Just discovered your page today. You know what's Amazing about Tamela Mann and Leandrua Johnston, their training came through life experiences. No formal training. It's just how many of us were raised in Gospel Music.

Idk what the technical term is besides the black church/culture term... but it's often called singing with Conviction- a type of testimonial praise singing. It is almost like they are singing to God but ministering to the audience.

    • @LesageSinging

I like the word convinction. Every time I listen to a gospel singer, The emotional investment and the artistic delivery put any other genre to shame.
it's astounding to me that people can so consistently bring that level of commitment and conviction.

@@LesageSinging in my opinion, most American music genres are rips from religious music specially southern black gospel singing... from jazz to r&b to rock to pop to country music(which is really r&b with a twang to me)... the roots stem from the soulful styling of black gospel, perhaps less technical and not as astute as opera music. But anybody with a voice can sing with conviction. Della Reese even once said that people will go crazy over a singer when they sing a loud high note even if it is a struggle voice or bad note. Jazz music took that soulful church voice and missed it with jazz instrumentations and lyrics... Birth of the American Music Sound.
If you have time, I recommend this old documentary about black gospel music. It has a lot of great singers in it.

@@LesageSinging It is common to hear of “anointed” preachers, sermons, ministries, songs, etc., and to advise others to “unlock their anointing” or “walk in the anointing.” The idea is that the anointing is an outpouring of God’s power to accomplish a task through the anointed one. Anointings are said to allow a person to use his spiritual gift to a “higher degree.” Charismatics say that special anointings are received by “releasing one’s faith.”

What makes Leandria Johnson more than a great singer is that she is a brave human who is willing to share her pain, joy, and hope and her journey to be whole. She is at odds with the church/gospel community although she herself is a minister with a church. She revealed that she had a drinking problem in 2019 and her management and church did nothing to help and her manager aided and abetted her drinking before gospel performances because she had developed a bit of stage while going through a horrible divorce another gospel singer and musician. Her gospel music contracts held her to performing no matter what. --- Additonal: She writes most of her songs. The first song Jesus was written by her that is why she has such feeling through the song.

Jessica Reedy may also be an artist that you may enjoy evaluating. Very low voice that she is able to take to alto. Song suggestion from me is "Better"

Background singing in gospel is an art. We have to match many different styles. Also look at Ted Winn and Sheri Moffett Jones
