I exclusively foster teens in Indiana. I hate the stigma that comes with teenagers. They’re the best age in my opinion! 🥰

After being a foster parent for over 20 years, I still only do newborns. We adopted 4, so being 59, we just do one foster baby at a time. I have to say though, my current foster baby (now 2 months old), I have fallen in love with his 21 year old FASD mom. She is sweet, has no support system, etc. I am stepping up my support of her and she calls me mom now. Even if the baby goes home, we’ll be here for her and the baby. I have one child in a wheelchair, so I’m always cautious who I take in. At least with babies, they grow with us. 🥰

Yes! They’ve been helping clear their plates, make their own sandwiches, getting their own breakfasts and water - it’s nice to teach them independence.
In a lot of ways teens require a lot less energy since they can do a lot on their own!
I was so excited seeing the title of this video and it was so heartwarming to watch! I love how you thoughtfully setup and bought things for them and how welcoming you are! I think the gifts of imperfection by brene brown could be a good short read for teen girls that teaches a lot about themselves.

I see this is a few months old, but for teenagers with self-esteem and mental health issues I recommend the Lockwood and Co series by Jonathan Stroud. It's a ghost hunter series, the main characters are 15-16 and loss and difficult family situations are addressed, although not the main topic of the books. What I especially like is that the three main characters find a family in each other and start new after trauma.

Early on in my young teen years, I loved loved the older Nancy Drew books, Chicken Soup for the Soul books and sisterhood of the traveling pants.
In terms of a the color of the bedding, I actually really like that dark blue! You never know what the girls may end up liking, and i think they will be very grateful as a whole to have clean sheets/space for their room.
It worked out great because the girl in that bed - her favorite color is blue :)
@@HappyHoppe Great! It's amazing on what can work out sometimes. I also just had a thought too in terms of stocking up on soaps and such....Bath and Body works, especially if you can hit them up during their Semi-Annual Sales, where their shower gels and hand soaps are cheap. MANY teenage girls love them, and that could be a good bonding thing in terms of letting them pick stuff out. Then, when they leave, they can take those with them, which would also free up more space, and give them something that's a bit comforting for wherever they go back to.
As a former foster kid I appreciate your efforts. Also have 15 year old twin girls and say you’re very brave. I need respite from these girls 😊
😂 yes, every parent needs a break sometimes! We are happy to watch these 4 girls and give their foster mom a break! They are great teens :)

My 14 year old niece really love "the good girls guide to murder" series. It's a mystery series. Growing up I liked Percy Jackson, Chronicles of Narnia, a lot of fantasy really. I liked anything that could help me escape from being bullied. I also suggest Mangas like cells at work (its about the cells in your body fighting against viruses super wholesome and helps you remember biology). I just read "The language of flowers" and it was amazing, its about a girl who aged out of the foster system and how she makes her life better. My husband and I loved teens when we were doing foster care. some of Nicolas Sparks is really good for teens because they are love stories but they don't have anything a teen shouldn't read in them. If you want something for personal empowerment the blood and bone series is amazing, as is legendary. A Great and Terrible Beauty is amazing as well. Tamara Perce's books are good. John Green is good as well. Louis Lowery was one of my favorites too. Sorry this was so sporadic but I was just writing the books as they came to me.

“The hatters”- Jesse andrews (about a kid in a band with social anxiety)
“Paper towns”- John green (a boy in love with a girl who’s trying to develop a sense of self in a world where she feels everyone is being fake)
“Mirror mirror”- cara delevingne (talks about struggling with gender identity)
For lighter and just happy popular books (divergent, Harry Potter, me and earl and the dying girl) I also recommend anything written by Marie Lu
I’m a foster mother in Ohio. I exclusively do teen girls and adopted a 17 year old last November.
I hit the Half Price Books store for a variety of books for my foster room.
Homecoming by Cynthia Voigt is about a parentified teen girl looking for a kinship placement for her and her siblings.
Good Night Mr.Tom is about an abused boy in London during WW2 and being sent to the country to escape the blitz.
Both of these are good for kids who want something they can relate to.
I also put the first Harry Potter book, A Wrinkle in Time,and Eragon in the room as well. These do all touch on missing parents in some way but are more fantasy focused. They work well for escaping into another world to forget your problems for a time.
Joan Bauer’s Rules of the Road is a coming of age novel about learning to drive, and to stand up for yourself.
I also make sure there is an empty clean journal with fun pens for writing if a kid finds comfort in journaling, an adult coloring book because it can be relaxing, and a teen Bible if they find that to be helpful. If I get a kid of another faith I would pick up books for that.

Love your videos!! Maybe you could just put a duvet cover over the comforter if it isn't gender neutral, etc. To reuse the comforters you already have and duvet covers are easier to store too!
Yeah, I tried that, but ended up returning the duvet because the comforter got all bunchey inside, no matter how well I tied it and tried to smooth it out.
I wish it would’ve worked better.
chicken soup for the soul and the left behind teen series were favorites for me when I was a teen, but also non christian based - I loved the dark tower series by stephen king (not to scary) and I had a friend in school who LOVED nora roberts (for the older girls). 2nd hand book stores will have a young adult section that you could get fillers for cheap

I read and loved ‘Touching Spirit Bear’. I read it when I was thirteen and still think about how good it was. I’m not sure if it was a book assigned to me or something I chose to read in my reading comprehension class.
Hi, I had a baby boy for the firt year of his life and he has been united with kin. All is well. But I can't do kids without daycare again and daycare is nearly impossible to find. So I am thinking of doing Respite and Emergency now. Seeing these teens worked well for you is really great and I am going to explore that more.
Yeah, there is such a need for older kids! Definitely check with your foster care licensing person and let them know what you’re thinking.
I would say Dork diaries! Their a super fun chapter book for teen girls
Oh! Any of the Madeleine L'Engle series - like A Wrinkle in Time. The Little House on the Prairie books. Anne of Green Gables chapter books are classics of course.

Okay so idk if you still want book recs, but im a teenage girl (mid teens), and im obsessed with reading, so I'll give some ideas for a few different genres.
Sci-fi series': The Medoran Chronicles (my long time fav, its part fantasy part sci fi, by Lynette Noni), Navigating the Stars (also has some elements of romance, Maria V. Snyder), Illuminae ( Its set out rather strangely, but its quite interesting, Amie Kaufman)
Fantasy: anything from Cassandra Clares Shadowhunter world, Most of Leigh Bardugos books, Keeper Of The Lost Cities (also good for tweens, Shannon Messenger), Talon, the Iron Fey and Blood Of Eden by Julie Kagawa
Apocalypse books: All Thats Left In The World by Erik J Brown
Murder Mysterys: Murder Most Unladylike (also good for tweens)
Others: Jekylls Mirror (current fav, its mildly screwed up and talks about vaguely paranormal cyberbullying, William Hussey), Intruder (Christine Bongers), Solitaire (idk the author but its the same as Heartstoppers), Heartstopper, the earlier books from the author of the vampire diaries (these are more for older teens, probably 16 plus? Theyre romance. Personally I was 14 when i read them, but they are aimed for older kids. Vampires n paranormal stuff)

Also, the last part of your comment has me concerned. If you ever feel unsafe, you can call child protective service hotline for your state. I hope it doesn’t need to come to that, but you need to be safe. Or just talk through stuff with a school counselor or social worker who may be able help with some family stuff without removal.

and with the part youre concerned about, I have been talking to my school counsellor. Its currently school holidays, and theyve decided from what id told (I still wasnt sure then about what was abuse, and ive learned a lot more is abuse now) they concluded i'd likely be safe over the holidays, but when i get back to school im speaking to the student protection officer. Ive started making a list of things that me, my friends, and other adults have concluded as abuse too. Honestly, I think i'd prefer removal, although theyve both been convincing me of horrors or foster care and things, which is why i have ended up starting to watch your channel, and another one on foster parenting, to see that foster parents are mostly not horrible and it isnt as scary as i might think.

Unknowns can be scary and every foster home will be different and if you don’t connect well with one, you can always ask the caseworker to move, so you will never be stuck. But hopefully you just get more awesome trusted adults in your life who will help you thrive as you become an adult.
Between craziness, I have a travel vido request! I recently read an article about a company called Life at Sea Cruises which is going to be doing 1, 2, and three year cruises around the world. Another company is even doing a cruise that will sale indefinitely. I thought of you and Peter immensely. It's a little more than your $50/day/person budget, but I would love to hear your thoughts on that and if you would be interested in doing something like that when you retire from fostering.
That would be a great way to see the world!! We did hear about the 3 year cruise and we’re intrigued! Who knows if we’ll do something like that 🤷♀️

Not so much mental health books but young adult/ teen girl books by Christian author Jenny B. Jones. They are not preachy and are so good, one is mystery themed. Katie Parker Production series: In Between, On the Loose, the Big Picture. And her other book series, A Charmed Life: So Not Happening, I'm So Sure, So Over My Head.

Books 📖 Harry Potter and the hunger games.
Judy Blume books would probably be good for pre-teens/early-teens. (Are You There God, It’s Me Margaret was my 11 yo ‘bible’ for puberty since my Mom didn’t really explain it…she tried, but I was way too embarrassed to talk about it so ran away from those talks, so not her fault, but that book explained everything! It’s been updated for more current times…it was a little behind the times when I read it.) Blubber was a good book about teasing and body shaming, and Deenie was an interesting book about scoliosis and the emphasis on looks for teen girls. She wrote classics! To Kill a Mockingbird is a great book, and often read in school. I’d recommend some John Grisham or other ‘thriller’ writers cause they may enjoy those. Maybe take them to the local library if they’re interested in reading and let them check some out, or especially if your library has a used book store in it, maybe let them go through and pick some out that would be their own to take with them? They’re usually $1 or so at ours. (I’m not really up to date on teen books for current times, but your local librarian can probably make a bunch of recommendations!) Libraries also usually have a lot of activities for all different age groups that are free or low cost…depends on the area, ours is very well funded. But, could be a great resource for foster parents to look into!
