The Jetta is 'safe'. It's blemish free, but also featureless. It's a Gin and Tonic without the Gin, but in a VERY clean glass.
That's some quality Top Gear style jibberish right there!
Awm Joeyjoejoe
Thanks!
This is a good car. With the new 1'8 turbo, it is very good on gas and mine includes the sierra leather seats. With all the technology included, this car is too good for the snobbish Jeremy. What a fake !
Tiago Costa
Not anymore apparently!! :D
Maybe not clean anymore, but at least, this company doesn't kill people … The Three Big Ones in North America are trying to kill the biggest seller in the world with the concert of the medias and bad publicity to overlook their own malefic and deadly problems !

"No ordinary Jetta, it's the two-liter turbo-diesel 👌"
The Jetta,
It's....a car.
It comes with wheels, doors, a roof, spaces to put people and stuff, some buttons and controls inside that do things, and a motor of some variety.
Which is a good thing
It's a German Toyota Corolla
Simple as that
hmmm...no.
Pretty much.
I owned two Jetta's and drove both of them to 400000km - I believe that makes me more qualified than most to know these cars.
Its a golf with less cargo space.
would I be wrong if I claimed that it's more boring than a Corolla?
it is a car.
@Abdullah exactly what they were going for, i think. i used to hate them because they're so damned boring, but then i realized that they're trying to _just make a normal car._ the jetta is perfect at just _being a normal car._
Jeremy would say “It is AN car” lol
I use to hate or be confused with the manual lights controls...but actually is kind of wise...if broke just change the buttton

Jeremy Clarkson: I cannot think of one word to say about this
Also Jeremy: Sometimes my genius is almost frightening
Zildjian Casurao if anything, that tells you just how bad the Jetta if even the great Clarkson can’t think of a thing to say

Yup xD
Man, this sure is an ancient comment
"The Volkswagen Jetta, Made in Mexico."
That will be quite a review. Lol
Thats why older VW's played "La Cucaracha" when you started the engine... Mexico!
jetta's are awesome, it was my first car and it was great. enough room to haul my friends around, great gas mileage, fun little manual transmission. what more could you ask for? its a cost effective sedan that gets the job done. its no mercedes but hey, still a great car if you take care of it.
I've had all types of cars over the last 45 years. My favourites have been Subaru's and currently have an XV. My wit drives a VW Jetta 2.0 Turbo Petrol, which she has had since new in 2007. To say we like this car would be an understatement ( guess that's why we still have it) It provides great performance with good furl economy and plenty of creature comforts, let alone being plain comfortable. There are very few mid-size cars which I can stretch out in to drive...and the Jetta is probably the best.
The car has been reliable and when the conditions are suitable .... 'great fun' too!
Once again, a classic case of people here....including Jeremy (who would never own such a lowly vehicle anyway) knocking a car of which they have no knowledge.
We can't all afford and AMG Mercedes.....but we can get good quality at a far cheaper price. Yes, the Jetta was made in Mexico, but I now know that it has been screwed together a lot, lot better than most other similar vehicles out there!
wow......what's a furl? furry fuel?
Tiago Costa Furl....yep it's the new power source from flags....you unfurl it!
Paul Rayment You don't need an AMG to have fun. A petrol powered lighter hatch is a lot of fun so is a powerful family saloon. The Jetta is neither of those ...
Ye but jezza has a Ford focus and I'd say that's more of an everyone car than a jetta
I just need to listen to you for ten seconds to know that you're a boring person and have no sense of humor at all. Also Jetta is shit. As boring as your text.
I remember him saying the same thing about the old Vauxhall vectra back in the 90's. That it was so dull you could barely use any words to describe it.
There is a place for dull in the market if it ticks the boxes. The most successful car ever sold is the Toyota Corolla. Offering affordable transport to millions is nothing to be ashamed about, which is how Volkswagen started as well. And they keep some entry level model in their line up for that reason, not everybody can afford a Golf GTI or Passat.
Jeremy is one of the few people who can be brutally honest while kidding at the same time. Sorry stig, Jeremy has you beat on this one.
Now that's what I call a good VW review.
I've driven my Jetta for 100k miles in 10 years and the engine which is a 2.0TDI performs as it was since day 1. Beautiful car.
Vw products are reliable and better built than the competition. The word he should have used was quality.
A 2.0 Turbo that got 52 mpg, 700 miles per tank, could outrun a BMW 3 Series from 60-100 mph and hadn’t an issue until it was attacked for not adhering to a Bogus Emissions Standard… 4 Years and 78K of effortless Driving. Great car!
"I cannot think of one word to say about it." When you think about it, it's actually a compliment! I LIKE driving my family in a boring car!
I got my 2.0 tdi mk5. 2 years ago and i love it I don't find it boring its a fun nippy comfy smooth reliable ride.clarkson aint living in the same world as your everyday punter.
I haven't found his review in the Sunday Times it's got to be as hilarious as the Passat one 😂
well did you find it yet

I admit the Volkswagen Jetta doesn't have enough features, especially the 2012, 2013 models but it's built quality, cabin design, upholstery, legroom, exterior looks and performance are very good. It's engine is strong even in dynamic mode and even better in the sport mode. But no one can doubt Jeremy at all! He's the boss.
Its just SIMPLY awesome😌
And here i sit, longing for a Mk2. The newer Jettas are pretty ugly tbh.
They're too boring to be ugly.
Try a 2013 Corolla, mine came with manual windows!!
Unless you know how to repair one one yourself.
i dont care what they say, the jetta is a part of me. Ever since i was little, my family owned a jetta, and never have they said they wanted something else. I understand it is not the best, whether it is the engine, the ride, etc. what it is is heritage, passion, and precision. Mpg is brilliant and it is such a quick little car, handles well too. Everyone does not like them, i understand, but at least keep it in your mind that this car says everything about volkswagen, and i love that.
I watching many of these Vids when old squad never gets old
"This is the first car I've ever driven that has not a single feature. Nothing."
Wait until he drives a Dacia Sandero.
You can talk about how it feels like a 10 year old Peugeot, how it has very bad safety ratings, how Dacia partners with Lada... There's plenty to talk about with Dacia.
Jetta on the other hand is completely featureless, there isn't anything that makes it distinct from any other small sedan or even another VW cars...
I’ve had one for 9 years. Except for a new EGR and clutch plate, it has taken the rough and tough Indian roads. Utterly reliable if you service it properly.
The only Jetta I ever drove was a 96 with quad circle headlights. Didn't drive it often as it wasn't mine, but I enjoyed it when I did.
ha! I told my friend exactly the same about Golf V few weeks ago :)
When you are used to drive all kind of exciting and fun cars, a regular car is just that an ordinary vehicle.
Jeremy takes it personal with pretty much everyone.
Its not unusual for him to point out stupid looking people in the audience and make fun of them as soon as they open their mouth. Its just the way he does things.
I am buying a 2007 1.9tdi Jetta in December, test driven it twice, LOVE IT.
Honestly don't know whats wrong with it. It feels like a mk5 golf, is fully equipped, extremely comfortable and extremely economical! What more do you want for a daily driver??
The burn at the end
Lol. I actually love my mk6!
Old Jetta's (Mk2 and Mk3 - called in Europe Vento, which I have at the moment) were very nice and reliable cars. I love how they were economic, and had cheap parts. What's more, if your car is broken, in most cases you can fix it on your own, but usually, there is nothing to fix cause nothing is broken. Jetta all the way!
Regards from Poland.
Btw - I don't care where car is made, I am looking only at reliability, fuel consumption and style. Regards.
You are looking at style and yet you are driving Jetta...
@@SomeUserInternet My vento was (take a note of the word "was" as it rusted to pieces, unfortunately) a very stylish car. I was living in Poland 11 years ago and had no money to buy a Chevy or Dodge. Vento or Jetta Mk3 costed me 3500 polish zlotys, which was at the time around a thousand bucks. For me, it was just sweet, beautiful car, that served me well. Take care!
My 83 scirocco came from the karmann factory floor :)
I was blessed with my 2004 GTI having a "V" as its first vin letter, and my current Passat was made here in TN :)
In America the TDI is fully optioned, or at least I have yet to see one with roll downs in it.
A mate of mine had a Jetta in high school. I remember travelling with him to an event and being shocked that it had no bluetooth connectivity (this was mid-2010s)
Whats with Top Gear and them mentioning Mexico?
If you've been to America, you'll know. Trump described it best as "shithole countries". You look at films like Once upon a time in Hollywood and Mexicans purposely gets slotted in.
Also ironically, some Jetta's actually are made in Mexico but Jeremy was saying it in another context.
@@grandiora All jettas are now made in Mexico. Last jetta to be made in Germany is mk4 (sold as Bora here in Europe). In Europe, VW replaced jetta with car from one of thier subsdiaries, Skoda Octavia.
@@grandiora Mexico is a shithole. Or else it would be a 1st world nation
@@grandiora I saw tons of those jettas in cancun and all of them are basically unequipped
@@mrmedium7984 I'm mexican and I can confirm this.
actually mexican manufacturers are top notch, terrific engineers work for low paying jobs there, and actually do a great job, not only in motors but electronics too
Yea, with modern technology many non-automotive countries can make good car. You just need QE do their jobs, manufacturing engineer maintain all the equipment, and process engineer to make the plant efficient and safe. Robots will do the rest
He actually didn't say being made in Mexico was good or bad, he just said it was all her knew to say about it.
Chinese workers are completely capable of churning out fantastic stuff too. Its just the nature of the beast. When the entire goal is making stuff as cheap as possible and wages in china lend themselves to that, it means the cheapest crap possible will be made there. Honestly the Chinese do a pretty damn good job for what they get to work with.
They don’t hold a candle to the Germans
cloridan Beauchamps Lol that’s cute, let me know when you go up
I said the same thing about the Golf I owned, when someone asked me what it was like to own, the only word that came to my head was boring.
Jeremy Clarkson also punched out a caterer when his steak was late. When he is having a bad day he is quite literally criminally bad. As regards the TDI, he seems to be having a bad day. The simple fact is that a lot of people like the VW TDI, and for some very good reasons. The low rpm torque of a TDI, or any turbo diesel, is significant. There is a club of people who have driven one 600 miles on a single tank of fuel. The handling is not negligible, since it shares suspension geometry with the GTI. And the DSG transmission is a dual clutch gear box, that feels like a manual in auto-mode. Shifting is very, very fast. TDIs are nimble, economical little cars, with lot of poke in the lower RPMs. Also, is Clarkson telling us he has a problem with Mexicans?
I respect a good taco. Mmmm, yummy :D
I thank Mexico for that simple pleasure.
December we will get Xmas Special, about the upcoming Season 18 wich launches at January :P I hope that helps for those who waiting for ne wTop gear episodes ;P
I have been in Nemak production facilities.
The don´t get have "a few parts" from them.
They get the mono-block, the pistons, the compressing rings, camshaft, and with that you get pretty much the critical parts of an engine.
Nemak has patented their own Al alloy, and that is one reason of their quality,
They are even now making magnesium manifolds.
I remember when this aired. I had the same exact car at the time.
jaja brits always complainning about things that they can not have (Mexico) ??

They said the same thing about the passat during a news segment when someone complained that they'd never reviewed one.
Jeremy likes the Volkswagon golf; but Volkswagon Jetta’s are rubbish to him
I think he only likes the Golf GTI.
Here you go:
Hahaha, VW rocks. 10 year warranty on perfection, this car is an engineering marvel and a joy to drive.
what season are they on is the continuing 17 ?
Classic :34 second video.
Clarkson you did it again ole chap.
Mexican made cars do not burden me with warranty claims, they actually have fewer faults than US made examples.
Wrong.
What is he on about, it just looks similar to a Passat which is very nice imo, and it's a vw so will go on forever!?
With proper maintenance.
I'm pretty sure it's actually illegal to have an unskippable 15s ad on a 34s video
Which episode and season was this?
Pls reply as soon as possible
Simple. We love our sedans.
The Jetta is better looking and has 4 doors which appeals to a slightly older market who has more money.
The Golf is for kids.
I reviewed a Jetta highline and had alot to say about it.
@armidons Probably gotta wait for the christmas special. Then they will have winter top gear after that! Man, I love when new episodes come out. Best time of the year.
I have a 2.5 SE too...and i cannot b happier with my purchase...
All German cars are overrated these days. Great when they are new, but hell what isn't. For the record Im not saying they are total crap, just overrated. Don't buy one that's out of warranty.
LOL, who told you that?
yeah, buy french or british, much more reliable.... -.- Only some japanese brands can be more reliable than the germans
I own a body shop. Been buying, driving, and fixing most every make and model for 27years. There was a time when german cars were very reliable. That time has passed. And the parts cost for typical maintenance on an older german cars that have over 100,000 miles usually outweighs what you paid for it. Buy a few used ones in a row, and you'll see what I mean. I've never worked on a French car, but the British ones are problematic to say the least, and they are also on my 'do not purchase list' unless they are under factory warranty.
Ed Jackson
Germans are very reliable. If the car has been checked regulary and driven how it is supposed to be driven, it can 100% run for a long time without breaking down, I can promise you that. My dad has driven many audis over the years, and he stuck with them for a reason.
Any modern car built in the last 20 years can run a long time if driven correctly, and maintained. I never said every german car would break down every thousand miles. I just said they are no better than most American cars, but more expensive in every way. Initial cost, tune ups, parts, etc etc. They DO occasionally break down, and when they do, its gonna cost more than average to fix them. I make a living fixing cars. This is not just my opinion.
Jeremy! Shame on you! That is one of World's Ultimate Cars.. Even better than a Dacia Logan!2.0Litre TDI that makes the thing go like stink, comfy seats, and a boot in the back big enough for an aspiring criminal to start his own illegal weed plantation.... I've driven a similar car for over 800 miles in a single day. No sweat! Actually today I did 600 miles in it.. absolutely loved every one of them. Much better than crossing the US in a upgraded Toyota (Lexus) without cup holders...
Dude, i would rather take a Lexus with no cup holders to cross the US then that piece of shit Audi.
it s a VW...and since when are cars like VW considered pieces of shit?maybe you just can t afford one and you are jelly?
gammerlaan I think when vw gamed the European emissions tests, cheated the American emission tests and showed contempt for the health of populations on the planet of a scale that matches the tobacco companies
gammerlaan there is no point in this car as vw makes the far better passat, the problem with the Jetta is its more expensive then it should be, for not much more money I can have a passat it's a no brainer.
The passat has better proportions and a stupid amount of legroom. Its basically the same price with the same performance. The Jetta is just a smaller version for no real reason
Had a 2011 Jetta with the 2.5 5 cylinder. It had pretty much no cool features. It was just a car. But the most reliable thing ever
my dad has MK6 TDI and it has tons of options..although his is a highline so he paid for all those options. But that's why they were able to sell them so cheap, they had no options and not all people need a ton of options..hence why there's different lines..(high line, comfort line ect)
The Germans are absolutely ruthless when it comes to Quality Control. The only experience I have with Mexico's output are in regards to the engines we import for the Passat. I'll say this -- it's extremely rare for us to have an engine with a defect of any kind. If we have a defect on a car it's usually due to electronic issues. The engines we receive from Mexico are golden. They are nearly faultless. The Passat is a VERY well engineered, if inexpensively manufactured, sedan.
It gets ya from point a to point b safely and reliably, and for most people that's all that matters
what season/episode is that from?
I understand what you're saying. Even I read the full Jetta review from him on the Sunday Times and he gave everything top marks like practicality, fun to drive, fuel economy etc. But he said its not his cup of tea. And the only reason why he would recommend a cee'd is because hes around it all the time and if they had a different car, it would be on his boring list. Thats the way Jeremy does things...judge things prematurely, and if they're good cars, so be it.
bring on season 18 already!
I really like the chime to this car
My dad just bought one. I'm so showing this to him haha
Top Gear: Your source for a 20-second video every 5 weeks.
I’ve got one of these, they’re pretty bland, but sport mode is pretty fun too.
Come on, Jeremy!
Chris Goffey reviewed the Jetta-based Seat Toledo (which I proudly own) in 1991, he didn't complain and he even had a good opinion about it.
"Jeremy Clarkson on the Volkswagen Jetta." For a moment I read 'Jetta' as 'Jezza'.
Wonder what the review was like. Its a VW so you can chunk it around, and the 2 liter engines have gobs of power and turbodiesel boost. All the fun of a golf in a sedan :o
The reason he can't find a single word to describe it is because it's obviously a brilliant car. It's quite good looking as well and makes a change from the 'I don't know what to buy honey, shall I just buy a Golf because my neighbours and friends have them?' which he continues to praise for what reason?
My Contour was made in Mexico.Best car ive ever owned.153,000 miles and very little has gone wrong with it.
I work for Volkswagen Group of America building the new Passat (I work for the Quality Group). I tend to agree with Clarkson that there isn't much to be said about a basic Jetta. It's good basic transportation. The GLI adds a bit of excitement. The Passat is a good solid car; you're paying for the engineering -- it's a very good car for the money. What it lacks in soul, it will still best many comparable sedans when equipped with the potent 282 hp V6, or out-mileage many others in TDI trim.
which episode is this?
When does season 19 come out ??? PLZ ANSWER !!!
"It's no ordinary Jetta..."
The guys at Iracing that it was cool enough to put int he game, i never really figured that one out myself.
if you're talking about the jetta you should better be talking about the original one. that's a proper classic
im really suprised you dont know about adblock!
If Clarkson thinks that Jetta is featureless he should see the Mexican Jetta "Clásico", it was basically a mk4 Jetta with no radio, all plastic interior, manual windows and stainless steel rims with hubcaps
This met my expectations
Lol at the Volkswagen Jetta ad on the video.
I also reviewed a Jetta, and I completely disagree with Clarkson. He drives around in Astons and Ferraris, and than when it comes to ordinary cars he can't be realistic. Even his last two ''tests'' of normal cars, the twingo and the fiesta, were a joke... i still love him tho :P btw, european Jetta is nothing like the US version, no drums in the back for us... also, better suspension, better interior,...
A mint condition older Jetta Wolfsburg edition for me lol. GMs made in Mexico are actually good quality (For a GM anyway) but this new Jetta seems like a step back which is something I never expected from VW.
Euhm, my Dad drives a Hyundai Accent 1.6 outfitted with a 0.6bar turbo charger, racing suspension and new Brembo brakes, together with the Accent WRC vinyls (not the sponsor decals, just the stripes) and matching colours.
I've got a Mexican jetta with just over 155k miles on it and it's still runs great!
