I was laughing out loud at the Dr. Brown was being so exaggeratedly obtuse with his tactics. It's out of character, but great for a laugh given the non-serious subject.
Dr. Heiser is brilliant, but he forgot the most obvious aspect: the hotdog is not made with two pieces of bread that are required for a sandwich, but rather with one. A sandwich requires two independent slices of bread and thus a hotdog is not a sandwich. A hoagie is also not a sandwich.
Interesting thing though, I googled "hoagie" and the first two words of the definition are literally "a sandwich". All that is needed for a thing to be considered "sandwiched" is that it is pressed between two other things. In the case of a hoagie the ingredients are sandwiched between two halves of a loaf of bread. Therefore a hoagie by definition is a sandwich. A hotdog becomes more difficult to classify, however, when you point out that if a hotdog were held upside down the contents would most likely topple out and fall onto the floor. A truly sandwiched object, it could be argued, would stay in place even when faced with the force of gravity. However, we do have other instances of sandwiches that would also break this rule, such as the meatball sub.
The use of the word “ hoagie “ is an excuse to hide Dr. Brown error, Dr. Brown is unintentionally admitting his error by using both hands describing a sandwich. It take’s 3 layer’s to create a sandwich not 2. In reality a hot dog is a pita bread bend into something.
Biggest flaw in Dr. Browns argument, is that a hotdog does not have "two pieces of bread with something in the middle." A hotdog bun is *one* piece of bread. Additionally, a sandwich is stacked vertically, universally. The mono-bread of a hotdog bun is breaded on the sides, not the tops. This also disqualifies the mono-bread of a hotdog bun from being categorized as an Open Face Sandwich, because even that is vertically oriented.
I heard that the orgin of the sandwich was a General Sandwich who was busy one day fighting a battle or something and he said, "Just put some meat between two slices of bread and give it to me." Definition: Meat between two pieces of bread.
Actually it was the Earl of Sandwich, a place in East Sussex, England, UK. He was playing cards and didn't a) want to leave the table, and b) get his gloves dirty. Sandwiches are named not for a person but a town.
When you order a sandwich from SubWay they use one piece of bread that they split apart, but not into 2 pieces. Are you gonna tell me those aren't sandwiches?
haha! (I thought Dr Heiser might have "parsed" his arguments a little better) God bless both of you! This took me by surprise...beautiful brothers in Christ and loved by the Church...peace!
Hahaha!!!! This is incredible! Two titans facing off. I’ve actually been persuaded. I started off on Dr Heiser’s side, but I think Dr Brown may have pulled me over to his side, even though I’m not comfortable with the idea.
To settle the debate. Technically a hot dog is a sandwich even though it doesnt fit the traditional view culturally that we have of sandwiches. A Penguin is a bird, it just doesn't fit the entire picture we have in our head when the word bird is used. First go to thought is not a flightless bird. It is nonetheless a bird. So while I do not think of a hot dog as a sandwich becomes irrelevant because technically it is because it meets the minimum requirement of being such. Loved the debate! ❤
My open letter to Dr. Micheal Brown. You make the correct assessment that a sandwich is indeed “two pieces of bread with food in the middle”. What you fail to recognize is the higher question: “How does one define “food”? So yes. A sandwich is two pieces of bread with food in the middle. But a hotdog is (arguably) not food. Therefore a hotdog is not a sandwich. - Adam.
I laughed hard when I came across this. We have had a running between myself, my wife and the kids if you can have a salad for breakfast...or rather can a salad be considered breakfast food, and as such would an omelet with vegetables be considered a salad. Very strong opinions on this from my wife to the negative. She is currently considering if we need marriage counseling.
Dr. Brown, Your entire argument seems to be based upon the assertion that the definition of a sandwich is food between two pieces of bread. If we assume arguendo that the definition is correct you have still not established that a hotdog is a sandwich. The assumption that a hotdog is food has no basis in fact.
No one comments on this no more but now lets think of how we could put Jordan Bernt Peterson and Jonathan Pageu, with Dr.Michael Heiser and Dr Michael Brown Amazing!
Seeing this Dec 2023 for the first time. What a fun video. 👏 Dr. Heiser, I can almost hear your laugh from heaven 😊 learning the answers to all of the things that you still questioned, telling Capital G God oh, I didn’t realize that - and yes! I was right about this. 🕊️
Hot dogs are not TWO pieces of bread. A hot dog bun is one piece of bread. In fact, even when using a piece of “sandwich” bread for a hot dog, you usually fold it unlike other “sandwiches”. Hot Dog! You should have had me on the debate!
A hotdog "hybridizes" the classical, canonical sandwich structure. The confusion here is that we are only looking at the hotdog sandwich from the outside, in, and not investigating this hybridized form from the inside out. If we start from the inside to look at a hotdog intrinsically and find that there is non-meat/grain filler comprising its internal material matrix, then we may make the case that what might have been considered hybridized was in fact not a sandwich at all.
Dr. Brown; If a sandwich consists of 'two' pieces of bread with food in the middle (BTW, the bread is also food) - note that a hotdog bun is a 'one' piece item - it does not come in two pieces of bread like a sandwich, as you say - therefore a hotdog can't be a sandwich, by your repeated definition!
The bread in a hotdog isn’t two separate pieces of bread. The hotdog is a hotdog bun where meat is inserted into the bread. Would you call a gyro a sandwich? Would you can a burrito a sandwich?
Definition Sandwich - an item of food consisting of two pieces of bread with meat, cheese, or other filling between them, eaten as a light meal. The shape is not the controlling factor (hamburgers are round, and are considered sandwiches) A hot dog is defined by the sausage, not the bread it is served on. Hot dog - a frankfurter, especially one served hot in a long, soft roll and topped with various condiments. So a hot dog is (but doesn't have to be) served in a single piece of bread - a roll. Conceivably, you could make a "hot dog" sandwich with a weenie and two pieces of bread, but the traditional serving style precludes this over generalization that a "hot dog is a sandwich" because it is not served between two pieces of bread.
Love it! Absolutely amusing! But I am looking forward to hearing these two have some SERIOUS discussions on the Bible! _Obviously, a hotdog on bread is a sandwich._ ...and if you are in the desert and have no food, you can always eat the sand-which is there!
A sandwich consist of a meat or some kind of substance that is sandwiched between two pieces of bread. Sandwich would indicate something that is sandwiched between something. A hotdog basically lays on top of the bun and if it’s squeezed I guess you could say it’s sandwiched between it but the way that it normally sits in it’s a bun I would not call it a sandwich.
Brown was very liberal here. Italians will launch a world war if you call spaghetti in bread a sandwich. I'm gonna miss Heiser so much until we catch up to him. Thank you for sharing, Dr. Brown!
Perhaps we should ask the original author of the sandwich, aka the Earl of Sandwich, but unfortunately he is not available for comment, so we have no original sources.
With this reasoning the hot dog can also be a taco. In my country a traditional sandwich is one slice of bread and topping on it, but no other bread. So.... Hot dog, taco, sandwich (the two bun version) is a kind of fast food, a category. If you go to a shop and ask for one of these, you'll not get the other ... 🙂
Hotdog buns are technically one piece of bread as it is connected; therefore, since it is one piece, it cannot be a sandwich.
Open-face sandwich maybe? 🤔
Nailed it
That's what I was basically yelling at my phone while Dr. Brown was talking lol!
Thinking the same thing!!
Like a subway SANDWICH
Never would I EVER call a hotdog a sandwich. Dr. Heiser wins!💪😉
It is a sandwich.
yes you make a powerfully cogent argument (both of you) 🙄
This is exactly the debate I wanted between these two.
This is the greatest debate EVER!
😂😂😂
“I didn’t interrupt you brother!!” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Two of my FAVOURITE theologians in one video, so great they know each other and tag team! 👌🏾
Yes, now imagine Jordan Peterson and Jonathan Pageu there!
Despite Dr. Brown making several good points, Dr. Heiser is on the right side of history in this argument.
I'm so stressed...now...I just don't know what to believe...!!! LOL
NEW FAVORITE DEBATE! (X)
We need humor in the midst of such serous times! I try to include laughs I each of my videos too. Thanks guys!
This is what I took from this video! Great observation!
You're a smart person.
@@SOULSafeProductionZ thanks! Blessings!

Yup. Heiser missed an opportunity on this one. I thought the same thing.
Monobread! 🤣

That is a Sub
Short for submarine sandwich.
@@tomgeorge7281 boom. Case closed
Subway's bread always splits apart so it becomes two pieces of bread. All sub sandwiches do that. Therefore hotdogs are still not sandwiches lol
Hotdogs work in slice bread also .... so basicly a sandwhich ... add mustard please
haha! (I thought Dr Heiser might have "parsed" his arguments a little better) God bless both of you! This took me by surprise...beautiful brothers in Christ and loved by the Church...peace!
Up until this moment, Dr. Brown has been my favorite cultural apologist. This is the great falling away.
What do you mean
I really hope you're joking
I hope this is all that divides these two brothers. I love listening to both.
The real question on my mind is...”Is it a kosher hotdog?”
I'd like the ham sandwich on the Jewish Rye please.
Are you asking if it is circumcised?
I agree with Heizer, but man did he not come prepared for this debate. Reluctantly, Brown won the debate, but he is wrong.
Hahaha!!!!
This is incredible! Two titans facing off.
I’ve actually been persuaded. I started off on Dr Heiser’s side, but I think Dr Brown may have pulled me over to his side, even though I’m not comfortable with the idea.
Don't you dare! Lol 😋

Seen Dr. Heiser and Dr.Brown on such debate is such a fresh air. I think the audience wins 👌🏻
“Canonical Shape!”
Clearly, Dr. Heiser won the debate. LOL!
So funny haha! “Where’s the text!?” 😂

FUN video. ♡ Xoxoxo prayers with Dr. Heiser's family since his passing...
That was fun... btw Dr Michael won, easily and without a doubt.
Pray for healing of Dr.Michael S.Heiser 's cancer !

When I was a kid, we ate hotdogs on sandwich bread, so hotdogs are a hybrid.
Hot dogs are NOT sandwiches! Great debate.
No one comments on this no more but now lets think of how we could put Jordan Bernt Peterson and Jonathan Pageu, with Dr.Michael Heiser and Dr Michael Brown Amazing!

Hot dogs come on a single piece of bread, not two
Hey y'all are making me hungry!
Best debate ever!

Let’s hear it for canonical shape!
Hey! in Mexico we got hot dogs, sandwiches and tortas, which is a more orthodox way to view it, a gastronomic trinity.
The bread in a hotdog isn’t two separate pieces of bread. The hotdog is a hotdog bun where meat is inserted into the bread. Would you call a gyro a sandwich? Would you can a burrito a sandwich?

When Dr. Brown said “Where’s the text!?!” I lost it 😂🤣😂 Dr. Brown wins
TO EACH HIS OWN
Beautiful and vital discussion 😂
This is the only debate that I've seen my gifted brother Michael Brown lose. :)
Definition
Sandwich - an item of food consisting of two pieces of bread with meat, cheese, or other filling between them, eaten as a light meal.
The shape is not the controlling factor (hamburgers are round, and are considered sandwiches)
A hot dog is defined by the sausage, not the bread it is served on.
Hot dog - a frankfurter, especially one served hot in a long, soft roll and topped with various condiments.
So a hot dog is (but doesn't have to be) served in a single piece of bread - a roll.
Conceivably, you could make a "hot dog" sandwich with a weenie and two pieces of bread, but the traditional serving style precludes this over generalization that a "hot dog is a sandwich" because it is not served between two pieces of bread.
this was great
Dr Brown yay👍love you both wonderful men of God
A hotdog is not a sandwich! I’m with Dr. Michael Heiser on this!!
That was fantastic guys 😆 🤣 😂
So glad you enjoyed it!
The issue is that we all have biases on this topic, how can we decide who is right with our own pre-suppositions clouding our judgement?
Just subscribed doc... This was absolutely great lol but you both made great points 🧐😆😆😆
This is great. Thanks for this show.
Love it! Absolutely amusing!
But I am looking forward to hearing these two have some SERIOUS discussions on the Bible!
_Obviously, a hotdog on bread is a sandwich._
...and if you are in the desert and have no food, you can always eat the sand-which is there!
A hot dog is not between two pieces of bread, it is a tube of seasoned meat gently nestled in a single piece of bread.
Dr Heiser won. If a hot dog is a sandwich, so is a cheeseburger.
Ha ha ha “I didn’t interrupt you brother!” Ha ha ha show me the text…lol 😂 “it violates the canonical laws of the sandwich”!
I usually don't agree with Dr. Brown, but here he's right.
Made my day. Thanks guys.
Almost died at Dr Brown's rapid fire 🤣🤣🤣
Please tell me what AWKNG means??? Sincere question, I can't figure it out. AWKNG????
will this be a continuing series?
I don't 🤔of a hotdogs as being a sandwich...but I would say Dr Brown's redoric won the debate.
You guys are great!
Would you host Sir Anthony F. Buzzard?
The Earl of Sandwich “Bring me something (meat) between 2 pieces of bread.” - invention of sandwich
I would expect Dr Heiser to win any debate between these two fine brothers and he certainly did win this one.
Good one between both legends
A hotdog bun is one piece of bread. It’s more in line with a taco than a sandwich.
I love it. What a great way to simply have some fun. You guys are great. I miss Dr. Heiser already.
Technically a hotdog can be a sandwich, but a sandwich can never be a hotdog 🌭 🤯🤯🤯
Hotdog = bland subway SANDWICH
I'm with Dr Heiser, not a sandwich. A hotdog bun isn't even 2 pieces of bread, it's one!! Miss you Dr Heiser. Thank you for all the teachings!
Anything I can eat is good 👍 they both qualify!
Brown was very liberal here. Italians will launch a world war if you call spaghetti in bread a sandwich. I'm gonna miss Heiser so much until we catch up to him. Thank you for sharing, Dr. Brown!
Oh the Humanity!!!
Perhaps we should ask the original author of the sandwich, aka the Earl of Sandwich, but unfortunately he is not available for comment, so we have no original sources.
Brilliant!
It’s ONE piece of bread. A sandwich has to have at least two pieces of bread. A hotdog is NOT a sandwich!
I thought they were going to debate the Designated Hitter rule.
Maybe the best way to answer that per ASOT is... It's possible but not plausible.
Every time I have asked for a sandwich I have never been givin a hot dog
This is what I love two repectable Christian scholars I love just having fun.
Heiser had me laughing at 1:03 "does not fit the canonical shape." 😆🤣🤣
With this reasoning the hot dog can also be a taco.
In my country a traditional sandwich is one slice of bread and topping on it, but no other bread. So.... Hot dog, taco, sandwich (the two bun version) is a kind of fast food, a category. If you go to a shop and ask for one of these, you'll not get the other ... 🙂
A hotdog is NOT a sandwich, and nor is a taco.
"Give me a hotdog sandwich" no one ever said
A hot fog is closer to a pita than a sandwich because it’s not 2 pieces of bread, but 1 with a split in the middle. Gotta go with Mike!
Great debate. Agree with Dr Heiser, a hotdog is a thing all its own, it is NOT a sandwich.
