The British fighter that showed up too late | Westland Wyvern | History in the Dark

- The Westland Wyvern was a fighter aircraft developed for the Royal Navy. Distinctive for their use of a turboprop engine and contra-rotating propellers, these innovations were not enough to extend their service life due to the advent of jets.

I wasn't sure if I heard you mention that the Wyvern served during the Suez Crisis and one was even involved in friendly fire with some Royal Marines.
I love the wyvern the way it looks and the guns on it it has always been one of my favorite planes since I was a kid
Lovely plane, the Wyvern - looked a beast
1949 was the year the F-101 Voodoo design was first proposed (and as a mock-up, I believe)
One of my personal favourites, gotta love that big fin!
Fleet air Arm museum is in Yo-vill-ton
It would have been a nightmare trying to cool the planned H-block 24-cylinder engine buried mid-fuselage.
Multi role strike fighter.
How about talking about the Fokker DXXI; One of Fokker's final fighter warplanes? There's also the torpedo bomber T VIII.
You could also mention how the good looking Gloster Gauntlet led to the cooler looking Gloster Gladiator.
Looks a lot like an AT-802 Skywarden, for what the US calls armed overwatch missions.
It was quite an achievement to give something 3500 hp yet make it 50mph slower than the 2000hp Fury and Sea Fire that preceded it.
Never underestimate these people
Still got to do more than Ryan XF2R Dark Shark and Fairey Spearfish.
For the power at its disposal, it wasn't all that fast
For a good coverage of the Wyvern, see Tony Butler's "Propellor Twilight", which covers the last generation of British prop-driven fighters and fighter-bombers. I highly recommend thia book.
I wonder if the oversised rudder is a part of an well executed aerodynamic design, or a patch to make up for the opposite.
Both the Wyvern and Backburn Firebrand had these oversized fins, the reason being that as aircraft weights went up whilst British Carriers did not, meant they were given heavily flapped wings to minimise approach speed. On the Wyvern still found to be a little under ruddered hence they added some extra fins to the tailplane as that was limited in height by the night of the hangar deck. However the drag of these big fins is why both the Firebrand and Wyvern had modest top speeds relative to their power.
@@grahamariss2111 Thank you for sharing your knowlegde, it is very appriciated.
When I think of the Wyvern I'm thinking of Ace Combat 7 Skies Unknown.
Around 7:30 I started to hear war thunder music
0:27 a few seconds lost in the edit?
9:44 Yo-vil-tun.
"...Operation Musketeer - which was an armed response (?) to the Suez Crisis....", well, I guess that's a way to put it. Depends on where and how the "crisis" started 😇
YES. A RESPONSE. DEFINITELY. THAT'S THEIR STORY AND THEY'RE STICKING TO IT.
@@HistoryintheDark
Oh, I don't doubt that THEY see it that way. Question remains what defines how the crisis started I guess. The nationalization of the Suez Canal by Egypt or the attempt to secure its control through force by Britain, France and Israel?
My reaction as a War Thunder player:

It was so ugly it didn't fly, it repelled the ground!
Yeovilton = Yo-vil-ton. Just another wonderful English place name that no one knows how to pronounce 😂😂😂
Beat me too it.
He said all the letters, Yeovelten. lol
