Having selma marry him was a way to tie the story in with the rest of the simpsons family as "selma is always getting married". Please take what I've said with a big grain of salt, its been a long time since I've listened to the commentaries and could be mixing it up with commentary for another episode.

I've always liked how Dr. Zaius remains staring forward impassively, be it through the nurse ape clinging to him to the other apes circling and worshiping him in-sync. The way he remains staring forward during these sequences has always amused me, for decades no less, and likely always will. Thank you, Classic Simspons....

Some guy on facebook pointed out that between the original Planet of Apes (1968) and this parody (1993) there is smaller time gap than between the firs Jurassic Park (1993) and today. And that was pointed out a couple of years ago.
I’ve watched this so many times and it literally never fails to make me smile. Plus I get the added joy of continually humming it for the next couple days
One of my favorite things is how "From Chimpan-A to Chimpanzee" is orchestrated so lightly and happily (especially at the lines "Oh my God, I was wrong! / It was Earth all along...").
I’ve rewatched this more times than I can count, and every time I find a new joke. For example, at the end, Troy saying “my always outrageous finance” then Selma being really shy and just kinda standing there is something I never picked up on. It’s underscored by homer yelling, and that just goes to show that every tiny detail of this writing was perfected
That’s such a great moment throughout the series of The Simpsons since it was during an age where we not only had Troy McClure played by Phil Hartman but also had a special guest star in that episode, an iconic name in Hollywood by the name of Jeff Goldblum. You might remember him from such classic films as Invasion Of The Body Snatchers, The Fly, Jurassic Park, and Independence Day.
No one's talking about how Dr. Zaius has a stone faced expression despite praise from his peers and the nurse ape, but smiles when he goes to comfort the dude. That's how you know, they're real friends.
Dunno why it always makes me laugh how it does when he just immediately takes “I think you’re crazy!” as a clinical diagnosis and just demands a second opinion.
For those of you who are too young or 'unread' in movies... the final line, "I love you Dr. Zaius", is an homage to the movie Spartacus in which Tony Curtis is dying, as Kurt Douglas (Spartacus) holds him, and the Tony Curtis character says to Kurt Douglas, "I love you, Spartacus." Nice.
Can you imagine the joy the writer felt when the flash of genius that is “chimpan-A to chimpanzee” popped into his head.

That’s such a great moment throughout the series of The Simpsons since it was during an age where we not only had Troy McClure played by Phil Hartman but also had a special guest star in that episode, an iconic name in Hollywood by the name of Jeff Goldblum. You might remember him from such classic films as Invasion Of The Body Snatchers, The Fly, Jurassic Park, and Independence Day.

No one's talking about how Dr. Zaius has a stone faced expression despite praise from his peers and the nurse ape, but smiles when he goes to comfort the dude. That's how you know, they're real friends.

For those of you who are too young or 'unread' in movies... the final line, "I love you Dr. Zaius", is an homage to the movie Spartacus in which Tony Curtis is dying, as Kurt Douglas (Spartacus) holds him, and the Tony Curtis character says to Kurt Douglas, "I love you, Spartacus." Nice.
