- Not too exciting but decided to post anyhow. In this video I find out why my 1989 FXST Harley Davidson soft tail with the 1340 Evo engine headlight will not power on.

It's always nice to find an easy fix after taking things apart!
yeah wasn't going to post it but it is 1 of the few videos that I didn't have to fight with rust!
Hey! Oh Disgruntled One.... you may find this post was boring, but don't forget we're the ones that need the basics from montreal, Quebec. Thanks a whole bunch of whatever .
.....you just helped to get my bike inspected tomorrow. It's 8:00pm. Not much season left here. 1996 xl1200c . Gotta be bored once in a while.....ride!
That is awesome! Put a few miles on for me!
Another great video. Mike, could you do a video on problems and solutions on older harleys - I hear about issues with the primary chain, cam chain tensioner issues, compensator nut getting loose ,etc. Thanks. I was hoping you would have more stuff on HD - and since you have a ton of mechanical knowledge and years of doing it so great insights too.
Thanks! A good idea. I will try to work some of this in on my channel.
Glad to see that you had an easy repair Mike...
I'll take the easy ones the few times I get them!
Nice video I like the bike .reminds me of the old days.
Thanks Jim!
Good guess and good repair job. Greetings from Indiana.
thank you!
Thank ya Chief! Saved me a repair bill! :D
My pleasure. I am glad I could help!
I have a 2000 roadglide bo power to the headlight are there more than the 3 relays that are under the seat?
2020=Liked, you were on top list when i search something irelative to my search was for rear brake and rinning light blown the bulb no telling how long now but the lens has as crack on top and was lots water inside too go figure after lots rain here Florida, i hope you not too disgruntled, i have 08 softail heritage classic is my baby 2 new battery, regulator from RMSTATORdotCOM. Rear metzler cruisetek,KnN air filter, new spark plugs, primary oil was low but filled w. Harley recomended oil now shift sweet too, have tested alternator and seemed like i was geating good readings so i replaced regulator as i tested old had no charge current to battery wouldnr even move off 12volt on rev. Put the new stator all test w. 14.12volts flow to battery then all sudden rain alot maybe something wet or i have a loose wire for last 2 day i start engine fine then while drive Both battery and engine light up on the dash then it was licky i keep spare battery so when i stopped somewhere it wanted to not spin over like dead battery. Could stater be an issue but i found water in rear brake lens and buld blown. Im still stuck somewhere but when i come back to my tools im check bulb circuit??
Really appreciate this. Had the same thing happen , but with mine the connector broke and caused a bad connection on the ground wire. Glued connector back together and is working. Hope to order a new connector this week
Glad I could help!
I’m not getting any lights or crank to my motorcycle. It’s a brand new battery. Any ideas?
+1 for the Eric O expression. :D
I'll take 'em anyway I can get them!
hey Mike, I put new apes on my Roadking, extended the wires, documented how they came out of the plugs, put it back together. At the same time, Im installing LED headlight and passing lights. The signals, the horn, the headlight works but the passing lights do not. Do the passing lights share the same power as the headlight? How do you track this down? thanks.
I would have to look at wiring diagram. That is usually where I start. otherwise I can not tell you.
Mike your videos are like baseball ( I like baseball) kinda boring to people that don't know a shop setting . you will have your hard core fans like me and others will jump on and off the wagon. And that's a ok. Be who you are. I'll be a fan.
Thank u for being a continued fan and supporter! it is appreciated!
airways nice when the problem is that obvious! nice fix
I agree wasn't going to post if becuase it was so obvious but may help someone.
Good stuff, did it vibrate the solder off too, man that's a lot of vibration to do that. It must look like a strobe light at night coming down the highway. LOL
well it may have just been crimped What I look at is it held for 27 years and 90000 miles so I guess it was do. but yes it does vibrate a bit.
Going out and get a tester before replacing a $200.00 head light that stopped working after battery change. Yes I did check fuse.
This happen to me today.... did you found the problem
Knowing how much our 89's vibrate, blowing both elements happens on occasion. But in your case a less expensive repair. Nice easy fix and no crawling around on the floor. Has it cooled off up there? This is the first morning that's less that 75 for us...sure feels nice.
yes it has cooled off! about 54 here right now. And guess what, I actually took the day off to go riding! looking forward to the ride.
Oh nice! I have until Sunday off. No rides planned but hopefully we can get on the bike and ride soon. Did you see Eric's part one video? Pretty cool so far.
yes I did 1st thing this morn. now watching part ! of Ivans russian car rebuild..
That poor car has seen better days and boy that area he's in looks like a war zone. Pretty basic living conditions. He's done great on that car though.
Hello I have an 89 FXR. And I can’t find the short I have checked all wires at headlight. I even bought a new light still nothing any ideas
Trace wires back and look for a break. I am sure you did this but check the fuse also.
@@TheDisgruntledMechanic could it be a fuse if eveything else works . But headlight turns off sometimes and then turns back on randomly. I have a 1996 cb750 nighthawk. I think i might have exact problem as you
brother bought a after market headlight. the new one has four wires white, black & two yellow. the bike only has three wires. can this work?
check which color wires do what function on each headlight is where I would start then go from there.
@@TheDisgruntledMechanic he got it working. out of the two yellows one did nothing, the other made the light work as normal.
@@BigAlWillis awesome!
My 1999 sporter keeps blowing the fuse. To my headlight. Help
short to ground?
Holy crap theres hardly any wires in that headlight bucket. My 2010 FLHR has enough wire in there to light up a small town.
I had a similar situation, no high/low beam. It was a failure of a factory Deusch connector pin supplying power to the left handlebar. I believe you should over-rate your main power connections to compensate for looseness due to vibration, oxidation, and load variations, etc. When I unplugged the Deusch connector it had a white face and you could clearly see one pin had turned the surrounding plastic brown. I put a multimeter across the connector and read 12V. I should see 0v. So I bypassed that pin and used a single pin connection of higher quality. Problem solved. I should note that my bike has the original factory OEM lights.
the simplicity of the bike is one reason I keep it. nice find on your bike.
If anyone could help me I would greatly appreciate it I have a 1999 Fat Boy my low beam does not work it is not the bulb I pulled it out and I checked it at the plug there is no power going to the low beam but the highbeam works perfect I tried to follow it back underneath the dash and it loop back around and head towards the seat and then loops back into another pigtail and it looks like it head back to the front of the bike I know it does need a wire going to the toggle switch for the high and low beam but would anybody know what else I could check
David Hollyfield did you figure it out? My 2015 XL1200 custom is doing same thing. Right after I replaced battery
@@williamlandisiii3088 All I did was run a new power wire to it I found a 12 volt power supply that comes on when I turn the key on looks like the last owner cut a bunch of shit so I just found a power is all hope it helps bit if yours was working I would check to make sure you didn't leave a wire off on accident or maybe check to see if u have a inline fuse that could of popped when hooking battery up but I'd pull the head light and make sure u have power going to the harness at bot wires for high and low beam.. May just be the light lmk if that helps
@@davidhollyfield9712 can you possibly help. eveything else works . But headlight turns off sometimes and then turns back on randomly. I have a 1996 cb750 nighthawk. When light goes off low and high beam dont work. When turn back on randomly low and high beam both work. I didnt think i would have to take a apart headlight. But do you think i do?
@@miguelarr4629 when does it usually turn on and off when you are riding it or sitting still because if you are riding it and it goes on and off you might have a loose ground wire or even power wire whenever you hit bumps it might make connection and turn back on some bikes have the ground wire inside of the headlight bezel if it's loose it could possibly make it go on and off I would start there sorry it took so long
@@davidhollyfield9712 turn out to be the ignition start button. But thanks for the reply
Holy crap I have an 87 same color never seen the same one before
bought it new 1989. The decal on 1 side is wearing away but it still shines pretty good when cleaned up.
@@TheDisgruntledMechanic Looks great
Hey 98% er
Nice job and bike
+Richard Gill thank you!
At least their wasn't much rust in your way!
HAHA! good point didn't even think of that.
Awesome this repair was as easy as a banshee. What the heck might as well use as many *Eric O.* expressions as we all can..LMAO -John
Sorta like the saying sex sells, so does Eric o.'s expressions.
Eric O. is full of expressions. colder than a banshee, holy thunder, there's your problem lady, and on and on..I get a laugh watching his videos every time. His numbers are out of control. Couldn't happen to a cooler dude. Well ok besides me that is...LOL . You tell your wife to keep that cap in a safe place cause when I become rich and famous off of CZcams and then die a horrible death that hat will be worth a bundle....LOL
+The Plow Guys I don't have to worry too much about getting rich from CZcams. right now I am loosing more subs then I am gaining.
You lie. Why would people be *un*subscribing? You are a awesome dude.
+The Plow Guys truth lost 30 just this month
Inside of that head light tub looks like it was under water rusty as hell!!
yep she is 27 years old with 100,000 miles and seen some hard times! been rode through her share of rain storms too. dash bulb sockets are almost rotted away too.
that’s just the way they get.its nearly impossible to keep it from happening especially if you are in a humid environment.
Bahahaha... 98%er
