    The term 'self taught' wudnt be entirely true in your case, right? You were working with Amazon and you had some of the best mentors there who guided you on how to go about with things. This would mean you still had people to teach you concepts around the subject. Also one of the biggest advantages you had was you were in the US already where most tech companies still welcome ppl from non tech backgrounds to apply for tech jobs. Most tech companies located in 'Third world' countries wont even bother to look at your resumes upon knowing you dont even hold a Bachelor's degree in the relevant subject.

    Love your journey....even though you didn't specifically learn data science through an advanced degree, you did a couple of open data courses, and you learnt a lot on the Job.
    NOTE:Just start somewhere and learn effectively on the job, then you can transition if you want to, and possibly get an advanced degree if you want to.

    First, congratulations to you. It takes a lot of positive qualities to take a self-motivated, self-organized journey into a whole career. That said, I'm a neurologist. One of my interests is human brain variations. A wonderful aspect of life is diversity - different brain developments, different backgrounds, different interests. So, to pursue data analysis one has to have certain types of interests and certain desires from a career. Maybe you could make a video on what the day to day life of a data scientist is like, and who might be a person to fit this career path.

    I create excel tools and perform metric analysis using raw data sets for my department. In every job I've had so far, from retail to QC lab, I've found myself trying to solve problems with the tools I had, usually a messy data query and excel.
    I think they're pretty basic excel skills I learned myself while independently trying to analyze and organize the data. All my projects are self driven and outside of my role/responsibilities, essentially delivering these metrics and tools for "free" because I find it fun to do.
    I've recently considered moving into a data/informatics focused field, but I have no coding knowledge.
    My current job pays decently well and it's hard to walk away from. I think for now I'll expand my skill set within my current role basically be the "excel" expert of whatever department I'm in while making connections to people within the company that are in roles I am interested in.
    Maybe I'll try to also apply for mid level roles, it's just hard since I'm essentially entry level skilled, but don't want to give up my current mid to high tier salary (in my field at least).

    Most of things you said are true but somehow aren't useful for some to look for advices. For example, retention rate is low that's mostly caused low efficient learning strategies and bad learning habits. you learn stuff one day and you get it, you have to schedule to review them until those knowledge were committed to the long-term memory. in terms of practical things, it'd be different from the learning and working for sure. But I still think it's style and way of working.

    New to your channel and very inspiring!! But technically strictly speaking I wouldn't say you're really "non-tech" background. Traditionally the B school student/major is referring to more just business (accounting/ finance/ marketing..etc); if you've done any IT/ MIS/ SQL courses from school, even it's under b school, you did have your exposure already. I've met quite a few data scientists in person or listened to a lot of podcasts (one of my very favo is Me, Myself, and AI); the true "tech" background ppl are in fact minority. There are quite a lot Physics/ Applied Physics/ Applied Maths or even Engineering background turned DS out there. I do totally agree your message throughout a few videos though: the fundamental theory and basic is actually the most important, not the coding. There is no DS if there is no "Statistics", which is probably why you said it somewhere too a lot of the companies offer a job with DS title while the job content has nothing really to do with DS but really just about computer science/ data IT related. Also why not all CS background people can be a good DS, because it's really not just about cleaning data, ETL, DB or data engineering.

    • @nycto16
      @nycto16 Před 2 lety +1

      Business is the most relevant degree for DS in my view. You already take classes in technology as a business student including data analytics, MIS etc. Also there's a huge side of statistics in business. Specially those who specialize in finance, economics or MIS going into DS will be easy.

    sorry for my curiosity..you work as a Data Analyst or a Data Scientist..I believe these are two different things..sounds similar but different..

    • @abz274
      @abz274 Před 2 lety

      Data analyst is more envolved with data itself, when you already have the numbers, the methods, or anything that you can to provide information without further research, so you use technical stuff such as excel, power bi, tableau, etc to present this data with nice design and analysis. Data scientist is a little deeper, you need a larger skillset of statistics, math, computer itself, because you will be using programming to solve your problems, the projects are bigger and they have a higher level of complexity (tools: python, jupyter notebook, matplotlib, pandas, sql, programming, etc) to build models of prediction, working with IA, NLP, computer vision, etc...you have more options in ds as well.

    • @TheAnugupta
      @TheAnugupta Před 2 lety

      @@TheAnugupta I'm a data scientist at IBM and many clients don't have a clue about the difference. Many times I was asked to do stuff with excel (which I suck) and metrics of marketing stuff. I was like?? Why do you need me for exactly? "Aren't you a data scientist?" hahaha very common to happen.

    • @abz274
      @abz274 Před 2 lety

      @uranus to me, data engineering is more "technical". you get the data and you build an etl from scratch (you need to know about data architecture, big data, sql)...i totally get it what Sundas said about repetition, because it's basically the same what you do many times in many projects (very recommended for those who don't mind knowing about business), it's not so focused on the thinking of "what happened here", "why could be the reason of x thing happening", which i consider a data scientist role, the solution of problems where you can be creative about insights.
      as for my career choice, i actually didn't have a clue about any of these (i was working previously with hotelary, totally non related). hahaha i didn't even know how to work with excel. i got an internship at ibm, where they alocated me in the fullstack role, but i hated, i like to think about stuff, connect the dots, programming is just the tool for it, but i don't find it particularly fun. so they made me take data courses, i felt it wasn't for me cause i've always have been terrible at math, but...in data things just started to make sense somehow, so i kept studying and now i'm working with AI and i became and specialist in machine learning. :) any questions, feel free to ask.
