That two note interval whole step Kierra did is passed down from Karen Clark Sheard and Dr. Mattie Miss Clark staple. So many times you’ll hear her mother and grandmother use it. Definitely a family heirloom. Twinkie and Dorinda too but not as much as Karen and now Kierra.

Listen, church musicians and singers get thrown in the fire lol. I started by playing during offering and they didn’t really care I didn’t know what I was doing. They wanted me to get comfortable with my gift and I am so thankful they gave me the space and grace to grow musically

10:40 i think that's the best way to sing, really. i never went to classes, was never in chorus, I just sang. Then i learned my voice. I knew what I wanted to improve on and looked for information I needed to improve my technique.
I just struggle with confidence, which is why i wish i was sorta of "forced" to sing at church, yknow? Because i know what I'm capable of because I've hear myself do these things, but doing it in front of an audience can he nerve-racking! Because all of a sudden you don't feel as good as you though you were out of fear of being seen as too confident with little skill to justify it. I'm hoping to get over that fear so I can sing with others how I sing by myself

Interesting to see you make the Cissy and Tramaine comparison. Many make the obvious Tramaine & Whitney connection but the are definitely T&C similarities that stuck out to me as well. In regards to inflections, HV choices, and even the adlibs - (specifically in live performances of a younger Cissy)
Been waiting on something on Tramaine, one of my favorites. Would love your analysis on Walter and/or any of the Hawkins. They just had a special something: talent, grace, humility,. you couldn't deny! And it lasted for DECADES!
I love the intentional, intelligent way you analyze these videos across the spectrum of music, Jaron. It's incredible. I love the fact that you used the word diphthong, too. It's a great way to describe the sound, that's formed from 2 vowels.

I was in the youth choir at Calvary Baptist Church Toledo, OH in the 70’s and Shirley Murdoch was about same age (15) and would sing from the pews at any of our songs. She was awesome and clearly talented. I’m sure those moments encouraged her to become a member of our choir. There were many great choirs in the baptist community. And we had the best choir in the city during that time. Im not a singer but I sing around the house & in my car all the time. I attributed it to (and loved) growing up in church and singing all the great songs…and I still do. I will always love God’s music❤🙏🏾❤
