  • This video is the ULITMATE guide to turbocharging any car on a budget. This video focuses on my turbo MX5 Miata, turbo'd for just over $1,000, but the process is the same for any car. Want to turbo your car but keep it reliable? Don't want to spend much money? Want to be like Broke & Boosted but have control over fueling and timing? This video will show you how to do exactly that! This video is the ULTIMATE Guide to turboing a car with the goal of reliability in mind. Here's the timestamps for what's covered in this video:

    At the end of the day a turbo setup is just nuts and bolts and a bit of learning, and this shows you what you'll need to do to turbo any car, from a turbo Honda Civic to a turbo Mazda Miata and more! This process makes use of inexpensive but high quality parts, including a budget standalone ECU. In 2020 and beyond there's no reason to NOT use a budget standalone ECU. It'll require some time as it's very DIY oriented, meaning you'll be turboing the car yourself, installing and making parts yourself, and tuning yourself. With this process, you can achieve great performance and reliability for your money. Cheap parts aren't bad parts, bad cheap parts are. Have fun with the new turbo on your car, and leave me any questions you have below!

    • @CashedOutCars
      @CashedOutCars  Před 3 lety

      I’m not sure what’d be different! It’d assume the process shouldn’t be too different. I believe autos came with a slightly different cam setup so your tune may end up a bit different but you’d have to work on that once you get the kit anyway. Good luck!

    THANK YOU BRO!!!!! you a real one! one day ima get a NA and i wanted to make it fun for my first car. later down the line ima get a sti but it looks way too complicated for me to start on so i thought i would get a miata. i know some things about how some parts of the engine works and what their for so basically im a beginner. i know some names of parts like radiator, down pipe, intake, etc but i dont know how exactly they work. ive watched so many videos on engines and how to build them but they probably only told me like 20% of the information i need to know to just build it, and not explain what they do. one day ima probably go to college for me to become a mechanic but damn this video pretty much showed me basically 100% of what needs to be done and 50% of how the parts work. i was so excited when you said you have more videos of the whole process and explaining it in more detail because these other youtubers hardly do it. Thank you sir!!! I liked and subbed because of this and i will NOT be unsubscribing at all!!!

    I have a few notes I'd like to add if someone is interested? I recommend as much OEM used as you can find- turbos as well. If you find one at the right size an OEM and a rebuild kit will work fine.
    I would say the same for intercooler. If you have to do custom anyways, get a good OEM unit if you can find one.
    Also, do research on water to air. It's much easier to route some coolant hose to a heat exchanger than it is 2" pipe. Some cars that have cheap H/E are cobras Mercedes products etc. Prius water pumps are adequate for moving the coolant. Great video thanks!

    • @CashedOutCars
      @CashedOutCars  Před 3 lety +1

      I agree with trying to go OEM when possible, it'll often be cheaper and easier. With Miatas, MazdaSpeed setups require modification to get them to work on 1.8s and don't fit 1.6Ls. I did want to source an OEM Saab or Volvo turbo, but i couldn't find one since the small, T3 flange ones are getting tough to find. Air to water inter coolers certainly can be a good choice for a lot of setups. Thanks for stopping by!

    Great video, overall a through explanation of how to low budget boost a Miata.
    I would like to add that BOV’s are crucial to keeping lower priced eBay turbos alive, even just starting out with a cheap eBay HKS knockoff. It may save the novice builder some instant headaches because contrary to popular belief, “tuning out” compressor surge doesn’t elevate the mechanical load the turbo is seeing. That’s probably one of the biggest reasons eBay turbos fail, the parts aren’t big money for a reason. Though, I have with messed first hand some pretty decent abuse on my Maxpeedingrods turbo. And she’s still good boost right meow.

  • @mlfishing842
    @mlfishing842 Před 3 lety

    Hey I know this is a stupid and amateurish question but I'm learning as I go. I am building up a miata slowly and when I finally put my TD04 Turbo on I am wanting to run wastegate pressure (7psi) for a little while before installing a boost controller and taking it to a dyno to get proper tuned, if I were to just run wastegate pressure I assume that the only "boost tuning" I would be doing would be watching/tweaking my AFRs to make sure they are good when I'm slowly coming into boost. Is this right? The only way to tune wastegate pressure with no boost controller etc is with AFR table? Aslong as I have a good base map with base timing and good AFRs aswell? I know spark maps also contribute but this is something I do not want to touch until I install a boost controller and take it to a dyno with a proper tuner. Can I have a safe wastegate pressure map without having to touch my spark map at all?

    • @CashedOutCars
      @CashedOutCars  Před 3 lety

      No questions are stupid questions when you're trying to learn! Spring pressure should be the pressure at which the wastegate starts to open up. Running spring pressure means you'll have limited control over building boost faster (holding the wastegate completely shut) if you're trying to build more boost than spring pressure, in your case 7 psi. You'll be limited by the characterstics of the actuator. You'll need to tune your fueling table to run proper afrs (14 down to 13 or just under in boost) and be sure to run conservative enough timing to not knock. You'll need to try a base tune and may want to dial back timing to stay safe. If the map is well known and conservative you may not have to touch it. Good luck!

    • @CashedOutCars
      @CashedOutCars  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks man! Absolutely. If I had advanced my ignition timing I would have been able to make a fair bit more power even at 10psi. Now I'm running it at 14 and it's quick! I haven't gotten a power figure at this boost level yet though. If you get a FM kit you'll really be saving yourself time, not ending up with a kit with a lot more potential than something like this. Good luck with your build!

    • @CashedOutCars
      @CashedOutCars  Před 2 lety

      So far so good on the turbo’s reliability! It spools slower than I’d like, especially being a 1.6. Full boost (14 PSI now) from a lower RPM pull is around 3800 RPM. I do have electronic boost control set up. With a 1.8 you can easily get a cheaper, T2 flange manifold which should be better suited for quick spool

      No, stock fuel pressure with 420cc injectors, almost twice what a stock 1.6 is, now at 14psi. If you use a rising rate pressure regulator with a standalone ECU you’re going to have a bad time tuning it. Those regulators are really for people who don’t want to run a proper ECU
