Grammy Winning Record Every Year (1959-2024)

- This video goes through each year of the Grammys showing which songs won the Record of the Year award.
Record of the Year is awarded for a single or for one track from an album. This award goes to the performing artist, the producer, recording engineer and/or mixer for that song. In this sense, "record" means a particular recorded song, not its composition or an album of songs.
This differs from the Song of the Year, Song of the Year is also awarded for a single or individual track, but the recipient of this award is the songwriter who actually wrote the lyrics and/or melodies to the song. "Song" in this context means the song as composed, not its recording.

No Dylan, no Beatles, no Stones. And Phil Collins didn't get a single win in the 80s? Geez
This is a confusing title, but "record of the year" means song, while Beatles, Bob Dylan, and the Rolling Stones were usually credited with album awards. This is also the American list, so its very partial to soft rock and easy listening.
Beatles 80's?
@@firstmategiddyRecord of the Year is what it’s officially called, they also do Song of the Year but that’s a different category. I explain it more in the description.
@@TheManInMeOfficial Sorry, I should probably specify I mean the title of the award is confusing, not your video name.
@@firstmategiddyAh, I see. Yeah, definitely a poor title.
The Grammy's is just the annual group hug for the American music industry. Seeing the winning songs from the 60s and 70's was a joke. Very proud to see how few Grammy award winning albums I own!
There were some good ones in the 60s/70s - Mrs Robinson, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Aquarius, Girl from Ipanema, Strangers in the Night, Hotel California.
Weird statement but ok
Only half the boast you actually think this is bud 😂
Me when i want to be annoying
Never paid much attention to the Grammys. It’s like the Oscars they almost never get it right.
Couldn’t agree more. The Grammys truly never did get it right. Like hello??? A day in the life. Strawberry fields forever. While my guitar gently weeps ??? Let it be???? Here comes the sun something??? The fact that the Beatles only won 1 Grammy for song of the year in 1965 being Michelle and only one other shows that the Grammys have to be the absolute most wrong and stupid prestige’s award to ever exist even worse than the Oscar’s 😒
I’d say The Grammys are the most egregious of the major awards. They seem the most consistently disconnected.
@@TheManInMeOfficial u a Beatles fan?
At least with Best Picture, the Oscars mostly pick the 2nd or 3rd best option instead of the 1st, and usually you recognize the movie years later. When I tell you there’s albums from just 10 years ago that I don’t recognize that won Album of the Year instead of much better and longer lasting albums. Like they’ve had a horrible run in the 2020’s.
@@ZacV47 although I agree with the awful picks for the 2020’s you kind of contradicted yourself saying the most recent ones are awful
Roger Taylor (Drummer of Queen) at his speech 2001 for Queen being inducted at Rock'n Roll Hall of Fame " this is certainly a big big up actually more than all the Grammys we never got".
Grammys don't take anything away from bands being legends. Bohemian Rhapsody movie put all these awards to shame.
lol, first rock song winner is a Hotel California
Rubbishhhhhhh
Yeah no, 1968, you just wanted riffs and solos in a 3 second clip
The Grammys did NOT cook with these picks 💀
It's interesting that the first Grammy winner was an Italian song (it won the Sanremo music festival in 1958 and then came 3rd in the Eurovision Song Contest).
The best song ever at Eurovision imo, Bowie's cover is also amazing
2 songs from the same album for U2 was ridiculous
Not as ridiculous as seeing Billie Eilish in the list (twice!).
I dont get the hate for Billie, shes a genuinely good artist imo, amazing vocals. This is coming from a rap and hip-hop listener@rupiter2008
What is actually ridiculous is your comment.
@@sampietroj No more ridiculous than you defending U2 lol its 2024
1963 - I wanna hold your hand
1964 - A hard day's night
1965 - Yesterday
1966 - Eleanor Rigby
1967 - A day in the life
1968 - Hey Jude
1969 - Something
1970 - Let it Be.
Este Prêmio Grammy é um LIXO!!!
These judges were so far behind the times.
Reminds me of my old man, an avid listener of music and former critic... who mostly stopped following the trends in the mid 70's.
He would still be giving Bob Dylan and Tom Petty album of the year awards if he were the judge
5 choices is correct
Other is totally uncorrect
There is no “correct”
How can there be no Beatles!?
The establishment were biased against them ig
Grammy 1965 - Best New Artist
Grammy 1967 - Michelle - Song of The Year
Grammy 1968 - Album of Year - Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band
@@rafaelnascimento9181No, it was a cover song.
Good question
They won in other categories calm down
The only picks from this list that I also probably would've chosen were Hotel California, Beat It, Clocks, and Get Lucky. Other than that, there were SO many songs that deserved to be on here
They really liked the ballads
I didn't read all the comments, but nice job with this. These are the actual Grammy winning Record of the Year winners, not the opinion of the creator of the video. We can all disagree, but it's fact - the were the winners of each year.
🎉 Retro music greetings from coastal Mississippi. This is a very nice video. Brings back alot of memories . Especially the 70/80 decade. I still have my vinyl, cassette and cds😂
Damn that was a very quick escalation between 2022 to 2023
I've never said "Yecch" that many times in a six minute span.
Kiss From A Rose - Seal, my personal favourite 👍
Seems like everyone had that Herb Alpert album when I was a kid. Either that, or it just stood out in the mind of a young boy for whatever reason. I do love whipped cream
This is like the rock and roll hall of SHAME.
That was lazy & unfunny
What are you 17 or 60-something? The only ages I can think of stupid enough to act this way
Very interesting. Many thanks 📯
"I honestly love you" in 1975 winning over "The Way We Were" is a travesty
nah, Olivia nailed it, Babs best was Woman in Love
0:56 não sabia que uma das minhas musicas favoritas, Mrs Robinson, era tbm Pop, pensava que só era Folk
As far as I know song of the year is the award for the lyrics and record of the year is the award for the actual song as you hear it and then there’s album of the year and this is what the Grammys web page says about the award “Award to Artist(s) and to Featured Artist(s), Songwriter(s) of new material, Producer(s), Recording Engineer(s), Mixer(s) and Mastering Engineer(s) credited with 20% or more playing time of the album.”
Grammys - run by the same people who chose the artists for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
*Good morning.*
*This list is correct!*
*Grammy Award for RECORD of the Year.*
*Don't confuse with Song of the Year, that is another of the awards, another statuette.*
*Because the 1967 GRAMMY Awards SONG OF THE YEAR was MICHELLE by THE BEATLES !*
Like that’s supposed to change anything, they were still snubbed for most of their careers and in total won less than half a dozen. It took SGT. Pepper for The Beatles to be officially recognised by the academy
You gonna do Song of the Year next?
What was I made for - Billie eilish wins soty on 2024 Grammys
There are so many great singers
Apart from a few standout exceptions, since the 2000's the quality of music had gone to the s!htter. Any singer with integrity who'd win a Grammy would send it back.
1965 is Stan Getz and JOAO Gilberto, not Astrud. Astrud was the wife of Joao Gilberto, she only sing in some featurings
After reading the description, I'm more confused than before.
What's the criteria in electing a "record of the year"? You explained that "Song of the year" was made from a songwriting point of view. Which is totally fair and actually understandable
Then what is this?
Record of the year goes to the actual performers.
@@pikespice performers, producers, i think maybe even the sound engineers? but i'm not sure on that.
The cut for both Moon River and The Days of Wine and Roses are not the singles by Henry Mancini that won for record of the year. Kindly rectify this.
I noticed this right away too as I was around during the time and presently still have the correct 45s.
I suspect there were copyright issues, but even so a disclaimer would have been appropriate.
Pretty wild to look back at this. Rarely do the Grammy's get it right. If I was ranking my Top 5 all time record of the year winners, I'd go with 1. The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - Roberta Flack, 2. Hotel California - The Eagles, 3. Clocks - Coldplay, 4. Just the Way You Are - Billy Joel, Strangers in the Night - Frank Sinatra. All 10/10 songs in my book. Crazy that the Beatles never won.
They won a few Grammy awards:
• Best New Artist, 1965
• Best Performance by a Vocal Group: A Hard Day’s Night, 1965
• The Song of the Year: Michelle, 1966
• Best Contemporary Album: Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, 1968
• Album of the Year: Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, 1968
• Abbey Road won a Grammy for Best Engineered Non-Classical Recording, 1970
"Album of the Year" is the biggest category at the Grammys and TheBeatles won - Sergeant Pepper's
MJ: only won a Grammy twice (Beat It and We Are the World)
Google: he won 23 Grammies bro!
(What's The Story) Morning Glory? should have definitely got the Grammy for 1995
Prince should take the Grammy for Sign o the times 1987
Same people that gave Milli Vanilli an award, and snubbed Metallica to give Jethro Tull the metal award.
1996??? 3:24 “Kiss from a Rose” by Seal, came out the summer of 1994.
That was very depressing
It’s like they just pick the wimpiest song that comes out. The most rocking song on here was “Beat It” by Michael Jackson of all people! I know critics really hated the great bands in their era, but god damn this is shameful. No Beatles, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Pink Floyd, etc. The most irksome was Captain & Tennille winning. Can’t do anything about modern day music, but the late ‘60 through ‘70s was stacked and they give it to the sappiest songs. I wasn’t alive then, but I know it’s greatness.
That's why people reviewing, ranking and/or enjoying artists shouldn't get his opinions based on charts and/or awards.
They only reflect popularity, which most times than not doesn't reflect quality
Adjust your title, grammy best songs in winning. Dope video bro
These are records of the year, not songs of the year. 2 completely different things
the last 7 except Flowers I had never heard or heard of before watching this. I must be old now
Flowers is the best song of 2023
Domenico Modugno didn't win Eurovision but he won a grammy lmao
I have got the original version of I will always love you by Dolly Parton who also wrote it.
Спасибо, скачал некоторые песни!
Hotel California,Rosanna,Beat It,Another Day In Paradise e Tears in Heaven tem algumas outras poucas mas de destaque e sagradas são essas.
Guess we'll forget about the grunge that carries the 90s
Flowers winning ROTY this year was a bit disappointing, it just sounds like a generic radio pop song when there was better and more unique songs out there.
Fr
Interesting. Because i really like flowers
I'm not very familiar with current music..or anything after the 1980s lol..but I thought that was a Bruno Mars song.
@@conniebauer4128 I think it’s shares similar lyrics because I thought that too
@@conniebauer4128it shares the same chords and apparently it was made that way because it was an "homage"
1967 and 1970 were spot the fuck on imo
Amen
1967 not being Aretha franklins respect is a sham
Toto IV having Rosanna totally deserved it
The fact that lizzo has as many grammyes as Michael Jackson and Phill Collins is absurd.
Whitney ❤
Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, The Beatles. These bands and artists had a huge impact and obviously accumulated tons of awards. Meanwhile, Taylor Swift wins Grammy's right, left, and centre.
Billie Eilish is the most Overrated artist ever. 5:37 & 5:43. She doesn’t sing, she Mumbles her words. This whole record of the year is a bunch of artsy-fartsy BS. It appears they just try to pick the most Avangard so I’m just a pretend that they’re “cool and hip”, & anyone else that doesn’t like it “just doesn’t understand music” she wins two years in a row on the song that’s completely Mumbles and then she wins the 2024 ask her for another song she just Mumbles.
This list shows just how crappy music tastes really are. What a crock.
Mack the Knife was the first record I ever got.
I read your description of the difference between a “record” of the year, and “song” of the year. I know this is coming from the Grammys, but is really asinine. What would make something win one versus the other? Out all the GREAT songs since 1959. It’s amazing barely any of the GREAT songs have ever won this category.
for record, i'd imagine it's a combination of the production, arrangement, mixing, and the artist's performance. whereas song of the year would be more focused on the songwriting (melody, lyrics, maybe a combination of the 2)
@@elliotanders2363 Thanks for your reply. I read your comment 3 times now. & I’m even more confused on the difference between “record” of the year, & “song” of the year. & still amazed that all these “record” of the year, the won in this video. And so many of the great songs I’ve never won. If it’s based on the criteria, you explain then and what the CZcams creator is a difference. Then “Lucy in the sky with Diamonds” and/or “A Day in the Life” I should’ve of definitely won “Record” of the year.
@@MikeCee7 Yeah I'm not sure how or why voters make their decision. But they say "Song of the Year" is a songwriters award, and "Record of the Year" I'm guessing is based on the actual recording of the song.
@@elliotanders2363 Thanks, Either way, I’m just Super Amazed & Shocked at all the great songs in the past, that never won. And all the many someone lame songs in this video that won “record” of the year.
They awards have song of the year and record of the year. I think record is for the producer and song for artist and writer.
Madness
The prestige of an award can be gauged by those who have won it in the past...er, enough said...
Dont know why is jazz pop.
Clocks is pop rock/piano rock.
Somebody That I Used to Know is art pop.
24K Magic is synth-funk.
This Is America is trap and conscious rap.
Of course some nobody band won instead of "The Doors" in 1968.
How in the proverbial f-k do you not know the 5th Dimension?
Flowers wasnt as good as some of its comp but damn it I'm happy Miley got a win under her belt
Flowers is shit
With all those rock'n'roll phenomenon in the 60s ths grammy stay traditional
There are other artists who were not awarded for the Grammy 🤔
Sailing. YES
Where are Donna Summer, Barbra Streisand and Madonna Grammies? Bruno Mars winning twice or so is frightening!
They skipped whole genres, always 15 years lagging in the development of music. Simon and Garfunkel winning so many times? What's Grammy, a private party for a group of 30?
193rd Commented 💙 : We're back again to this video after more than 4 weeks on CZcams but the origin was more than 61 years.

Higher Love, Sunny Come Home, This is America ????? Some of the winners are just …..out there.
I mean you talk about bands that changed music the most, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, how are none of them on here?! It's ridiculous!
Bonnie Raitt está infravaloradísima al igual que Belle and Sebastian
Bonnie Raitt don't got the GRAMMY for the Record of the Year, she recieved the GRAMMY for the Song of the Year.
1978 no Bee Gees Grammy and no Oscar - LOL the biggest joke in music history 😂😂😂
4:20
Also, Elvis Presley won a mere three Grammys. And none of his pop songs won. He won the Grammys for gospel songs.
Ah, The Scammys.
2004 and 2006 😍
Green day🙏
Everyone knows the Grammy's has mostly been about pop and r&b and hip-hop/rap music, not rock or heavy metal music, so it's rarely ever held my interest. There's been a few exceptions over the years though, but not for a long time.
Industry plant Billie Eyelash Grammys are so on brand.
The Grammys SUCK!!!!!
If Billie wins again I am so done
Ah, the Granny Awards!
0:16 Wrong recording; 0:27 Wrong recording.
Most of the songs I like
Phil Collins ❤
Keep in mind that the Grammys are voted upon by recording artists, not laymen like us. I would like to see NARAS, the organization that runs the Grammys, put in people's awards for the music industry.
Oh yeah. They were the same organization that allowed Jethro Tull to win the inaugural hard rock/heavy metal award as a makeup award for them.
Beegees ruled late 70s
Say what.....where is Prince ?
2021:
Who?
Never knew Sunny came Home won Grammy
Roberta Flack could win third in a row with Making Love and it would be well deserved
2021 should have been Dont start now
Considering how lame (the majority of) the winners are, I'd be insultes to win a Grammy.
Roberta Flack back to back Grammys in 73& 74? Awesome Billie Eilish back to back in the 2020s? 💩💩💩She's not worthy. Miss Flack absolutely was!😎👍👍
