  • Snowboarding tips and technique. In this video I give you an exercise called 'Garlands'. This will help improve your edge changes when snowboarding. By achieving an early edge change on your snowboard you can achieve more grip and control throughout your turns. The turn is the most important part of snowboarding, and by perfecting your turns you will become a better rider!

      I'm on +18 on the front and -12 at the back. This is pretty much what I ride all the time. I don't like switching about too much with my gear and I feel this is a good compromise that let's me ride everything. I dont actually know what stance width I have I just go with what feels right, but on a cambered board I sometimes go a little narrower, whereas in a rockered board I prefer to be a tiny bit wider to help spread my weight and translate that to edge grip across the entire edge of the board. Only when racing boardercross did I have more of a different stance, +21 and 0 on the back!

I am very grateful for your videos because I learnt to snowboard when I was in my teens and did not appreciate that there were so many techniques to learn to improve riding. I've been really enjoying these videos. Do you think a stiffer boot helps make for an easier transition? I've been using the same pair of Ride boots for a few years and they're certainly comfortable, but they're a bit on the softer side and quicker turns has always always always been a huge weakness of mine. Thanks :)

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  Před 3 lety +4

      I'm not a huge fan of really stiff boots, mine are a few years old and in that nice comfortable stage too! However it does mean that it takes a little more work, a little more movement, to make the edge change. Therefore they will be a little slower...
      Basically it is when you transition onto your toe edge, if your boots are soft, your shins will have to push further into them to get the same response of using a stiffer boot. If you're flexible and able to do this you get used to it and its not really a problem though. Then coming back onto your heels if you've had to come further forward onto your toes then you have to travel further back to then hit your highbacks. Once you are there though, your highbacks dont soften up, ap that should feel fine!
      In conclusion, you can make it work with softer boots, and I find super stiff boots too aggressive most of the time, but if you're literally riding a pair of slippers, might be worth investing in a new pair! I ride burton imperial boots btw

      Malcolm is a great teacher but he is teaching carving turns. There's nothing wrong with the surf style turn which is the skid that you're talkin about. You can make disciplined skid turns doing the same thing he's doing. Notice how he keeps his upper-body quiet, very important. Lead with your upper body. Your body has to go first. Think about it like weaving on a bicycle back and forth. Your body is always out front. Don't flail your arms, lead with them.

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  Před 3 lety +3

      Exactly, when you start it on steeper runs don't put too much pressure through your edge to begin with, just allow the board to skid a bit more. Then as you get use to the movement try increasing your edge angle by leaning into the turn a little more. With practice you'll be able to ride as smoothly on steep runs as you do on greens! However when its icy, your board just isn't going to grip on ice if it's too steep, so in that scenario just relax your ankles and let the board skid over the ice 👍

      @malcolmmoore  Před 4 lety +4

      You can practice before to be sure. Down unweighted turns take a while to master. Technically to do this exercise most effectively you will be making retraction turns, which are very similar to down unweighted turns. You are keeping your centre of mass moving in a straight line whilst your legs work in front and behind you, retracting underneath your body. However you can still do this exercise with up unweighted turns, albeit a bit slower.

    Hey Malcolm! I just watched your recent video: THE VERY SIMPLE THEORY OF GOOD SNOWBOARDING. Where the topic was that rater crossing your center of mass with the leg/board movement in edge change, you cross your center of mass from the upper body. Is this two thing contradicts each other or can you explain it further? Thanks!

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  Před 4 měsíci

      Nah I don't think it contradicts, I can't remember this exactly but I think it's about using my knees to work my weight over the board, however if it's about retraction turns then that is slightly different

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  Před 3 lety +1

      You might be coming into the edge change with a little too much weight on the back foot therefore it slides out, or you could be over rotating your upper body on the way in to the turn so then the lower body catches up and tries to follow round and skids out, or it could be something different, but its difficult to tell for sure without seeing you ride!

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  Před 4 lety +2

      For the exercise think more about using your knees and ankles to change edge and your hips will naturally cross over too. In reality it's a little bit of both. For a turn you can commit more with your hips as that's what will pull your centre of mass inside of the turn. But if you're just practicing the edge change back and forth try and stay low to keep your hips pretty still with your legs working underneath you!

    What’s the difference between this and your short radius turns ? (Opening and shutting the door )

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  Před 4 lety +3

      There are alot of similarities and this exercise can be used to create short turns. However this exercise doesn't just need to be used for short turns. An early edge change is useful for big carved turns too. This edge change would help when riding powder, it's the same movements but it would feel quite different underfoot as you wouldn't actually be on your edge, rather the base of the board would be creating a platform against the soft snow. The purpose of this exercise is really just to help with the edge change specifically rather than the completion of a whole turn. But you will find there are a whole bunch of simlarites between the way you need to ride for different snow conditions or to create various turn shapes and sizes. However that is why snowboarding is so cool, because once you have a solid grasp of the basic fundamentals it is easy to translate your skills to work across the whole mountain. Hence why you may have heard people say that snowboarding is difficult to learn, then easy to master!

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  Před 4 lety

      @@devonreid1646 if you're going slow you might just stand tall over your board and moves your hips across from toes to heel position and vice versa, but if you're going fast this would be a quicker way to change edge yes. Anytime you want to change edge as quick as possible this is your go to. The main problem people tend to have on flat slopes and cat tracks is that they aren't used to just rocking from edge to edge without completing the turn. You can change edge many times and barely turn the board. If you are struggling on flat slopes it's probably not so much to do with your edge change being slow, rather once you are on an edge the back end of the board is skidding out and not gripping.

      @@Hkmughalgaming always initiate with the front foot but as soon as the rear foot follows begin applying pressure. If you apply more pressure through your rear foot you can steer from the back end of the board. This can be handy in slushy or powder conditions. For riding the piste you can still apply more pressure through the back foot but your feet stay slightly more 50/50 with the weight distribution front to back.
