Years ago I was in New Zealand on a trip, and the Leafs were playing the Bruins in the playoffs. Took my jersey with me and found another Ontarian wearing theirs wandering around Auckland. It was pretty cool to bond over something that was happening 10's of thousands of kilometres away.

With fewer goals last year - the Leafs finished higher in the regular season standings. So how does that possibly support that Matthews wins a Hart as league MVP this year just for scoring 70 goals?

Because goals is the hardest thing to do consistently in the NHL. Its not "just 70 goals". Its 70 goals while being one of the league's very best forwards defensively and literally carrying his team. He leads all forwards in +/-. He scored 68 on a team that is amongst the worst in the league for Power play opportunities. He has 51 even strength goals. Only 10 players in history have done that before. He probably won't win but you have to name him as a nominee just to recognise the achievement. Even at his current tally of 68, you have to nominate him.
@@redherring4119 He is a great goal scorer like Selanne and Hull. That is awesome. He will get the Trophy for his great goal scoring.
But Gretzky, Mario and McDavid have both goal and assists records consistently in the top 25 NHL levels. Auston doesn’t.
Matthews weakness is his assist records are between 33% & 50% of the current top 25 NHL players. That is a serious weakness and why Zack couldn’t score 40 goals with the Leafs. Leaf Fans are avoiding assessing why the $50 Million Leaf Core 4 (the common denominator in all these Leaf Core 4 playoff disappointments) have zero playoff runs because they are missing attributes they were/are paid for. There were paid to win in the playoffs - but didn’t.
@@JDI85 That is why Auston gets the trophy for goals. Weaknesses in Matthews passing skills - are why Zack scored 40 in Edmonton and why the Leafs have zero playoff runs.
@@jimlangdon1947there’s no weakness in his passing, he looks to shoot every time he crosses the blue line because he can score from everywhere, does mcdavid have a bad shot because Matthew’s has 40 more goals then him? Mcdavid doesn’t score from distance hence why he looks to pass 👍🏻

Empty net points are calculated exactly the same as PP and 5v5 etc. They all count, you have to earn your time on the ice in those situations.
No you don’t, kucherov is the worst defensive player in the league they put him out there with empty net to get points, he ain’t protecting leads when the playoffs start
