Exodus - Questions on laws, the Tabernacle, the Golden Calf and God's Glory with Dr. Carmen Imes
In our latest “Ask a Scholar” episode, we are honored to feature an enlightening discussion with our special guest, Dr. Carmen Joy Imes, Biblical Scholar, as she shares intriguing aspects of the Book of Exodus focusing on the laws that guided the Israelites, the golden calf, the manifestation of God’s glory, and more. Dr. Imes brings her extensive Bible study expertise, providing deep insights and thoughtful interpretations of these ancient scriptures. This enriching conversation bridges historical context and contemporary relevance. Dr. Carmen Imes emphasizes the significance of the Sabbath and festivals. She explains that the laws given serve a unique purpose. They are not prerequisites for salvation but guidelines for living a life that reflects the identity and values of the Jewish people, who had already been delivered from slavery in Egypt. This distinction underscores that the law is meant to shape a community’s way of life rather than earn divine favor. Dr. Imes highlighted the Sabbath as a tremendous gift and pointed out that this day of rest is a divine provision that allows individuals to step back from their labor, offering them the opportunity to recharge and reconnect with their loved ones and with God.
Furthermore, the festivals keep the stories of the Jewish faith alive. These celebrations transmit the history, values, and identity of the Jewish people from one generation to the next. Dr. Imes also emphasizes the significance of the items, underscoring the principle that God is worthy of our best. The details and instructions for the construction and arrangement underscore the majesty and sacredness of God’s holy presence. Each piece of furniture within the Tabernacle has a distinct function, reflecting different aspects of worship and relationship with God. The bronze laver used for the purification of priests, signifies the necessity of being clean before approaching the divine. The golden lampstand signifies coming into the light of God’s presence. The table with twelve loaves of bread symbolizes the twelve tribes of Israel, indicating their constant fellowship with God and His provision for them. These elements collectively highlight the need for order, reverence, and purity in worship. The concept of the glory of God, often visualized as an awe-inspiring brightness or a radiant glow, is much more than a physical phenomenon.
When Moses asks to see God’s glory, he is yearning for a deeper understanding and encounter with God’s divine essence and presence. It is symbolized by a cloud of fire, a manifestation that combines both mystery and majesty. This depiction aligns with the ancient understanding of glory, implying that God is supremely worthy of honor and reverence. Heiser was WRONG with Psalm 82 and his divine council of gods Israel are the "gods" in Psalm 82, the "gods" are human NOT nonhuman like this Heiser guy promoted. Israel was unique from the pagan nations that surrounded them, Israel had the law of God, 10 commandment, prophets and a Levitical priesthood. Since Israel had the law of God, it put Israel in the position of being "gods," becuase God chose them, Israel was God's chosen people. Psalm 82:6 I said, “You are gods, sons of the Most High, all of you; John 10: 34-35 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, “You are gods” ’? 35 If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken)," 1. >>>>"I said, “You are gods” >>>>>ONCE by the God (Father) in Psalm 82. Aspaph is the Author and Psalmist of Psalm 82. Prophets of the Old Testament like Asaph the "word of the Lord" would come to Prophets like Asaph. Prophets were the "Voice" of God. God (Father) would communicate His words through the prophets, God does that here in Psalm 82:6 I said, “You are gods, sons of the Most High, all of you;">>>>>>>>Israel, Psalm 82 uses the word "all". This clearly is not about a bunch of watchers/super angels of a divine council. The Psalms were written to and for Israel. 2. SECOND time Jesus in John 10: 34 Repeats >>>> ‘I said, “You are gods” <<<<< Jesus is addressing humans in this text, the humans are Israel, we know that, becasue the text in John 10:34-35 Jesus also tells us in scripture in John 10: 34-35 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, “You are gods” ’? 35 If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken)," A few verses before Jesus says to His audience is John 10:30 "I and the Father are one." This points to the Trintiy as One, the Trinity is One and the Same God made up of THREE persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In this part of scripture are Two persons of God, the Father and the Son. That is why you Pair up " I said, “You are gods" in Psalm 82:6 and John 10:34 The law Jesus is talking about is the "law" God gave Moses in verse 34 and in verse 35 "gods" (Israel) is to the word of God came, which would be prophets of the OT, like Moses, Asaph, and ect.. Okay lets look into this. People like Mike Heiser beleived that the audience and listeners (gods/elohim/sons) of Psalm 82 is referring to nonhuman angelic spirit beings/super angels of a divne council being addressed and talked to in the heavens in the spiritual realm. So that would mean that Jesus would be in the heavens in the spiritual realm addressing His audience in John 10: 34, that makes ZERO sense and No logic!!! Very Clear that Jesus in John 10 and all of the NT Jesus is in the Physical realm addressing humans, so that would mean that Humans are being addressed in Psalm 82 in the physical realm, Heiser taught that Pslam 82 is in the spiritual realm about a bunch of non human spirit beings (non human super angels) totally false, that is why Jesus answers the question of the "gods" of Psalm 82 in John 10, Hesier blindly oppossed Jesus, which is anti-Christ. Lets's look at Strongs Concordance for more reference that Israel are the "gods" of Psalm 82 The name Israel ends with an "El/el" which means of God/god. The word Elohim/eloihm starts with an "el" and Israel ends with an "el". Transliteration: el Phonetic Spelling: (ale) Original Word: אֵל Part of Speech: Noun Masculine Definition: God (El/Elohim, in pl. gods (el) Israel also literally means, “One who struggles with God.” Definition "God strives," another name of Jacob and his descendents Hebrew: Strongs >>3478. Yisrael The word “Israel” in Hebrew is spelled ישראל and pronounced “Yisra’el”. It is a combination of two Hebrew words: “yashar” which means “straight” or “upright”, and “el” which means “God” in pl. gods (el). Together, “Israel” means “one who struggles with God” or “God contends”. In the Hebrew Bible, Israel was the name given to Jacob after he wrestled with an angel of God (Genesis 32:28). Later, it became the name of the Israelite people and the modern State of Israel. Clearly Israel are the "gods" of Psalm 82 God/Elohim woujld be scolding them, Israel was always contending with God/Elohim in the OT, funny thing is, Christians do the same thing, contending with God. Something else to point out since Israel are the "gods" of Psalm 82. The people of the nation of Israel would sing the Psalms, really no different than today when a Christians go to church Hymns and worship songs are sang, so I really hard to believe the Heiser's "gods"/divine council made up of a bunch of watchers/super angels sang the Psalms. Another point is since Israel was God's chosen people, they had the Law, word of the Lord, prophets of God, ect... it elavated them to represent God different from the surrounding pagan nations, that is why Israel (Jacob's decendents) are called "gods" both in Psalm 82 and then by Jesus in John 10, of course Jesus was addressing a small group of Israelites in John 10, not "all" of Israel like in Psalm 82. Remember Israel would sing these Psalms and were the chosen people. Israel as a son>>>>> Exodus 4:22 You are to say to Pharaoh, ‘This is what the Lord says: “Israel is my firstborn son." If you know your bible Jacob is Israel and there would be 12 sons borns to Jacob, which make up the 12 tribes of Israel. When a person reads Psalm 82:6 when it mentions "sons" it is referring to the 12 tribes of Israel in the physical world. In reality what a person can get from scripture is that Jesus tells us who the "gods/elohim" are in Psalm 82 when we read John 10 34-35. Jesus is the One who fulfills the words of the prophets from the OT in the NT, that is why Jesus REPEATED the exact words " I said, “You are gods, from Psalm 82 (God/Father) in John 10 (God/Son). Something else to Notice in Psalm 82:6 I said, “You are gods, sons of the Most High, ALL of you;" Notice the word "ALL" at the end of the verse, the "ALL" is refering to "ALL" of Israel. The gods/elohim/divine council in Psalm 82 are not disembodied spirits, angelic or nonhuman spirit beings, they are Israel, all of Israel (Jacob's descendents) would be human, which includes judges, elders, rulers, kings, and the common Isrealite citizen.

So God gave humans His image and then held them accountable for the evil that resulted from beings that were not sufficient to handle the image? That's like giving a 5 year old a loaded AR-15 in a group of people with a full clip and no safety and then blaming the 5 year old for the deaths and injuries that follow.

I'm trying to figure out what to DO with this. When Heiser says we need to be paying attention because the sky might be telling us what God is going to do, what does that mean practically? What would be a contemporary type example of God telling us something He is about to do via the objects in the sky?

Money and false prophests go hand in hand. In these final days, we are told all about, from Holy Scripture, the devices false prophets use to squeeze a dollar out of Bible ignorant "believers." 2Tim.3:1-7 for example. Vs. in the KJV... "highminded/ tuphóō." " To swell or inflate with pride." They have a need to flash credentials in front of their hearers of some seminary achievement , which results only in denominational traditions being preached, as though they are above you, which makes you automatically lower in wisdom and the knowledge of God. Beware that the term "scholar" is a synonym for "student"... a humble student of Holy Scripture receives the knowledge of God, the Mt.11:25 principle.

Bible, Inerrancy of Latter-day Saints revere the Bible. They study it and believe it to be the word of God. However, they do not believe the Bible, as it is currently available, is without error. Joseph Smith commented, “I believe the Bible as it read when it came from the pen of the original writers” (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith, chapter 17). The Latter-day Saints have a great reverence and love for the Bible. They study it and try to live its teachings. They treasure its witness of the life and mission of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Prophet Joseph Smith studied the Bible all his life, and he taught its precepts. He testified that a person who can “mark the power of Omnipotence, inscribed upon the heavens, can also see God’s own handwriting in the sacred volume: and he who reads it oftenest will like it best, and he who is acquainted with it, will know the hand [of the Lord] wherever he can see it” (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, 56). As the Bible was compiled, organized, translated, and transcribed, many errors entered the text. The existence of such errors becomes apparent when one considers the numerous and often conflicting translations of the Bible in existence today. Careful students of the Bible are often puzzled by apparent contradictions and omissions. Many people have also been curious about references by biblical prophets to books or scriptural passages that are not currently in the Bible. In addition to the Bible, Latter-day Saints reverence and study the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, the Pearl of Great Price, and the words of modern prophets and apostles. All these sources of eternal truth work together to establish, clarify, and testify of the plan of our Heavenly Father and to bring people unto Jesus Christ. Latter-day Saints believe in an open scriptural canon, which means that there are other books of scripture besides the Bible (such as the Book of Mormon) and that God continues to reveal His word through living prophets. The argument is often made that to be a Christian means to assent to the principle of sola scriptura, or the self-sufficiency of the Bible. But to claim that the Bible is the final word of God-more specifically, the final written word of God-is to claim more for the Bible than it claims for itself. Nowhere does the Bible proclaim that all revelations from God would be gathered into a single volume to be forever closed and that no further scriptural revelation could be received. The Bible is not God’s final revelation to humanity, however, and neither is this collection of sacred writings complete. The Bible itself speaks of other authoritative books of scripture, including books of Jasher, Nathan the prophet and of Jehu and Enoch, the prophecy of Ahijah, the visions of Iddo the seer, the Sticks of Joseph and Judah, and even missing epistles of Paul.

There were no "three" rebellions. The last alleged rebellion of Deut. 32:8-9 was made up of whole cloth by Heiser and his misreading of the text. Heiser's "divine council" theology is flawed because he twisted or otherwise distorted key passages, such as Psalm 82, Deuteronomy 32:8, 4:19, and others. Psalm 82 is about human judges, not alleged and speculative "divine beings," since we have no Scripture showing "divine beings" engaging in judging human activity as shown in verses 2-4. It's human judges who have been guilty of what verses 2-4 claim. I recommend reading the book "The Unbiblical Realm: Refuting the Divine Council of Michael Heiser’s Deuteronomy 32 Worldview" by Heath Henning. Those interested in videos on this topic can check out my series called "The UnBiblical Realm: Refuting Michael Heiser's Divine Council w/Heath Henning. Heiser used his liberal education and imported the "divine council" idea into his evangelical views, and has duped the evangelical world into accepting liberal theology cloaked in evangelical garb.

The more I'm exposed to American Evangelical religious lifestyle, the more I just don't understand it. I wonder if those in it recognise how strange the vocabulary is, the pressure to identify as something through behaviour, or to justify identy via behaviour - I just don't get it. It's very odd to me. Australia has the problem of secularising the church into a cultural institution, Americans seem to want a romantic pseudomystical identity.

Are you following the monthly reading plans on the Awkng website? The questions have been submitted by readers participating in the monthly reading through a book of the Bible. This month will be Leviticus & the reading plans & study guides are free. Last month was Exodus. Most Evangelical churches do not pay attention to Jewish customs. A few may do a seder meal for Passover - it's a bit of a novelty really. There's no rule that Christians must observe any Jewish traditions but they can if they want to. I know of someone who grew up in church that did observe those traditions & it was treated very legalistically. He later moved into charismatic churches - as a reaction probably to that legalistic view. The Baptist format of church service (sermon centered + worship) is very common in US & I think people look for traditions to nourish this bare bones church service. Strip out all symbols & people will miss them! Churches who still follow liturgical tradition have a calendar of traditions to satisfy that need for symbolism & ritual.

So thankful Jesus Christ revealed his kingdom is here and coming through his sacrifice, tearing the curtain for an invitation for all to be family. We can all now carry a mirror and reflect the image of God that his son revealed to us.

Of course knowledge of what could happen, all possible outcomes, is not predestination. David asked if he should go and rescue the city of Keilah. God did not tell him what would happen after they defeated the Philistines. I think if anything this demonstrates we need to be in communion more with God through scripture and prayer. David and his men knew they were safe in Judah but lingered in Keilah instead of returning once they had defeated the Philistines. God has a plan and it leaves a lot of wiggle room for the actions of mankind, but God's plan will not be thwarted by anyone (spirit or man).

Dr. Brown, l know you're anti-gay and l understand how most Christians today are because of the 7 "clobber" passages. I was healed of schizophrenia in 1982 while in a mental hospital. I thought l was Jesus and one night asked a Christian lady in our group therapy session if she thought l was Jesus and she said, " You can't be Jesus, Jesus was perfect." I didn't grow up in church so only had a passing understanding of who He was. I knew myself, though, and knew I wasn't perfect. I went to my room, cried and prayed (can't remember what l prayed) and woke up in my right mind. Jesus healed me of schizophrenia. Fast forward 10 years and I'm still gay. Why won't God heal me? Why? ! You can't fix what's not broken. What's broken is the Holy Word of God. 1946themovie proves the Bible is not anti-gay. It’s clearly anti-hate (John 15-16, "This is my command: LOVE ONE ANOTHER." Anti-gay and anti-choice are ANTI-CHRIST lies. Matthew 7? Romans 2? The mistranslation of the bible has killed Christianity. Right-wing bigots are NOT FOLLOWING JESUS! Politics of hate and lies have destroyed the church. Rev 13:11-16 is America. Two horns "like a lamb" are right-wing Catholics and Christians being used by the GOP of lies, bigotry, violence, and greed. 2Thess2:11 is here. Trump is lawless. The church is fallen. Revelation 18:4 is calling. STOP HURTING PEOPLE FOR JESUS! THAT'S BLASPHEMY OF HIS SPIRIT OF LOVE! America will soon burn because apostate Christians lifted EVIL in His Name. America burns then it's Iran's turn (Zechariah 14). The church on the right is lost to bigotry, the left to idolatry. The Image of the Beast is right in front of you. Compare Exodus 13:16, Rev 13:16 & Matt 5:29. The Mark of the Beast is SIN. The only way to wash it off is faith in Jesus AND LIVING IN HIS TRUTH AND LOVE! 1John3:23 sums up Christianity. Sadly, 1John4:20 is where most right-wing Christians & Catholics live. Matthew 19:11-12 Jesus said we're born this way. What kind of man doesn't marry women because of how they're born? It's not rocket science to know hate is not of God. My God is Jesus, His law is love. Turn off the world and turn on Jesus! Repent of your HATE, murderers!
