I thought I was the only one who shouted along to the line "...so I kissed him upside the cranium with an aluminum baseball bat" until I saw them for the Pork Soda tour and the entire crowd shouted it too. Something was/is still wrong with all of us. :)😀

Anytime since I was about 14 if I touch anything that even looks kinda like a baseball bat or anything I can kiss anyone upside the cranium with the first and only words out my mouth is that. I imagine if I was dying and couldn’t speak the only thing I could say was that😂

Les Claypool joined his first band Blind Illusion in the late 70's when he was still a teen... he was friends w/ Kirk Hammett (lead guitarist of Metallica, who also formed the thrash metal band Exodus) in school and auditioned for Metallica on bass in 1986 (Claypool was not a good fit and the job went to bassist Jason Newsted)
Now, Les Claypool was a huge Rush fan... he grew up on the more prog rock genre of music in the 70's (Yes, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin...) and funk music (Parliament, Funkadelic...) and is a huge Beatles fan (He later formed the band The Claypool Lennon Delirium w/ Sean Lennon, son of the late John Lennon of The Beatles... a space fantasy rock band) and was also a Frank Zappa fan.
Claypool had worked in the music scene in California for years before he formed Primus in the mid-80's as a quirky rock trio w/ his bass being the primary instrument of the band's sound... w/ Todd Huth (guitar) and Jay Lane (drums)... Their demo tape was titled 'Sausage' and recorded in 1988... Primus was not popular in the local scene, the odd band out between glam rock bands like Poison... L.A. Guns... and thrash metal bands like Death Angel... Heathen... Whenever Primus played gigs, the crowd would get irate and start chanting, "Primus sucks!" (which became their motto 😂)
However, both Huth and Lane were replaced by Larry LaLonde (guitar) who had played for the extreme metal band Possessed... and Tim 'Herb' Alexander (drums) who was also a huge Rush fan... Claypool was frustrated by the lack of label interest and decided to record a Primus concert and release it independently in 1989 as their live debut album 'Suck on this'... consisting of weird, quirky and original songs like 'John the fisherman'... 'Pudding time' ... 'Pressman'... Primus then released their debut album 'Frizzle Fry' in 1990... on Caroline.
In 1991, Primus was signed to Interscope Records and released the album 'Sailing the Seas of Cheese'... which got MTV airplay for 'Jerry was a race car driver'... 'Tommy the cat'... and eventually sold gold... then platinum in the USA. Primus opened for their heroes Rush on their 1992 tour... In 1993, Primus released 'Pork soda'... which gave them the huge singles - 'My name is Mud' ... 'Mr. Krinkle' ... 'DMV' ... and sold platinum.
In 1995, their album 'Tales from the Punch Bowl' got Primus their biggest single - "Winona's big brown beaver"... However, drummer Tim 'Herb' Alexander left Primus in 1996.
Primus hired Brian 'Brain' Mantia (drums) for 2 albums - 'The Brown album' (1997) and 'Anti Pop' (1999)... but neither albums sold up to expectation and Primus went on hiatus in 2000 after Brain left the band and joined Guns N' Roses for a while...
Les Claypool used the time off to form a number of music projects that included Colonel Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade ... Oysterhead ... Duo de Twang ... Clonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains ... and a solo album as well.
Primus returned to touring in 2003 w/ drummer Tim 'Herb' Alexander returning until 2006... Les Claypool has been actively playing w/ a number of projects that includes Duo de Twang... Claypool Lennon Delirium ... Currently, Primus is active w/ Tim 'Herb' Alexander returning on drums around 2014.

Last month I was in a Zoom masterclass with this drummer, Tim "Herb" Alexander. I actually played along with him as he showed us this drum part and talked about his thought process. It was a cool experience.
Primus is definitely a genre of their own, fusing elements of funk, metal, and even bluegrass. They are also one of the few bands where much of the music is written with bass as the primary instrument and guitar mostly just adding flavor. That's because Les Claypool is a weirdo and a genius, which lends to him doing things on a bass guitar that no one else could fathom. Their songs may not be mainstream chart-toppers, but they are definitely top-notch musicians. When I saw them live, the performance is just as tight as the recorded version.

Primus is a deep rabbit hole that has many side tunnels that Les has dug along the way. One of my favorites in these side projects is Oysterhead (Les Claypool, Stuart Copland and Trey Anastasio) that's one of many. Les has said Geddy Lee was a major influence and Primus's last tour was basically covering A Farewell to Kings, not A song off of it, but the whole album. Les spent some time with Geddy to make sure he was doing it justice, and Lee said in 2022:
"On Friday night we had the joyful experience of reuniting with our grand pals from Primus ...," Lee wrote. "We sat side stage as they immaculately worked through a cool selection of classic tunes which brought back fond memories of our touring together back in the early ’90s and then we were treated to the weird and wonderful experience of watching them perform our music: A Farewell to Kings in it’s entirety. Totally nailed it! They did us proud and we thank them deeply for the tribute and the lasting friendship."
Beyond Rush and Primus' professional relationship as touring partners, Lee and Claypool have been longtime pals, sharing their mutual love of fishing, wine and bass guitar whenever they're able.
Claypool himself considers Rush one of his earliest and most crucial musical influences; one of his first-ever concerts was Rush on its Farewell to Kings tour.

For a few years i dismissed Primus as a novelty gimmick band, but as it turns out i was just young and naive and had a lot more to learn musically. What really turned me around on them was their live show. Saw them twice in the 90s, including Woodstock 94. Great shows both times.

Also, Stanley Clarke was a big influence on him, among many others. Geddy Lee, Chris Squire, Toni Levin, Cliff Burton, and i’m probably forgetting a bunch. Check out the Primus album Miscellaneous Debris. it’s all covers and that kind of tells you what he listened to

Plus it was a song on South Park where the cows kinda go off the cliff😂 they are amazing. Hope you see this please check it. I think you guys will dig it. Kinda early Les, and he looks like “Mud” in the live video

Waaay back in high school, the group of guys i sat with all the time noticed my buddy looked like someone famous, so we all started going around thinking of someone that everyone would look like. Guy sitting across from me said, and i quote!! "Hey jimbo! You know who you look like?". I said who? "Tom Cruise". I called bull shit!! And then the best line ever!! "You really do!! With down syndrome!!!". Funniest shit ive ever heard in my life!!!! 🤣🤣🤣

American Life is a great Primus song. They have newer material, post-hiatus from this millennium too - Last Salmon Man, Jilly's on Smack, and anything from the Desaturating Seven album, but you could start with the Seven. They also did an album of the music from the Willy Wonka movie.
