The Best Is Yet to Come

Although I play it in Sinatra's key, this Coleman-Leigh song was, I believe, Tony Bennett's first big hit, and I offer it as a tribute to the late, great singer. The intro bounces between solo and main channels, with a Japanese taiko drum keeping the beat. As is often true of Cy Coleman's songs, this one goes beyond the standard 32-bar format. In fact, it segues into almost a second song, drawing upon the original melodies, but in minor mode. I appreciate Coleman, Bacharach, and Sondheim, who were true composers in the pop idiom.
