  • Some people have always been frightened of bridges. Gephyrophobia sufferers often try to avoid crossing bridges altogether, driving miles out of their way to avoid them. Of course, quite a few bridges can be rough experiences for those with acrophobia, as well.
With some bridges, however, terror seems to be the only sensible response. Here, we look at 12 bridges that would turn anyone’s legs to jelly. Read on, but don’t look down.

@Maria Kelly Also, the film True Lies with Jamie Lee Curtis and Arnold Schwarzenegger was filmed on the older one, parallel to the one shown here. And the new bridge isn't scary. The old one was because it was narrow, one lane in either direction and no shoulders. Two trucks passing or two cars pulling boats was tense. If there was an accident, nightmare blockage and not really 7 miles long either.

A couple months ago I ran a cross country race that ended on the far side of #11, the Royal Gorge Bridge. The last quarter mile was across the bridge, and I can confirm the whole thing shakes when people are on it, and it has lots of gaps an inch or two wide. There were several people who would have placed high in the race but refused to cross it. It definitely was one of the most memorable race finishes.

The village hand made Bridge shows how great small communities can be and they hand make a new bridge every year. How much City dwellers could learn from these people about respect and working together as a community, well done indeed.

I’ve only been on one of these, the 7 mile bridge over the Florida keys. It may not be scary for the locals, but the first time you cross that thing, it’s a mind f-. After one or two miles, you can only see water in all directions. That does something to your psyche. And that’s when the sun is shining. Me and a friend drove to key west one summer. On the way back, it was cloudy and later on in the day. You can’t speed up, and you don’t want to stop. And all it takes is one sleepy truck driver to throw everyone into the water.
The Sunshine Bridge that links St Petersburg Florida to the other side of the bay is a scary one too. Not as much as many of these. But it has a sharp incline, a high pitch, and a large vessel rammed into one of the pillars back in the 70’s or 80’s, and people just drove right off into the Gulf of Mexico. So, crossing that thing at 5 in the morning, knowing it’s history was not a pleasure.

My mom has a great fear of bridges as well due to a very abusive/traumatic experience she was put through by her ex when she was 16. I always felt so bad for my mom when my sister and I were kids and we would have to travel somewhere where there was a bridge and no other way to go around. My mom would have to have the radio off, no one could talk, she would grab the steering wheel so tight that her knuckles would be completely white, and she would be hyperventilating the entire time. When I got old enough to get my learners permit she would pull over before a bridge and jump into the back seat with my sister or a friend who would then hug my mom while I drove over the bridge and then we would switch places again after We were over the bridge.

I kinda like this video. And I also greatly appreciate you converting the measurements from meters to feet. Otherwise, for some videos regarding dangerous bridges or roller coasters, I normally have to pause the video periodically, and do the metric conversions MYSELF! Which really tends to be a real pain in the butt, if you know what I mean. So thanks again for doing the conversions for me. Let's just say I'm not one of those people who can just convert meters to feet, right off the top of my head.
