Every once in a while I come back to this video, I walked this path 10y ago in the same decrepit state as it was in this video... I used my both hands to 'support' myself along the hillside (or at least I tricked myself into thinking it was safer that way)... What a brave soul he was, making these incredible videos of his adventures.
RIP Daniel Ahnen (who filmed this amazing footage of him undertaking this walk). Beautiful video. I used to adore swimming in the lakes and watching the crazy people on the Camino. Very sad to hear Daniel is no longer with us. He's left a legacy in film though.
As of July 28, 2014, the first 100 meters or so of the Caminito were repaired. The section where the trail was destroyed to prevent entry was re-done, and the only thing keeping you out is a couple of flimsy fences which can be easily moved and walked around, and dozens of “entry prohibited, no trespassing” signs. No technical climbing skills or equipment are needed to walk on the restored section. However, the section is very narrow and there is no railing (yet). The safety rope is still there, but it is loose and in sad shape. So if heights make you unsteadily dizzy - better spend the day at the beautiful beach in Torremolinos. To get to Caminito del Rey you no longer need to walk around the railway. From the curve just past the train station take the road toward the gorge. It soon becomes unpaved, but in good condition and no 4WD is needed. Park at the parking lot just in front of the gate on the left (no further access) Coordinates: North 36 degrees, 54 minutes, 44.9 seconds. West 004 degrees, 45 minutes, 57.8 seconds. Gently move the fence blocking the trail on the right (going uphill), and follow the trail which will then curve left and down, and in less than two minutes gets you to the beginning of Caminito del Rey. Move another fence, take a deep breath, and you are there! The restored section is in great shape. If any of the construction workers are present they would probably ask you to leave because works is still in progress.
I did this walk back in 2010. Such an amazing experience and something to tick off my 'to do list'. Rip to this guy as well. He passed away in 2011. Legend of a guy who lived life to the full.

how the fock did they build this shit in the first place is what interests me.. you can't haul up a massive crane up there to set it up.. it all had to be done manually, which is scray as fock
+nomadineternity1981 It was built back in the early 1900s as a walkway for the men who maintained the hydro-electric plant there. FIVE people have died in the last 5 years alone trying to go along this thing.
I walked this in 2004 and commented at the time "If this was in the UK it would be £15 to get in" Well, now we have Euospain the real Spain of yesteryear has sadly passed into history.
Damn, I wish it was still like this! My friends and I have been wanting to walk this for years - so whilst we were out in El Chorro this past month (on a climbing trip) naturally we HAD to visit it... unfortunately, I'd now consider the Caminito del rey the World's Safest Walkway...The locals have built and entirely new timber walkway over the top of the existing. Whats worse is that they've also completely forbidden participation in any of the climbing routes which can be accessed off the pathways. Major bummer.
Consider the lifes that were lost in that place. Consider the rescue costs of unprepared, unequipped, untrained, irresponsible people. If one just wants to risk their life, there are a lot of other ways to do it... I am happy they repaired it. This way I was able to do it without fearing for my life and everyone can enjoy the beauty of the place. Also, there are still a lot of climbing routes and vias-ferrata there if you are more adventurous. ;)
Beautiful backdrops and a sense of a haunting bygone past with an added twist of danger. Much better than hanging off cranes by one hand overlooking big cities IMO.

This is how I remember it when I was younger. I just stumbled across what it looks like today, it might sound silly, but I preferred it when it was in this state. Feels like the walk has lost its soul a little with how it is now.
Damn that is some scary s**t ! The guy who filmed this must have an enormous set of cojones, he walked across those narrow bits of steel like they were nothing. Also I'd be worried about the structural strength of some of that concrete, it could just give out from under you ! Anyway it looks like they've rebuilt the walkway in a much safer manner, so maybe someone less brave such as myself can enjoy the scenery !
No, he would have wanted to carry on climbing! he could have been an active climber [health permitting] well into his seventies.. it is absurd when people say ''oh, but he/she would have wanted to go that way''....they would not.. they would want to be doing their sport for decades to come..Geo Thermal
juandenz2008 I'm not a brave person, but I did el caminito last week. You don't need to be brave to do it, you need to trust yourshelf and enjoy. The new structures are safe, it's nothing like this video but the experience is amazing, this place is magic, is really beautiful.....
Wow, seen this a dozen times but still gives me the chils! i am happy to say I've walked the trail but I do admit I've done it at late 2021 after the repairs / renovation. Must say it's still as impressive as it looks here on this video, and much safer which is fine! Nice touch too to leave some of the bad / broken parts of the old trail, to see how bad it was a few years ago. Also have been lucky to be able to pass over the hanging bridge, as the day I'd planned this was the first day that week they opened that option, the wind was too much to allow this. One note on the great choice of sound track (really fitting, IMO), whose the voice giving a speech of sorts at around 2:00 in the video? I assume it's a US president, but I really don't know for sure.
I would have loved to do it! I know they made it safe and now many can enjoy the beauty but truly something has been lost :( I just loved it as it was, looked so amazing. . .crazy and dangerous, old and beautiful. . .

+nomadineternity1981 It was built back in the early 1900s as a walkway for the men who maintained the hydro-electric plant there. FIVE people have died in the last 5 years alone trying to go along this thing.
That's right, but it is now restored and you can cross it safely enjoying the sights!
I,m not watching this video again!! Afraid of heights big time!!!!
I walked this in 2004 and commented at the time "If this was in the UK it would be £15 to get in" Well, now we have Euospain the real Spain of yesteryear has sadly passed into history.
Espectacular!! FElicitaciones al corajudo que se anima a atravesarlo.
love the music
I love how dude trips at the beginning, almost diving right off the edge.
Ironic
It is now restored, and a major tourist attraction . Well worth a visit
Still the best video out there of this place. Give me the willies every time, given there's no clipping in whatsoever. A Great shame he died.
Whew!!! What a trip!
They need to do a trip with this for the Oculus Rift!
Cnith Daniel has been dead since 2011.
@@ausproductionsofficial and the old path isn't accessible anymore.
Holy shit time flies. I remember it like it was yesterday the first time i saw this video, that's 8 years ago now..
Me to, about 8 years ago. There's an article on Yahoo that says the path is now open again after it's been repaired.
That was cool, thanks for posting it! Pretty steady hand too. Very impressive.
Easily, the most disturbing footage I've seen here on CZcams. More power to you!!! Love it.
google his name. he's dead
02:13 “Out of the way noob!”
I was pushing my back on the chair, first half on the right, second half on the left!!
amazing video...
Outstanding tune to go with the video.
Yeah they ruined it... They made it a tourist attraction like everything in Spain...
yeah. too bad people can't die now...
Also, there are still a lot of climbing routes and vias-ferrata there if you are more adventurous. ;)
I think that's the way my grandparents took to go to school every day.
Beautiful backdrops and a sense of a haunting bygone past with an added twist of danger.
Much better than hanging off cranes by one hand overlooking big cities IMO.
Biennnn, vídeo histórico, para el album de la Historia, muy interesante
Agradecido por compartir su experiencia
I almost had panick attack :) Scaaaaary!
I love old youtube videos.
He died in a climbing accident in India in 2011.
lankeysob He would have wanted to go that way.
lankeysob true or just trolling?
Yes, it’s JFK.
I watch this every now and again when I need a thrill... this is so scary!
Amazing. And an amazing choice of music too !
more interesting is how did they make these places
carefully
Am I the only one who actually really wants to do this after watching the video?
Haha okay :)
I would have loved to do it! I know they made it safe and now many can enjoy the beauty but truly something has been lost :( I just loved it as it was, looked so amazing. . .crazy and dangerous, old and beautiful. . .
I walked it in august 1994. Great video.
I went to the Malaga area of Spain back in 1978 when I was dating a Navy WAVE who was stationed at NAS Rota Spain. I spent 2 1/2 years at Naval Air Station Sigonella Sicily. I flew over to see her one trip and along with another couple we went up into the Mountains north of Algeciras. If I had known this place existed.. I DEFINITELY would have went! Of course forty years ago the walkway wouldn't have been THIS bad.
I don't think 360p can be classified as high quality.
It was high quality at that time
2:27 . No words.
This is my favorite CZcams video!! I have so much fun going on the journey!! You are are awesome to do it!! Hot!
He is dead
It has all been changed now. I hiked it with my family 2 years ago and it has a nice path with chain link fence.
