Alzheimer's and not wanting to eat

  • I took care of my dad who had alzheimer's. Alzheimer's (and dementias) is by far one of the most difficult diseases to have to endure. Both for the person who is unfortunately afflicted but also for the loved one who cares for them. It is a world where the routine rules of what we know as reality do not apply. A world in which what once was is no longer, and a world in which ones behavior can change unpredictably at any given moment. A world where the navigation of the terrain is never a constant but always filled with ever changing new spontaneous variables to have to deal with. Sometimes just going with the flow of what happens in that given moment versus pushing what normally "would or should happen" can actually be quite magical. As many caregivers know sometimes it can become quite difficult to get loved ones with dementia to want to eat. On this day my father was very creative in finding a way to not eat. I will always be grateful that even within the difficult insanity of having to endure this horrible disease my father and I could still have moments of laughter as well.

Painting to Remember I am so incredibly sorry for your loss. I know he meant the world to you and your family. My grandfather passed away a year ago and your dad reminds me so much of him. He had dimensia, so it was really hard for him to remember things. I remember right before he died, he looked at me and said "I love you, Maddie." Your dad was a great man and puts a smile on my face each time I see one of his videos. There is not a day goes by when I don't think about my grandpa, I miss him so much but I know he is in a much better place. Who knows, maybe they are best buds in heaven, because I feel they would get along grand. RIP Norm💗

He can't walk and his alzheimer's is in a very advanced stage, so it's like he is not even aware of the world. He lives in his own world basically. I am not sure if you will see this...I am so sorry to hear of your dads passing. You are a wonderful daughter to your dad and hes watching over you I'm sure. Your videos help me through the hard times as I care for my dad. My dad just turned 70 and I've been taking care of him for 5 years now (since I was 28). I have given up so many things and sacrificed so much to be able to care for my dad but how can you not. It wasnt a decision as much as it was accepting that he now needed me.
I struggle and feel alone sometimes but your videos help me to stay positive and cherish the time we have.

He was the most important person in the world to me. Like your father, he was a brilliant man who had a very strong work ethic and cared deeply for my mom and the 3 of us. My father wanted to get rid of his food too. He told us frequently near the end of his life that he didn't eat lunch anymore. He also told us his weight and how old he was. I enjoy your videos and I bet your father was a great guy to know! I've only seen a couple of videos of him and I absolutely love him! I'm so sorry for your loss but you haven't really lost him, for he's apart of you, in your soul and in your life and in who you are as a person. I'm 20 and my parents are both getting older and I fear for them because of something horrible like this but I'd do just how you did and be by their side through it all no matter what and try to make everyday as great as possible, it's the least we can do. Cody Cothern Aww, thank you for the lovely message 💜.
Your parents are blessed to have you as their child as you obviously have a wonderful loving compassionate heart and soul!
One of my father's greatest pleasures throughout his entire life was helping others. When he first got diagnosed with Alzheimer's I asked him if it would be okay with him if I shared our story. He asked me why I would want to do so and I explained to him that I thought our story could help others who unfortunately are also forced to deal with this brutally difficult disease. His response was if I truly believed it would help even just one person then yes go ahead and share our story. Even though my dad passed away in February of 2016 I still feel very passionate about how devastating this disease is for those afflicted with it. I also feel very passionate about the plight of the millions of caregivers who are struggling on a daily basis to try to provide care for their loved ones with little to no help or support. I still continue to post our videos (I have a lot of footage left that I filmed of my dad) and advocate because I receive so many message daily from people telling me that our videos help them. My dad would be exctatic to know that he is still helping others!

I'm only 16, I'm trying not to cry while writing this... I already have like a waterfall coming out of my eyes... anyways... my dad, it's almost like he's never around, I get angry often, but I don't push myself because I know he's sacrificing for me, my family, including my grandmother who is in better conditions... when she never gives a shot how my dad's back is breaking, and she lives with he's other son who is younger than my dad... he doesnt work, has 4 kids... my grandmother is such a drama queen, she gives everything away to her other grandkids, when me (I'm one of her grandkids too, but...)... what about me? My 2 brothers? Does she think we get everything we want? My "cousins" are living like in heaven when we're in hell... they live like a family together forever, but my dad, is giving everything just thinking that this is his family, he even gave away our house to them (not the one were living in now) the one in my country...
As I said before that my grandmother is a drama queen... you won't believe this, my grandfather, who already passed away before me and my brothers were born, but I really wish he was here to make thing much clear, he married another woman, that was the best decision he could have made, coz he already had kids with my own grandmother (my father, uncle (the one with 4 kids) and another one,and other 3 daughters) so he didn't leave my grandmother as a single mother... but the reason was that she is so dramatic that she was really really lazy... so how come she feels sick now after resting whole life? When my dad is still working with broken back? My dad isn't the young men is saw when I was born, he's old too by now... and trust me, my grandmother got married as a teen... so she spent have that much difference from my dad... I really don't like her acting skills... she can't even act, sometimes I think I'm the only one who sees this in my family, but no... everyone ( by that I mean... all the neighbours)
I hope I can help my dad if he's in those conditions one day coz of my "fucking uncle" whose a cheater too... and my grandmother!!
Last thing is that... my decision will be that when I start working,in 10 - 6 years time... I don't really think I will help them like my dad did to my grandmother... don't get me wrong .I'm not saying my parents (because they did a lot for me my 2 brothers, compared to what my grandfather and grandmother did to my father! I do understand those were my dad's parents but they didn't show love. Love is all.
Id do that to my mom too, I always say that I won't help her as a joke, but she raised me so well and today I have great feeling for others.❤❤❤❤❤❤

It’s so cool to see such a good old guy like him. Cracked me up. It is sad but as you’ve stated, there’s such precious moments.
We live in Alaska. Out my back door is thousands of square miles of Alaskan Bush. I told my wife if I get Alzheimer’s I’ll just walk into the woods. She answered. “Oh you’d forget!” Lol
God Bless him and all who brighten his days.

I had a great-aunt that passed not too long ago who was starting to show signs of Alzheimers. she had to be checked on daily because she started to stop eating and taking her medications. It's so sad to see a family member like that.

I am so sorry for your loss. I bet your dad was a hoot. Although my mom didn't have dementia she was child like at the last year I took care of her for 20 years I miss her so much. My mother in law has dementia and she's in an assisted living she too much to handle she's a runner so its unsafe to have her at home she would wander off. Just got back from our visit she claims they don't feed her, they do. We however bring her a goody each visit. Been through it with my late father in law too.

Thank you for your messages. Unfortunately my dad passed away last year. He and I were lucky in that most of the time he was able to retain a sense of humor even while he became more demented from Alzheimer's. I appreciate your offer to help. I still feel very committed and passionate about advocating about the dire need for more awareness in the need to find treatments and a cure. Also about advocating on behalf of the millions of people world wide who are caring for their demented loved ones with little to no help and who are drowning while doing so. I am looking into some advocating projects that I may start and would certainly need help if I do. You can subscribe to my CZcams page, or better yet, like my facebook page facebook.com/PaintingToRemember/
as I will be posting information about the projects and how people can help as I go forward with them. Thank you again ♥

A few months ago I've found your channel. I have to be honest, I'm not a subscriber for God knows what reasons, but I come back to check every now and then how your father is doing. It's Probably because I did not get the chance to say a proper Goodbye to my grandpa or just because your father is just the sweetest, but I found myself really anxious every time I check on him if everything is ok. Just know that you are an amazing person and you are loved -even from a stranger like me on the other side of the ocean. Send you lots of love and thoughts from Italy.

Painting To Remember I'm so sorry for your loss. And please, do not think it's a cliché say something like this in this circumstances. I have a particular "relationship" with death. I don't miss my family, I mean the ones Who passed away, because I know that in some way I meant something to them, and viceversa, they really meant something to me. And that is something death cannot change. All the good and bad moment w/ your dad are still there, in your story. I'll leave you something for the moments you feel down. It's sort of philosophy in my family, it's a "prayer" from Saint Augustine. www.linkedin.com/pulse/st-augustine-poem-front-death-martin-g-laramée-m-a- I wish you all the good thing in life. Azzurra (it's my real name)

Thank you for your lovely messages!! They meant a lot. I am sorry you weren't able to have a propper goodbye with your grandfather...but I believe even though we may not have opportunities to voice things in person our souls and hearts can communicate and understand love and energy...he knew. Unfortunately my dad died the end of February 2016. I had recorded a lot of footage of our journey with Alzheimer's and I will still post videos going forward.
