appear in 3 or so stages in the entire game).
New enemies, among others, feature small red blobs (which move extremely fast), big red blobs (which stay on the platforms for a long time, can be deadly in crowded situations), stop sign dudes (randomly switch between jumping quickly and slowly), spiders (capable of randomly jumping not only to cubes under them, but also to the sides) and shades-clad Coily (who can jump in 6 directions rather than 4 as he chases you through the stage).
The game is overall pretty easy, though some of the late-game stages are rather unforgiving. Enemies in Level 7 completely lock the cubes from being changed into target color and the only way to undo this is to have Q*bertha jump on them. Combined with some tight passages in certain places and rather high frequency of green enemy spawn, this can result in very long chases. Level 8 requires the players to step on the cubes 2 times to change them to the target color, but 3rd landing reverts them back to the starting configuration. Because of big pressure from the enemies and the fact sometimes player might have to wait for Sam/Slick to arrive in order to be able to clear the stage, it can get rather tough.
Looking back I'm not satisfied with a few of the stages and their enemy sets. 4-4 is probably the worst offender with some very narrow, long paths and foes regularly taking away your progress while you can't really do anything about it without taking an intentional death.
The playthrough is not perfect - I die here and there, sometimes I even choose to jump into enemies on purpose in order to despawn all of them, as it's ultimately faster than having to trek through half of the stage making sure all the fields are good. The game doesn't exactly discourage this tactic and is very generous with extra lives, with the player getting a free life pretty much every 1 or 2 stages later on. That said, this is a continue-less playthrough.
As a bonus, here are a few secret passwords you can activate in the game.
123456 - Arcade Mode stage color schemes in Mega Mode
781333 - A bigger pyramid in the Arcade Mode
260072 - Arcade Mode begins on 2nd loop
525582 - Mega Mode Level Select
    918273 - Sound Test

I've been playing this game with my family since the pandemic started and I've got to say, thank you sooo much for freely releasing this! It's a real gift and Mega Q*bert is among my favorite multiplayer Genesis experiences!
My pie-in-the-sky dream update for this game would be the addition of a three or four player multitap mode. I've had so much fun playing this with my sisters and my mom individually, but being able to play with my mom AND my sisters in four player? Man, that'd instantly become my number one favorite Genesis multiplayer game!

    Wait. YOU made this homebrew?
    That's just straight up impressive!
It literally feels like a straight-up 90s port. (Which is a good thing of course. And you're using the configuration music and level completed jingle from the NES ultra games port. And the icing on the cake is that there's music during gameplay)
I literally just discovered this port just today as well, and I'm looking at a developer's playthrough too.

Really good game for a homebrew, but some levels are painfully hard! But it’s still being an excelent game, good job 👍🏻

Hey, if I'm not mistaken you made a bunch of weird games, like one that included eyedrops or something?
Is there any chance you could share those?

In case you somehow see this, CZcams is going to switch all unlisted videos before 2017 (including the ones in your "old stuff" playlist) to private on the 23rd of July unless you manually opt out or set all of them to public again. Here's the official video on it: czcams.com/video/l6UHS1-vDMM/video.html

    • @Markiplier2
      @Markiplier2 Před 3 lety +1

Looks like they are all still unlisted - either you've filled out that stupid form (if that's the case, thanks for keeping these videos preserved) or YT just hasn't changed them for whatever reason. Either way, that's great! I hope old YTPs like those remain on the internet so that future generations can see how internet culture has evolved over the years.
