I wanted to tell you i found the answer to the question i asked you about where to get resources that can teach me how to get a rich traditional look in my photshop paintings. its not something i could find in a book or that was really taught anywhere. i came across it through painting every day and through trial and error my understanding grew. so i know now what I need to do :)

Compare yourself with yourself, I believe that would be a good/brief video series that you do; the reworking of old work and expanding on the "the good nugget" within it. It will also send you on one heck of a nostalgia trip!

About the "timelapse chats": I am a film student and I have little to no clue about painting so hearing your commentary on how you approach painting as a whole instead of focusing on that specific painting is much more helpfull and enjoyable to me (I've always had an interest in all forms of visual arts). I haven't done an oil painting since high school. I had my favorite hanged up on my wall. (My mom is mentally unstable) she took it done when she came to visit...... ripped it apart and thrown it away. Insert grief. I've been thinking about redoing it. I thought I'd never get what I felt painting it the first time but it might come out even better if I try to revive it ^^ Thank you. Can't wait for your next video ^^

Would love to see some shots of your palette and some commentary on whether / how you mix colors ahead / keep your light / dark brushes separate etc and how you focus on value over color!
Hi Cynthia, i liked this video a lot. The chat and general thoughts behind the painting process is really something i think a lot of artists can connect to. On the topic of comparing to our heroes i think there's a positive aspect to it. Of course there is this toxic behavior which consist of downgrading yourself in front of such artists but it helped me to grow when i considered these people as landmarks or role model. The road to find your own self through art requires a shit ton of time and dedication and more than often i found myself lost and helpless (whether it was in front of a crappy artwork or even just going through an art realated mental breakdown). During these periods of time i thought about those people (who i clearly don't know as they are more ideas than real persons...especially for the dead ones, unless you have a ouija borad but this is another topic) wondering to myself: "what did X would have done here?" This moral compass guided me to where i am now, and helped me to grow confidence into my own craft (even if there's still a long road to go) because i knew these heroes shadows where behind be. It's almost the "fake it until you make it". I hope it make sense :), thanks again for sharing these ideas with us and i hope to see more of your oil work very soon, it's always inspiring and motivating!

Your videos and chats are so informative I feel like you're a breath of fresh air in terms of CZcams art tutorials. I find many just illustrate the process without explaining anything. I can see what's happening in them but not really understanding why the artists are doing what they do. I don't have oils but I do have acrylic, gouche and watercolours and feel that much of what I learn from your videos I can take away and use for my own paintings, so thanks heaps for that. I liked your chat about starting over and comparison, being a new learning artist, or wanna be artist, LOL I have wondered just how does one know when their art is good or even better than good. I truly am my own worst critic and while I think my work is not good I've been told it is and that I've come along way from the disjointed malformed portraits I started at. After 15mths I feel at least half of what I do is damn good but still cringe at the thought of suggesting to the world I'm thinking of opening an online art shop to sell my art because well is it really good enough lol. I'm going to be one of those people that will have artwork all over the house never to sent to a new home......omg I hope that doesn't happen

Yeah I just had a turpentine explosion the other day lol. Your painting is beautiful , the angle of the head is nice. Like a three quarter tint , nicely lit with grand color , excellent.
These/you are great! But if i can be a pain, maybe the perfect package might be if you could squeeze in a little info on colour mixtures as you're applying them too?.......pretty please...!
That (or pencil, or acrylic, or carbon transfer) is also a perfectly fine way to start, and it comes down to preference. I personally don't like the way charcoal blends with my paint, and my oil "sketches" for alla prima work are about establishing both form and value areas that I can blend into wet later. Thanks for the question!
Hello Cynthia, yeah I know what you mean about charcoal mixing into the oil paint being a nuisance. Charcoal can be spray fixed but that's not always something I want to do, and if you try to brush the charcoal away it can smear important shapes away. One thing I tried that's interesting, is using an air puffer or any plastic bottle type thing that can puff air out if squeezed. The air blows away the excess charcoal and leaves the drawing faintly visible still, but with much less charcoal left over to mix into the paint. It's a useful technique to know I think. Just thought I'd mention it to you in case you found it interesting at all. Great artwork by the way.

How many brushes do you go thru for a painting? Like do you have one for each color or just clean a few in between changing colors?
usually 3 to 5 of various sizes. I have a turp jar handy and clean them when I need to use a different hue.
